Morning Free Association, July 19

Not too much happening on the Bruins front except for:

Also the Bruins finished up their tour in China:

Around the NHL though the New York Rangers traded Derrick Brassard to Ottawa for Mika Zibanejad:

Who makes trades on July 18th anyway?

What’s on tap folks?

I had a dream that Don Sweeney was singing Let’s give ’em something to talk about. Please, please give us something to talk about, but not the Dougie, Tyler, Phil kind of something, okay?

Good Morning All! Make mine a double bagelhead, please!!

Working. This no drinking thing is making me too not lazy. No bueno!

Nice game of disc last evening with my youngest. We slipped it in between thunderstorms. He won by a stroke.

Jo and I are heading to the Mongaup RIver this weekend, plus a day of disc golf in Warwick, NY (disc golf heaven). We need to prep for a tourney we’re playing there next month.

Coffee in. Seltzer and lemon juice is on tap all day.

It looks like the trade came up in a Sens media conference call yesterday:

“Our ultimate goal is to make the playoffs again, and we feel Derick’s going to help us make the playoffs.” — Pierre Dorion

Brassard ‘a better hockey player at this point in time’ than Zibanejad, says Sens GM

A lofty goal. They want to get into the postseason with an unfavorable seeding and then get kicked out. Yay.
You go Ottawa. Spend! Spend to the floor!

Not that the trade is horrible. Brassard did put the puck in the net a few more times than Zibanejad. I can also see them wanting to swap the handedness of their center to get the puck to their favorite right winger (Mark Stone?) more often. It’s just that they could, and should, have done more, in obvious ways. I guess that is the hallmark of the Atlantic Division this offseason.

Pure financial trade. Waited til yesterday to get Rangers to pay the bonus on the 15th. Now they get 3 years of cheap money (10.5M) for a solid player and get rid of a guy they weren’t going to be able to afford next contract. Even gave up a second to make it happen.

Brassard > Zibanejad. NYR salary dump.

Other way around. Senators financial dump. Mika was going to be asking for more money after this year. Ottawa gets cost certainty, NY gets financial freedom and a good pick
