Stanley Cup Playoffs: Round Two, Day Nine

Only one game tonight and it’s the Washington Capitals at the Pittsburgh Penguins. Why didn’t the NHL start either the St Louis or San Jose series a day later to do two and two? Good going NHL.

It’s Carvinbass18 hookin’ ya up with the recap tonight, with special guest, Pippi!

Okay here we go!

First Period:

Jay Beagle gets the scoring going with an amazing backhand top shelf on Matt Murray. Not to be outdone, Trevor Daley gets the equalizer to tie the game at 1.

Then the penalties start. First it’s Carl Hagelin with an Interference penalty on TJ Oshie (which leads to an amusing tweet).

Seriously, I don’t remember this happening at all.

The hit is late, but I think Oshie sold this one to get a call. Regardless all the questionable hits in this series are just getting old.

Then a 4-on-3 situation kicks off with a Matt Niskanen Hooking call, followed by Patric Hornqvist for Tripping, and capped off with a Jason Chimera penalty for Tripping. No one’s talking about the penalties though as Dimitri Orlov decides to send Hagelin head over heels over Braden Holtby.

The period ends with some more pushing and shoving but no more penalties or goals. We now go live to special guest reporter, Pippi.

Oh, I guess you’re not going to watch the game in the chair with me anymore.

Second Period:
Both teams enjoy scoring around the three-minute-mark as Matt Cullen scores on a partial breakaway to give the Penguins the 2-1 lead.

More penalties occur as Washington gets a Power Play chance thanks to a Ben Lovejoy Hooking call, only to have the Power Play wiped out due to an Oshie Cross-Checking minor.

As I said during the GDT, how many questionable hits are going to be made before someone dies? Evgeni Malkin just absolutely launches this hit.

Suspendable?

John Carlson ties the game up at 2 with a wrist shot, high glove side.

The period ends with both teams down a man thanks to Ian Cole and Tom Wilson going off for roughing. We now go live to special guest reporter Pippi.

Well, at least you’re watching now. Maybe you could point out the next goal for me?

Third Period:

I fell asleep during intermission. It was that or deal with the bull that is NBCSN.

I woke up with 5:22 to go with the Penguins blasting an air raid siren for what I can only assume was a fortnight. Seriously what the fuck was that? Quick check of the box score tells me no score no penalties. Okay then. Penguins get a late game Power Play after Carl Alzner gets called for high sticking Sidney Crosby. There are still no more goals and my guest reporter hasn’t moved. Thanks for nothing Pippi.

Overtime:

Patric Hornqvist ends it early (thank you) with a gift from Mike Webber.

Just an absolute gift:

Sad Ovi:

The Capitals hardly showed up for this one tonight. Now they’re going to have to battle back from a 3-1 deficit.
Next game is Saturday night in Washington. Oh there’s the two-day wait, oops, still three games on Saturday but only one on Friday. See you all then!
