Stanley Cup Playoffs: Round 3 day 1

On this night: the first game of the Eastern Conference Final The Tampa Bay Lightning vs the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Roster changes:
JT Brown returns to the Lightning roster after missing the entire last series. Anton Stralman & Steven Stamkos are still out.

First Period:

Early in the period, Ondrej Palat is robbed by Matt Murray shortly after he lets a puck ring the post behind him.

A bad boarding on Kris Letang by Ryan Callahan. Lot’s of booing by the crowd at the Consol Energy Center. He goes to the box for a 5 minute major. Letang goes down the tunnel for concussion protocol. He would return to the ice by the end of the period.

Ben Bishop looks solid during the 5 minutes. D-man Andrej Sustr snaps his stick on the penalty kill, and Forward Brian Boyle dutifully hands his over. However, while Boyle is as tall as Sustr, he is left handed, so Sustr has a wrong-handed stick and Boyle has none. About 5 shots on goal are defended by Bishop, but none get past him.

No too long after that, a frightening sequence for the Lightning happens as Bishop is trapped out of his crease, a loose puck slips behind him and is cleared by a D-man, then Bishop falls awkwardly. Trainers run out to look at him. It is not clear if he hyperextended his knee or broke his shin or re-injured his groin, but he’s in agony and will leave the ice on a gurney. Andrei Vasilevskiy comes in.
The sequence that injured Bishop:

Late in the period, Alex Killorn scores! Murray looks like he has it but can’t close his 5-hole fast enough. It’s 1-0, Tampa
Soon, Tyler Johnson gets creamed in the corner by Chris Kunitz, (might have been charging, but was definitely a big hit) and gets helped off the ice, clutching his right leg. Tampa is already playing with only 11 forwards, this leaves 10 for the rest of the period.

At the end of the 1st, it is 1-0, Tampa Bay
SOG: 10-6, Pittsburgh
Hits: 16-14, Tampa
Faceoff wins: 9-7, Penguins (56%)
Blocked shots: 6-4, Tampa
Giveaways 2-2
Takeaways 3-3

Second Period

On a zone entry, Penguin Evgeni Malkin stops skating, reaches in and hooks Victor Hedman. This is a stupid and lazy penalty to take. The Bolts go to the power play.
Valteri Filppula & Ondrej Palat would make them pay with a nice backhand shot. 2-0, Tampa

A few other penalties occur – Nikita Nesterov goes to the box for an obvious hook, putting the Pens on the PP but Tampa Kills it.
Tyler Johnson returns to the bench as Matt Cullen is whistled for tripping Alex Killorn, and Tampa Bay goes back to the power play. Johnson would be part of the second power play shift. Neither team would score during these 5-on-4 opportunities.

Late in the 2nd a nice saucer pass to Jonathan Drouin goes under Murray. 3-0, Tampa.

A tripping penalty on Victor Hedman would generate a Pittsburgh power play. Penguins would ice Crosby-Kessel-Hornqvist, who strike to put Pittsburgh on the board.

The period ends at 3-1, Tampa

SOG: 9-9
Hits: 12-10, Tampa
Faceoffs 16-3 Penguins (84%)
Blocked shots 9-5 Tampa
Giveaways 1-1
Takeaways 0-0

Third Period

Kristers Gudlevskis has suited up in Lightning sweater number 10 as benchwarmer goalie (as required by hockey law).
Brian Dumoulin would go down after Ondrej Palat pushes his head into the glass. The Penguin stays down on the ice but does not appear to really be injured. Palat would take a two minute boarding penalty. Dumoulin would get checked for concussion and miss the final 5 minutes of play.
The Penguins would go empty net for the final 3 minutes of the period.
None of this would help. Vasilevskiy would stop all 16 shots he saw this period.

SOG in the 3rd: 16-5, Penguins

For the game:

Score Tampa Bay 3 Pittsburgh 1
SOG: 20-35, Penguins
Hits: 40-31, Tampa
Faceoffs: Penguins (60%)
Blocked shots 20-10 Tampa
Giveaways 4-9

Tampa Bay now leads the series 1-0

Ryan Callahan may be getting a call from DOPS for his hit on Letang.*
Jon Cooper was asked about Bishop: “He had X-rays done and everything came back negative, so we’re hoping for the best.”
“He’s definitely hurt but there’s nothing structurally wrong. That was a big relief.”

*Update: No supplemental discipline for Callahan
