Morning Free Association – 5/4/2016 Stuff That Happened

Stuff that happened yesterday:

Three Boston Bruins will play in the IIHF Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship in Russia.

Frank Vatrano was added to Team USA’s roster on Tuesday afternoon, joining Brad Marchand (Canada), and David Pastrnak (Czech Republic) as the Bruins’ representatives at the tournament, which begins Friday and lasts through May 22.

Three other Bruins players have been revealed as having had successful offseason surgeries

DOPS announced a suspension for Kris Letang.

Calgary fired Bob Hartley, a mere one season after winning coach of the year.

Also, I’m glad I don’t live in Fort McMurray Alberta:

In happier news, Mark Giordano, Matt Martin, P.K. Subban were named finalists for NHL Foundation Player Award

P.K. Gave about a trillion dollars to Montreal area hospitals, so I suspect he has this one wrapped up.

Whew! That’s a lot. What’s in your coffee mug?

How has it gotten so late in the day without anyone saying “May the Fourth be with you”? What kind of nerds are you?

This seems like a bad idea.

With Bob Hartley gone, expect Randy Carlyle to be one of the candidates for the vacant job in Calgary. #flames #tvasports

Can he play goal?

DrHandgrenaid

Considering his coaching actively makes an entire team abjectly terrible, I really don’t see how thats actually relevant

Maybe he could play goal instead. smile

Czech logo for the World Cup of Hockey determined to be ILLEGAL, prompts uniform change:

What should be deemed illegal was the usage of Tomas Plecanec and his stupid turtle neck in that article.

Yeah, tough to have a single lion logo when Finland’s drunken-accident lion is just going to upstage you.

So, today I’m learning that Milford is a place that simultaneously exists and doesn’t exist on maps. Two different GPS units can’t find the same place. Brilliant.

Morning! Random: I finally had time to make pancakes again the other day, and I used more of that syrup you sent at Christmas time. It was so delicious!

Good morning, friends.

I have caught a cold. As annoying as it is, I’m glad that my immune system decided to work overtime in the run-up to submitting the dissertation and that it collapsed in time for me to buck the cold before the defense next week.

I spent yesterday in bed reading a fascinating book about Cabeza de Vaca (yes, that was his name), a Spaniard who got shipwrecked on his way from Cuba to Florida in the sixteenth century. The guy ended up floating on a raft across the Gulf of Mexico, walked across Texas from Galveston to somewhere around Las Cruces, NM, and then walked down to Mexico City. Along the way, he had to resort to cannibalism, became enslaved, escaped his captivity, and then, with two other Spaniards and an African slave who escaped with him, became renowned as a healer before finally returning to Europe.

The book is called “A Land So Strange.” I highly recommend it.

How’s everyone else this morning?

I will definitely be reading this. I’m pretty sure there was a movie made about this guy called “Cabeza de Vaca”. It might be Mexican and is definitely in Spanish. I remember a scene where someone was looking for a friend and CdB said “Wait I’ll shit him out in a minute”.

That sounds great! I will have to look out for it. Is it a very old book?

I just finished one of Stephen King’s more recent ones. One of the main characters was named Charlie Jacobs grin

It’s fairly recent: 2007.

I’ve been reading some of Stephen King’s son’s work (Joe Hill). I read his graphic novel series “Locke and Key” and I have two of his conventional novels on deck. I really want to read King’s Dark Tower series. Seems like it would be right up my alley. smile

I finished Dark Tower Series last year, I think overall the series is worth reading as it is different than most King stories…but like anything i wish certain aspects were handled differently….the plot devices are a little weak in some parts…in the end the first and fourth books were my favorite of the series. Also little peeved to hear the rumors around the live adaptation.

As for Hill’s books, currently reading NOS4A2 …i feel like i should be reading this during xmas but i like it. Locke and Key is one of my favorite graphic novels. I hope to read heart shaped box next.

NOS4A2 is in my pile, as is Heart Shaped Box.

Locke and Key is probably my favorite graphic novels. I think the only thing that I’ve read that compares is Sandman, honestly.

Id love to see something like a Tim Burton animated version of Locke and Key in the fashion of nightmare before xmas…i know he’d screw it up but i think it would be one of the few mediums that would do it justice….giving it that childish fantasy like quality with very dark tones where needed.

Or you could be lazy and just wait for the movie!

The London Bear

King movies are never anywhere near as good as the books. Tho the 11/22/63 mini-series was pretty faithful to the text…

I could, I suppose!

I made a stack of books that I want to read before I start teaching this summer. Let’s just say that the stack is… ambitious.
