Morning Free Association, August 19

For this MFA all I wanted to do was embed this tweet and be done.

Yes, the Bruins are doing their Bear Tracks thing, which is basically footage that will be used for “Behind the B”. Yeah, I know that some people don’t care at all what players are like off the ice. But, I do. I like to get to know players. For me, if there is no human connection, why am I watching this sport? I want to know that players have good things going on in their lives, happy homes, and other interests.

David Backes loves animals and he doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk:

He has a animal charity that is kind of hard to explain, however, I will try: Athletes for Animals recruits athletes to use their elevated platform to raise awareness for shelter animals, including adoption and advice for owners, and fund raising for no-kill shelters that demonstrate best practices. Yeah, so adopt, don’t shop being told to you by an athlete. Spay and neuter your pets said by someone other than Bob Barker.

Bob Barker

In my opinion, anyone who raises awareness for homeless animals and works with them is a good egg. David and his wife Kelly also produced a documentary on the lives of some of the pitbulls rescued from Bad Newz Kennels, Michael Vick’s dog fighting ring, called The Champions. It is at times sad, uplifting, and educational about the breed and the rehabilitation of the animals- allowing healing through time, space, love, and patience. If you have Netflix, you can watch it there. (Yes, I did say much of this, much less eloquently, on this week’s Bearly on Topic episode.)

Anyway, David Backes also does other things like curling:

and being friendly to Zebras:

Enjoy your weekend!
