Morning Free Association, June 30 – LOL wut

I woke up this morning and it was still true. The Habs really did trade PK Subban for Shea Weber, straight up. As a Bruins fan, I am puking rainbows of joy over this. The most insufferable franchise in hockey has been laid low. They’ve set their franchise back at least a decade with this move. Yes, the Bruins traded Seguin and they traded Dougie and they traded Joe, BUT THE HABS TRADED PK. All the torch-passing and Cup-counting and endless self-celebrating gets put to rest, at least for a while.

As a hockey fan, however, I don’t like this at all. It’s bad for hockey. He loved his team, its city, and its fans. He’s one of the best players in the sport and he was the face of the franchise. He deserved to be a Hab for life. It just isn’t right and there’s no good explanation for it.

I’m considering flying home to attend the Habs @ B’s game on October 22 just so I can start a chant of “WHERE IS PK?”

What’s on tap?

Well, yesterday was something. And I saw something about the Bruins putting Seids on waivers for a buyout? Interesting.

He has been waived with the intent of buying him out. Today was the deadline.

So…im curious what people’s fill in the blanks are:

Beleskey – DK – Pasta
Marshand – Bergy – _____
Vatrano – Spooner – Hayes
____ – Acciari – ____

Chara – Krug
Morrow – C. Miller
Quaid – K. Miller

Rask – ____

Kelly, Stempy, Ericsson, Liles, Gus, Smith are some of the Bruin UFAs… Bruins have $48.5 on the books… who would you resign/sign from the UFA market to fill the holes and remain in the Cap. Im not talking trades cause people come up with foolish trade scenarios.

Resign Liles! I didn’t mind Landon Ferraro on fourth line, but now maybe Ferlin gets a legit shot. I like Stempniak with Bergy and Marchand. Go after Demers and buyout Seids. Who cares who the back up goalie is, really.

Rumor is that Demers has already all but agreed with Edmonton. Rumor of course so who knows.

I agree, I like Liles and Stemp coming back. Monster showed the difference between a reliable goalie v.s. Sveddy…i wouldnt say its no big deal..but not over using Rask is important.

Id really like to see Demers on a second pairing, resign Liles and have K. Miller as your 7th Dman and somehow trade Quaid assuming C. Miller is ready for the big time.

I was kinda hoping Connolly was gonna be kept on and put on Bergy’s wing and give hima solid spot there with consistancy maybe have a breakout year for cheap money….but…i realize that is not likely.

Of course signing Loui would be perfect for that first line…and id love to see a Vatrano – Spooner- Pasta line…dear god.

Oh shit! Did I forget SIGN LOUIEEEEE!!!!? Just do it!

NESN’s reporting that it’s looking increasingly unlikely that a deal with Loui will be reached. I just hope he doesn’t wind up wearing a toilet seat on his chest!

Oh dear lord, please no. Not for the kind of term he is looking for.

Im ok with 5×5

Too long for me. On the wrong side of 30 and too many concussions. I’d max out at 3×6, maybe 4×5. If I recall, rumor was he wanted 6×6 which is just insane.

Age doesnt bother me, seeing how the miles on his wheels arent too bad sitting out the concussion time…however the cuncussion history is a good worry…but i think the limit for me is 5 x 5. I’d obviously take less of either…but that would be my cutoff.

Still not impossible for Connolly. They may have just wanted him cheaper than the QO (which admittedly was already cheap). Just because they didn’t qualify him it doesn’t mean they can’t/won’t bring him back (though I agree it seems unlikely)

Having 2.5 tied up in a 7th D is brutal…

Morning All!
Much work! No booze! Such madness!
Nice game of disc last night with Jo and Ian (my youngest). Then a late night swim.
So much to do here this time of year. I like it and it’s beautiful here when everything is done, but sometimes it’s hard to stop. When you are at work all the time, you always see things that need to be done.
I have to save time for a kayak rolling session in the pool later. Jo really needs to work on hers. Mine is improving, but not bomb proof yet.
Water with lemon juice is on tap. I may be puckering up all day!

How was the Park? You said it was a new course? Only one ive played in Bristol was Park Page last year and i think i hit a tree every 10 feet in the fall.

Page is tough, but I love it. Rockwell is tougher still. They have some really great holes. They have a few that are looooong. Great putting greens. Some of the holes are like tunnels through the woods that open into a perfectly round clearing with a target in it. Tee boxes are nice! some kind of artificial turf. I like it.

Nice…i like the fairway style holes…the courses we play in Pitts are beautifully done, youd really like them. To me Page just has no sense of direction…it was just…find the hole and start throwing at it and hope you miss any tree that was in the way.

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=5469

those are the two ones we play most…then theres one other thats a pro level course that is just unfair.

Yup. Rockwell is meant to be pro level and some of the holes I was looking for the short tee. dgcourse review is a great site.

Good morning!

I’m a little late, but it’s been a crazy morning, and it’s going to be an insane day. End of month always is. June is our second biggest month, so this is serious fucking business today.

A few things:

  • I’m gonna miss PK being in the division. He’s good and I don’t want to play against him, but I really, REALLY enjoy it.
  • Preds got the better of that deal for sure. I don’t know WTF the Habs were doing.
  • Who knew that it would be such a crazy day that the Stamkos signing would get no coverage?
  • Hall move isn’t bad for either team IMO.
  • I’m going to lose my mind today.

I think the Hall trade was wayyyy one sided. Chia really loves Selling top scoring talent for systemic “holes”.

Eh. I think long run (assuming Larsson works out), the trade works pretty well for both teams. The trade isn’t as shocking to me as it is to others. I think people are blowing it up simply because Hall was a #1 pick.

Pretty good peice on the stats and the return…honestly i didnt even realize that he was in the top 3 for 5on5 scoring.

Nice. I have to give them credit. I fully went into that expecting some BS argument in favor of the trade, pointing out all his deficiencies a la the Boston media handling of the Hamilton trade.

Nah. The SBNation sites across the board are often more knowledgeable than the mainstream from what I’ve seen.

    Well… SOME SB sites…

Also depends on the MSM. I am very selective in what I bother to read, largely cause I think most are idiots. Cullen is one of the must reads for me. I also miss Bourne’s work terribly.

A moment of defense (because that’s what I do): Even those “some” sites generally disagreed with the media. Said issues came partially from actually going too far to that side. That’s all I’ve got to say on that. Moving right the hell on.

And yes, there are good guys in the MSM, too.

Interesting how the difference in state income taxes is starting to have such a major effect on free agency. It’s almost unfair honestly. (Taken from twitter) Stamkos signed an 8yr, 8.5M deal in Tampa for a gross of 68M. In order for Toronto to pay him the same they’d have had to sign a 7yr, 12.4M deal for a gross of 87M. Even accounting for the difference in years it’s an 11M annual hit. Insane that Tampa can save 2.5M a year against the cap for the same net contract

    IntentionallyWidenberg
    Admin

It doesn’t even make sense. (Unless the guy I saw on Twitter was figuring on some sort of interest return on savings.) In my back-of-envelope math, it comes out to TOR/ONT/CA charging 27% higher tax rates than TAM/FL/USA. Federal income tax alone for a 7 figure income is somewhere in 32-36% range (depending on who was majority in congress on any particular year). I don’t know Florida income tax rate – it’s probably a flat rate at <%3. And there's probably no municipal tax.

If I didn't see it from a CPA, I'd think it was complete BS.

Florida income tax rate is 0%. Same goes for Tennessee, Nevada and Texas. They actually have a major advantage, especially over states like CA who have very high taxes

In 2013-14 the most a team could pay a player was $12.8 million. After taxes, the take home pay from that could be as low as $5.8 million in California or as high as $7.8 million in Alberta. Is living in California worth a $2 million dollar pay cut?

Outdated but interesting information. Shows the ‘true’ cap for all the teams and how much each team pays in state/provincial and federal taxes.
