Morning Free Association 4/29/16 – Why am I not up yet?

Why am I not up yet?

It’s happening!
Ovi vs Crosby in the playoffs!
And Crosby didn’t make a very big impression last night.

Oh well.

And to no one’s surprise, Patrice Bergeron is selected as a finalist for the 2015/16 Patrice Bergeron award.

Perfect job, Bergy.

What is up, peeps?

#NHLDucks have relieved Head Coach Bruce Boudreau of his duties, Executive Vice President/GM Bob Murray announced. pic.twitter.com/aFAH2XhR9x

— Anaheim Ducks (@AnaheimDucks) April 29, 2016

So…. he’s working for the Sens by noon Monday, right?

DrHandgrenaid

Related: If he ends up in Ottawa, this division will have Babcock, Julien, Boudreau, Bylsma, and Cooper coaching.

Thats a nasty hill to climb if you’re Gerard Gallant or Michel Therrien

I’m blaming Boudreau for busting my bracket! May he wind up in the hell that is Calgary!!!!

I’m guessing he has a job by the end of today.

DrHandgrenaid

I’m only guessing that long because Friday afternoon and the weekend. Plus you have to assume he hears form Minnesota (Torchetti was only interim, so they don’t have a head coach for next season right now) and maybe some other teams with poor coaches whom haven’t fired them (VAN, COL, CGY, and MON all would be embarrassing themselves if they didn’t at least give him a call)

What are you talking about Montreal’s already all set.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh that still makes me laugh.

More #nhl expansion draft info. sources indicate no-moves must be protected by teams. no-trade clauses not exempt and can be left exposed.

— gary lawless (@garylawless) April 29, 2016

Well, guess there is no debate about whether the Bruins protect Z and Krejci or not then (only other NMC’s are Bergy and Tuukka, and duh) (also means that if they don’t buy out Seids, he CAN be exposed in expansion)

The Once and Future Bagel Bruin

Makes sense to me

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

Its no disaster, to be sure. Chara is arguably the only one squandering a protection slot, and even then…

Now, what they do with goalies will be interesting- Malcolm will be eligible for exposure, and one assumes hes backup next season, and will have a track record. Even if he is in PVD next year, I’m not sure I see how he doesn’t get snagged by an expansion team as their backup or 3rd goalie (if we get both QC and LV, there is no scenario he clears, with probably 6 goalies getting drafted)

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

Missed it, but Tuukka drops to an NTC after next season and could, in theory, be exposed. But even if they were okay with parting with Tuukka, there is zero scenario they’d risk losing him to expansion

McKenzie: "You can take this to the bank – at least one of the 14 teams in the lottery, and perhaps more, have Laine ahead of Matthews."

— Chris Nichols (@NicholsOnHockey) April 29, 2016

One wonders who.

(Who am I kidding, its almost certainly us, isn’t it?)

Also, apparently the NHL and NHLPA have come to an agreement w/r to how an expansion draft would work, including how NMC’s will be treated. No word on how they will be, just that they’d agreed.

If the Bruins got #1 overall and took Laine I’d be totally okay with that.

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

Supposed to be a very complete player- a Hossa/ Loui type winger

Satan81
Admin

Huh. Hossa and Loui are damn good, but they’re not “franchise talent” good. If Laine is being considered to be kinda maybe possibly worth taking over Matthews, then this draft isn’t sounding all that hot. I’d still be thrilled if we got stupid lucky and won one of the top 3 picks, but this seems like a weaker year.

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

I should add to that- what I mean is a very highly skilled 3-zone, defensively sound winger. Those two are the best comparisons available right now. Keep in mind, as an 18 year old, Laine just because the the playoff MVP in the Liiga, which is fucking insane.

Best I can gather about this draft- no generational talents per se, but its not out of the question that had they been available last year, Matthews, Laine, and Pulujarvi could have given Eichel a run for his money at #2. Then there is a break in talent, with the next tier being Tkachuk, DuBois, and Nylander, all excellent top-line type forwards. Then things are cloudier- with a few groups that can easy be shuffled based on position- the top defensemen (Juolevi, Sergachev, Chychrun, Bean, McAvoy, Fabbro) and the third tier forwards (Keller, Brown, Jost, McLeod, Bellows) will likely shuffle based on team preference. Its not last year’s draft, and after those names the dropoff is STEEP, but the top 17 or so is as good as any other non-insane year.

I’m not opposed to such a thing.

    Morning, jerks!

    BULLET POINTS:

  • Lost three hours of productivity with that whole hospital thing yesterday. It’s end of month, so I’m going probably just pop in now, and that’s it.
  • Since I only slept for like 2,5 hours yesterday, I was super tired leaving the office last night. I stopped short when a light turned yellow because I am a doofus (I always run yellows, what was my problem?!), and I heard a screech. Nobody hit me, but when I looked in the rear view mirror, it was Cauliflower who almost rear ended me. I felt guilty and then called him a few minutes later – he picked up the phone with, “Yup, that was me. I didn’t know it was you til I looked up after almost hitting you.” I thought it was my fauly, but he maintains his eyes were not on the road. OK with me, I guess? Oddly, his father, the prez, cut off my workhusband the other day. Workhusband yelled and flipped him the bird and then realized who it was. He was horrified. The big guy probably had no idea who the hell he was looking at anyway. I’ve been here seven years and my name is still “bunnyhunch”.
  • I took a ‘nap’ when I got home and planned for an hour. Went to bed at 7:15. Woke up at 4. Oops.
  • Still super excited about hockey – I need to buy skates this weekend – but also super anxious about playing again. Been too many years.
  • SO MUCH TO DO SO MAYBE I SHOULD STOP TALKING AHHHH

    Morning!

    -Friday! Yay!
-Lots of painting tomorrow. At least we’ll have company helping us and not alone.
-Partially tearing down a wall on Monday. Shit’s happening, yo.
-Sox lost the only game I was able to watch (not listen) to this week. Thanks for nothing, jerks.
-Got a resume out last night and have about 3 more companies I’m going to hound.
-I keep seeing the hockey posts and think “I really want to catch a game or two”. Hasn’t really happened, yet, though.

Coffee on tap. Hoping to make that beer tonight.

    Good Morning All!

Yes, it’s a great day. I got the mower going yesterday (couldn’t shut it off, but what the hey?) and mowed all 7 acres.

That would make today a day of rest (or play).

We didn’t playoff last night (B2B after dark!), but had some needed us time after two late nights of late hockey.

Jo is making brekkie this morn, so I’m just fucking off to start my fuck off day (i’ll start fucking off later, i’m too busy fucking off right now).

FRIDAY!!! Which is sorta like Saturday except Jo is working.

Coffee is on tap…. yes, it’s in there.

One camp I ran a few years ago had some problems with the diesel generator- the fuel pump was baffed, so we had to set it up with a gravity feed (put the fuel drum on it’s side on top of another fuel drum). Because it was a gravity feed and a diesel, the only way to shut it off at night was to crimp the fuel line with a pair of vice grips. Between that and burning 10 year old home heating oil in it instead of automotive diesel, that generator did not survive the field season, of course.

    DrHandgrenaid

    This camp was outstandingly slapdash.

We didn’t have a big enough fridge to keep a full week’s food cold, so we raided a 40-year old abandoned exploration camp across the lake for an old fridge, which we laid on its back and would fill with snow we got from the mountains with the helicopter to use like the crappiest chest freezer ever. We didn’t have a proper incinerator, so we raided the same for an old fuel drum, some stove pipe, and a few different screen material to build one (our camp builder/maintanace guy came to refer to the old camp as the hardware store).

When the helicopter’s transmission chipped on our demobe day we had a bunch of jet fuel coming in on our front-haul float plane flights to cache for the next seasons, but we couldn’t fly the chopper to sling it up the hill and away from the lake, so we set up rails with old drill rods to roll the 500 lb drums uphill.

Goddamn that camp was a good time.
