Bruins to buy out Dennis Seidenberg

From TSN’s Bob McKenzie:

The cap hits for the Bruins for the next four years:
2016-2017: $1,166,666.00
2017-2018: $2,166,666.00
2018-2019: $1,166,666.00
2019-2020: $1,166,666.00

Aaron Ward reports:

Seidenberg’s full no-movement clause made him, well, immoveable. His poor play and injury problems last season made him undesirable. There likely wasn’t any chance of him being claimed by Las Vegas in the expansion draft, or any trade partners for him when his NMC would be come a limited NTC on January 1. The cap hit is painful, especially in the second year of the buyout, but it appears that the B’s management saw a buyout as the only way to move forward.

That said, he was a crucial part of the Bruins’ Cup run in 2011 and he was a veteran leader for the team. Many, many thanks to Der Hammer for his time with the B’s and for bringing the Cup home to Boston.

With all respect, we needed to do this. Wish we could have gotten Krug for longer term though

depends on how much faith you have in your system depth…if in 4 years Gryz is an equal player for less $$…may be beneficial to not tie up that money long term.

Grizz is a different player. People hear “small offensive defenseman” and think they’re the same guy. Not even close. That said, you probably could use Grizz to replace Krug, as he can quarterback a PP and has a better defensive game (in college, at least).

So if he signs elsewhere, is Boston still taking that cap hit for all those years?

If he is claimed on waivers then I think they split the cap hit for the two years.
If he is unclaimed and bought out Boston is on the hook for the cap hit regardless of what he then does.

He was a key in the Cup win in 2011. No doubt about it. It was time, though and Seids had to go. If that means signing Krug for longer, I’m all for it.

How about 4 years?

Boston Bruins and Torey Krug agreeing to a 4 year/ $5.25M AAV deal. #confirmed— Aaron Ward (@NHL_AaronWard) June 30, 2016

Good deal for both sides. A bit higher then I expected but I like it.

Same. I was thinking more like 4.5 but hard to quibble over 750K, especially given the state of the defense.

I hope he finds a job somewhere else…maybe join the Ex-Boston Panthers….Stick taps for days.

Wow. Good move, Donny. I love Seids, but it is time.

Sad to see him go but it was the right move. Needed to be done.

Agreed, it was time to move on from Seids. DJ Bean thinks it was the wrong move, but was there really any other option? I highly doubt the front office would be able to trade him with his stock so low.

I said this on Twitter, but the one thing that does suck about it, is that we have an (albeit smaller) cap hit anchor still, except now it’s twice as long.

And now we can’t even play the anchor. Although that might not be so bad?

That does suck, but at least there’s roster flexibility.

That’s just it: I’m betting that the thinking was that the roster spot here was more valuable than the full cap space.

Kind of like when deciding to buy or fix/build something to save money, the question is also “is it worth my time to save money?”

Very much agree on the roster spot

For sure.
