Morning Free Association 4/25/16

Guten Morgen! Wie geht’s? Ich bin sehr müde.

Okay, enough German 101.

It seemed like all the series ended this weekend, well except for the Red Wings who were sent packing on Thursday night. The Kings fell, then King Henrik collapsed with his Rangers, along with the Flyers, Wild, and Panthers on Sunday Triple Header Elimination Bout. Only two series remain and both of those have games tonight: Game 7 between Blackhawks and Blues (8:30pm on NBCSN) and Game 6 between the Ducks and Predators (8pm on CNBC).

Anyway, in the AHL, the Providence Bruins lost their first-round matchup as well. I will have more on that series tomorrow as it requires a little more examination, or at least, more time to process.

Two questions for you:

How’s your bracket looking?

What’s on tap?

Articles claiming we should trade Tuukka make my head hurt:

That article is so much garbage. Let’s just stop playing premium players premium contracts because other teams have done that and it worked once or twice

A quick look at General Fanager for the cap hits of goaltending for the 10 remaining teams in the playoffs blows gaping holes in the guy’s argument.

WAS: 6.10 (Holtby), .750 (Grubauer)
TBL: 5.95 (Bishop), .925 (Vasilevskiy)
SAN: 3.00 (Jones), 2.30 (Reimer)
PIT: 5.75 (Fleury), .620 (Murray)
NYI: 4.50 (Halak), 1.50 (Greiss)
DAL: 5.90 (Lehtonen), 4.50 (Niemi) <—– !!!!!!!!!
STL: 2.50 (Elliott), 2.35 (Allen)
CHI: 6.00 (Crawford), .587 (Darling)
NAS: 7.00 (Rinne), .725 (Hutton)
ANA: 1.15 (Anderson), .722 (Gibson), 2.25 (Khudobin)

I kinda agree though

I do and I don’t. If you can Trade Rask to a team that helps improve your defense significantly then you can get away with one of those middle of the pack type articles. An idea I’ve seen tossed around is to Carolina for Eddie Lack & defense. Meh I can handle that

Or we could do what we did in 2011. Amazing D and amazing G.

Timmy had a cap hit of 5mil that year with a lower salary cap.

After this season, I don’t think Rask is the one anymore. That’s the part I kinda agree with

carvinbass18
Editor
carvinbass18

I hear ya. I developed some questions about Rask too during the season. I just don’t see a deal happening that gets the Bruins the kind of goaltender that even with adding at defense can get you further. I’m open to the idea though.

Satan81

Satan81

I hear ya. I’m not sure I agree, but I hear ya.

To crib notes from the “Fire Julien?” discussion, if you traded Tuukka, who would play net? Taking chances on young and/or cheap goaltending usually results in “Team hasn’t solved goaltending woes”.

And if your defense sucks, you fuckin’ better have a good goalie.

McIntyre and Subban are probably in the oven for at least one more year of baking before they’re ready.

carvinbass18

carvinbass18

didn’t he miss a bunch of time in the beginning of the season too?

IntentionallyWidenberg

Yup. McIntyre is at sub .900 in the AHL. I’d be stunned if he were ready for NHL duty with less than 2 more full years in the minors.

DrHandgrenaid

I suspect Subban is backup next year simply through being waiver eligible as a 4th year pro. I sure hope hes ready *tugs collar nervously*

Miss Muse

I think the idea Geoff is having is that we’d trade Tuukka to get Lack (and someone else) thereby saying we are most definitely in rebuild mode. Lack is OK, but he’s obviously not amazing. He is Swedish though, so there is that. wink

DrHandgrenaid

DrHandgrenaid

Exactly, trading Tuukka is announcing that we’re burning it down. Full stop, unless is was somehow for Hellebuyck or Gibson

I feel like that was the defense’s fault, though? Like, how can you look at this season and point to Rask? After the first few weeks, he was really good.

DrHandgrenaid
Editor
DrHandgrenaid

Exactly. And at the end, he wasn’t bad either. Just not good enough to overcome that defense, which you CAN’T blame him for.

phonymahoney
Guest
phonymahoney

Does he have his shortcomings? Sure. Could any goalie overcome this defense? Probably not.

DrHandgrenaid

DrHandgrenaid

I doubt either Hank or Price (the only goalies in the league who are probably better than Tuukka) could have.

Well. Maybe Hank. The Rag’s D is pretty terrible

phonymahoney

Exactly.

Satan81

But if you buy that guy’s logic, then no team would want an expensive goalie, so you wouldn’t get value for him in a trade.

carvinbass18
Editor
carvinbass18

Right, so you’d just be selling off an “elite” goalie for nothing. Aka doing what you did w/ boychuk & hamilton (I know they’re not “elite” but you get my point)

DrHandgrenaid
Editor
DrHandgrenaid

Also, the logic in that article completely ignores the details in every single one of his examples for cheap goalies getting it done

IntentionallyWidenberg
Admin
IntentionallyWidenberg

I’ve heard this dumbass argument far too many times.

Your goalie doesn’t need to be inherently elite, he just needs to play that way when it counts

Q: And how does one reduce the risk of your goalie not “playing that way when it counts”?
A: by hiring a goaltender who has proven he plays at an elite level often

Q: And how does one hire that goaltender?
A: By paying market wages for elite goaltenders.

The fact that he calls out Antti Niemi – who nearly singlehandedly got the Stars eliminated this week – as a positive example, tells me he is not worth listening to.

To win a Cup a team needs a hot goalie. Tuuka is still capable of being that guy. You don’t trade that guy.

There haven’t been many Trent Dilfers in the NHL.

Nobody is trading top pairing defense for him. It is not happening.

It’s going to be a long summer if we’re getting this in April!

This might be the most Reilly Smith passage ever:

After producing an NHL-leading 8 points (4G/4A) in the first three games of the series, Reilly Smith couldn’t add to it over the final three tilts.
