Stanley Cup Playoffs: Western Conference Final, Game One

The Blues and Sharks started their series last night at the Scottrade Center in St Louis.

In San Jose, there was a viewing party at the SAP Center. The Sharks had rally towels of their own purrfect mascot for these playoffs.

First Period:

Just after the first faceoff, Joe Thornton got the puck lost in his gear after the puck seemingly popped up out of play. This led to an interesting moment.

This happened and everyone made a big deal about it:

I know that some of us have called Max Talbot Hobo Joe in the past, but really, the real Hobo Joe is Joe Thornton.

I can think of more interesting things that two guys could be…er…doing to each other. And two different men at that.

ANYWAY, ON TO THE ACTION!

Around the halfway mark of the First, Patrik Berglund seems to have scored a goal, but it’s waved off for Goaltender Interference.

The Blues would challenge and lose. No Goal.

David Backes scores a tip-in Power Play Goal a little more than a minute after Logan Couture is penalized for Tripping Robby Fabbri.

Thirty-four seconds later, San Jose answers that goal with one of their own at even-strength from Tomas Hertl. At first, the goal was credited to Joe Pavelski, well, for two periods it would be his goal as the scoring correction was announced in the Third Period. Since it was Pavelski’s goal for a while, much was made of it being the two Captains scoring to lead their teams. I guess both teams were going full-captain.

Go Full Captain

Anyway, here’s the whole thing for you to watch and re-watch so you can see if the officials in Toronto know what they’re doing.

Second Period:

Almost halfway through the period, Jori Lehtera scored the game-winning goal on a slapshot from the face-off circle.

Third Period:

I’m not going to lie to you: I didn’t watch this game. Further truth: I’m not watching any more games this season. So, I’m sure something happened like someone was tripped up and another’s feelings were hurt but no more goals were scored, so who cares. Blues take the first game 2-1. Next game will occur on Tuesday night at 8pm in St. Louis.
