Morning Free Association 4/26/16

Good morning.

Rise and shine, we have work to do! Or, work to attend, at least?

Khgjhgf

There were two playoff games last night, and I’m happy to report that one of them resulted in an elimination: the elimination of he Chicago Blackhawks, to be precise.

The other game was won by Anaheim, and the Anaheim-Nashville series will be going to game seven. It sure would be nice if the Western Conference could get these series settled a little more decisively. I can’t handle all this waiting.

Greg Wyshynski’s five reasons the Blackhawks were bounced in the first round:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/five-reasons-blackhawks-were-bounced-in-first-round-by-blues-065255320.html

Meanwhile, follow the bouncing puck: Bowman traded Patrick Sharp to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Trevor Daley, who didn’t fit at all and who requested a trade, so he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for cap relief and Rob Scuderi, who didn’t fit at all, so he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings for Christian Ehrhoff, who was scratched for the playoffs.

The hell?

DrHandgrenaid

Meanwhile, not quite a year after their respective trades, the net results are as follows:
Saad+Paliotta+some other prospect for Anisimov, a month and a half of Ladd, and Richard Panik
Sharp+Johns for fuck all

Even worse, the other part of the trade was Ryan Garbutt, who Chicago then swapped for Jiri Sekac who was then waived.

I know trading Sharp was a salary dump but still brutal to get SO little out of it.

It’s still fucking snowing.

I had the snow tires taken off the car last week and wondered if it was” too early”. Late April, still too early to change the tires? Ugh.

It’s not snowing here but it is significantly colder and raining. Julio and I got our walk in this morning and back to the car just before the first raindrops fell.

carvinbass18

I ran to the store to get lunch. We have three frigging inches of snow

Miss Muse

Also, it was the PREDS who won. The PREDS forced a Game 7.

DrHandgrenaid

Not entirely sure it matters. Both team’s Douchebag/60 is through the roof

DrHandgrenaid

so… on that note… Which is worse on the dickbaggery scale: Ribiero+Neal or Perry+ Kesler.

Those four players damn near make this a textbook #TeamMeteor situation

The BOB

To me it’s the latter duo by a landslide

carvinbass18

We disagree quite drastically on that one lol

I still loathe RIbiero for the ’04 series…
I also haven’t witnessed as much dirty play from Kesler/Perry since I don’t watch much non-Bruins hockey.

the german hammer

Neal’s been behaving himself for the most part. Ribeiro is just a lousy excuse for a human being. Kesler is hard to like and Perry needs to be beaten to death. So, mix and match. I choose to focus on the parts pf the team that I do like.

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

Still can’t forgive Neal for that post-whistle knee to Marchand’s head that coincided with the Thornton-Orpik incident.

Holy fuck that game was a goddamn greasy horror show- Loui concussion 2.0, Kelly broken leg 2.0, KNEEal, and Thornton jumping Orpik.

the german hammer

I get it.

Satan 81's Sister

Ugh, that game.

carvinbass18

Neal the Penguin was way worse than Neal the Predator for sure. Ugh I just hate that guy so much.

The Once and Future Bagel Bruin

I have to ask because I really don’t know the answer. Why does everyone hate Perry?

the german hammer
Admin

Because he is their version of Marchand, but worse. He dives, he cheap shots, he does something to other players that make them want to kill him. For the first 3 games of this series, every scrum that erupted had Perry at it’s center.

A standard ‘1 and 29’ guy where his team LOVES him and everyone else loathes him. He is just probably the most skilled of his class.

DrHandgrenaid

He tends to be a dirty player, and is a textbook agitator. Hes like Marchand but instead of being charismatic, hes a black hole of personality. Also very divey

Therein lies my problem with the Blues… just can’t convince myself to pull for Steve Ott…

carvinbass18

Steve Ott missed a bunch of time during the regular season & even in game 7 played <10 minutes. He's a non factor

The BOB

The BOB

He’s still on the roster and Blues success is Ott success. No good. (Though I am sure I could find plenty of equally scummy players on each roster)

carvinbass18

For me, there are too many other people on the Blues that I want to see succeed compared to Nashville or Anaheim

The Once and Future Bagel Bruin

But Nashville is an awesome city and I like their jerseys.

Miss Muse

I’m meh-fully going for the underdog here.

carvinbass18

Yeah I’m rooting for the Preds mostly because I think their jersey is better than the Ducks

Haha. My rooting interests are often based on jersey.

Whereabouts are you in DE?

Staying in Stuttgart til tomorrow, then off to Kaiserslautern, then staying in Frankfurt Friday night.

My mind just refuses to process German, keeps trying to translate everything to French instead.

the german hammer

I usually translate French to Spanish in my head then try to speak and it comes out German.

The BOB

The BOB

Nice. I totally understand that. Whenever someone talks German to me my immediate attempt to respond is inevitably in French. Or I will try to frame my question in French before realizing it is pointless.

Thankfully most people speak some English since I am completely and utterly lost with German.

the german hammer
Admin

It depends upon the region. In Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), almost no English is spoken at all. I probably spoke more German there, which was the shame because it was the beginning of our trip and I had to warm up quickly. In Berlin, almost everyone speaks English and will want to practice their English on you. I was thinking more in German there and was able to give directions at one point. Anyone who knows me knows that I should never give directions to get somewhere, but, these ended up being, “Da rechts!”, and pointing. I just knew where the Europa Center was.

Nice. The locations I am going to have a pretty decent American presence so hasn’t been too big a deal, and I really don’t need TOO much help beyond coffee orders and ‘to-go’

I forget… isn’t one of the people on here living in Germany? I remember discussing but don’t recall with whom.

Fire away! And if you can make it to Mannheim or Heidelberg, let me know! If you’re in Frankfurt over the weekend, I could pop up and say hi and get beers.

Here are the two random questions…

1 – Mother wants some Reblochon (a French cheese)… have you ever even heard of it? I’m doubting I’ll be able to find it but is there a high-endish supermarket over here similar to a Whole Foods back in the US?

2 – Toy cuckoo clock (or one suitable for a 3yo)? Even a cuckoo clock ornament or something would do. When my insane child learned I was going to Germany he asked for a cuckoo clock. The kid is 3. How does he even know they exist, never mind that they come from this region of Germany?!

Satan81
Admin

What you’d probably want is a straight-up cheese shop. Searching for “cheese shop Stuttgart” on Yelp, looks like there are a handful of good ones.

You might also look for a “Bio” (“organic”) shop, but I’m not familiar with the major chains.

As for cuckoo clocks…Stuttgart is your best bet if you’re looking for an authentic Black Forest cuckoo clock. “Kuckucksuhr” is “cuckoo clock” in German. Apart from specialty shops, you could try Galeria Kaufhof, a major department store chain.

The Galeria Kaufhof in Alexanderplatz was

Satan81

But this Galeria Kaufhof should be right across from the Hauptbahnhof in Stuttgart and looks like one of their larger ones:

Alexanderplatz is in Berlin.

The BOB

Gotcha. Thought I had seen that name for some reason… must have been a different platz!

the german hammer

The Galeria in Alexanderplatz is notable because it’s in what used to be behind the wall.

Sadly, I’ve never been to Baden-Württemberg, although my family came from the Stuttgart area when it was still part of the Holy Roman Empire.

The BOB

The BOB

So that’s what the ‘Bio’ means… I kinda figured but wasn’t definite.

Thanks for the insight, I’ll have to try and find the Galeria place.

One last Q… can you recommend a good local wine? I understand this is the Riesling area but wouldn’t have the first clue which to go with. (I’m a beer guy)

Satan81
Admin

I cannot. I do not like the wine here. smile A Riesling is probably your best bet if you want a white wine. If you want a red, the “best” kind local to me would be a Dornfelder. Maybe a local shop has a Blaufrankisch, which can be good.

Best bet is to find a wine shop that has a sign on it like “Unsere Region” (“our region”), ask for a recommendation, and cross your fingers. Maybe they’ll let you taste stuff first.

The BOB

The BOB

Haha, I wouldn’t know what I was tasting! The wife and I have drastically different tastes in that respect.

Thank you for the assistance, it is greatly appreciated!

Drove through Mannheim yesterday on my way down from Frankfurt and even considered stopping for coffee but didn’t since I’d be clueless where to go and hadn’t yet gotten any Euros out.

Thanks for the offer for Frankfurt but I’m flying out midday Saturday so will barely even see the city.

Satan81

Gotcha. But hey, if you think you might be free Friday night, let me know and I’ll hop on a train.

As I was watching this, I’m thinking “This is just going to make it hurt twice as bad for Blues fans when the Hawks get a power play with 80 seconds left and score off the faceoff”

My walk in closet is so big at the new place that I am selling both my dressers. I wonder if I could chop off the bottom of one of the dressers and have a coffee table.
