Morning Free Association, August 26

“I’m 100 percent committed to the Stars.”, says Jamie Benn.

Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn has withdrawn from Canada’s World Cup of Hockey team. He will be replaced on Team Canada by Logan Couture (a.k.a Croatian Tom Cruise).
Croatian Tom Cruise
Benn stated that he was focused on completely recovering in time for the start of the Stars’ upcoming season. He had undergone abdominal surgery on June 14th to repair some core muscle damage suffered this summer, and was speculated to be able to attend the World Cup tournament, which begins on September 17th.

Dallas has been busy of late. They recently signed free agent Jiri Hudler to a one-year deal. Hudler scored a career high 31 goals for Calgary in 2014/15, but regressed to half that production last year.

Former Bruin and current WCH Team Canada member, Tyler Seguin believes they have entered their Stanley Cup window, which is ironic, since Seguin missed most of last season’s playoff run.

As for the World Cup, Benn isn’t the only player to drop out. Defenseman Duncan Keith, who is recovering from a knee injury, has dropped out and will be replaced by Jay Bouwmeester. When asked about it, P.K. Subban was possibly quoted as saying “Wow, barbecue really is much better here than in Quebec”

Yeah, but then we’re limited by tacos and The Great Cilantro Battle.

Can you be hungover from lack of sleep? Because I think that’s what it is. I can say that the Smuttynose something something something d’Shire is very good, especially if you like lambic but find them too sweet.

DrHandgrenaid

I recall some years ago I was in the Yukon (as you do). We’d just come out of the field and had rolled into Whitehorse at about 3 am. I woke up feeling like ass, and remarked to my supervisor and field assistant that I’d be almost convinced I was hungover had I not known with the kind of certainty usually reserved for death and taxes that I hadn’t been drinking the night before

the german hammer
Admin

Oh, I had two strong beers and plenty of water. It’s the stumbling into bed at 2:42am that I kind of regret because I was hoping to be home much earlier.

DrHandgrenaid

Truth be told, I think most of my hangovers these days are lack of sleep and low blood sugar, so this all probably checks out

the german hammer

Sleep is something that I want so badly. I’ve got to develop a good relationship with it again.

DrHandgrenaid

Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

How’s it going, my dearest Oyster crackers? I’ve been busily running around punching rocks and, in a plot twist, rescuing Syrian refugees from the mean streets of Halifax. How’re things?

DrHandgrenaid

This is accurate. Also, I am pretty much the antithesis of Reagan. Even severely Alzheimers’d Reagan who probably didn’t even know he was president those last few years

the german hammer
Admin

I didn’t even recognise that it was Reagan. I don’t watch the Family American Dad stuff.

I once had a discussion with a friend about which was dumber: rocks or bricks, because I wanted to know which saying was truly better (“dumb as rocks” vs “Dumb as bricks”) as I had a habit in the late 90’s of comparing dumb things/ people. Anyway, we arrived at the conclusion that bricks were dumber because they needed to be formed whereas rocks at least had it together to be in some form or another.

Nothing dumber than a bag of hammers, though. Like, the tool hammer.

Yeah, but we’re not going to say that so as to not upset my delicate sensibilities.

DrHandgrenaid

I tend to avoid the expression ‘dumber than a box of rocks’ for mainly professional reasons. I tend to go with ‘dumber than a bag of hammers’, but realizing now that this may be offensive to yourself, I may need to reconsider

the german hammer

Can we agree on “dumb as bricks”?

Oh, we could say “dumb as a bag of pucks”!

MadScientist72

Definitely needs to be “dumber than”. For most of the people you might use this in reference to, “dumb as” would be offensive to rocks/bricks/pucks.

the german hammer

I guess so.

DrHandgrenaid

I like the alliteration of ‘bag of bricks’. Also, thats a Flogging Molly song, which is a check in its favour

And joke ruined lol.

I have no other ideas of punching rocks (bricks) in my head than that lol.

I googled “punching rocks gifs” and got a bunch of The Rock gifs. I should have expected that.

the german hammer

I wouldn’t recommend either punching rocks or punching The Rock.

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

Having literally punched rocks whilst attempting to do so figuratively, I can’t recommend it. I also would be inclined to recommend against punching The Rock as well. But really, why would you want to? I feel like Duane Johnson is sufficiently charismatic to be much more huggable than punchable. Also, hugging him probably doesn’t result in a coma and your jaw wired shut, whereas punching him does both of those things

the german hammer
Admin

I’m afraid that I have to insist that the idea of trying to punch The Rock would exist only in the “because I can” category of life experiences. It would end horribly for most, I suspect.

Good Morning All! I’m surprisingly chipper this morning, in spite of three straight late nights.

The second game of last night’s doubleheader was a real shit show. It went through OT and all the way to the shootout for extra shittiness.
One of my friends got in a pretty good fight at the end of regulation. My son and I were separating combatants pretty regularly through the third and OT. I can’t wait for THAT playoff game (these teams are set for first round mayhem… they hate each other).
I got up early and picked a quart of blueberries this morning, but the pancake chef was too tired to cook. Solution: I made eggs for brekkie and she’ll make blueberry pancakes for dinner… because we’re adults, damn it! (I’m always tempted to spell that in Faulkner – dammit!).
Mowing today and finishing the hundred foot hedge that I’ve been trimming for three days.
Coffee…. I’m thinking a second cup is in order (after my nap), then seltzer all day.
Living up to the moniker today. I didn’t even double space – #livingwithlongwindedness

finishing the hundred foot hedge

That sounds like it could be the title for a new Harry Potter novel – Harry Potter and the Hundred Foot Hedge. Of course, if that were the case, the hedge would actually have a hundred feet that it could walk around on.

Sometimes I wish that hedge would walk away. It does look great when it’s done, though.

Keeping in mind that my favorite thing to do is make a coach or player yell “WHAATT??”, this is a conversation from last night’s game. Matching minors are assessed to two knuckleheads. The knucklehead in blue says “I’m not going to the box.” (Thank you for giving me this opportunity, blue guy!) “Oh, you don’t have to go” says your friendly neighborhood ref. “I don’t?” says blue guy hopefully and a bit surprised. “No, if you don’t want to go to the penalty box, I won’t make you go there….(Borat pause)… You can go straight to the locker room.”
“WHAAAAATTT?”
Mission accomplished.

Ciao mio famiglia Bruins

  • A little F1 news, Esteban Ocon debuts for Manor officially today which is pretty cool, even though the Manor team has a really weak car. Good luck kid
  • I might be going to Connecticut to see my Grandmother tomorrow, the plans have changed since yesterday which is making things complicated. She’s 95 and starting to slip health wise. My mom is already down there and we were going to ride together. No idea what’s going on.
  • Nice to see Benn putting team first, now if only he could have that kind of commitment to his lady friends wink
  • It’s going to feel weird not having a softball game on Sunday. I never like the first weekend when the season’s over.
  • Just finished my cup o’ java & now it’s water on tap for the rest of the day.

I like waffle fries and all, but they are ill suited to poutine as well. Same with spicy curly fries. love ’em, not good for poutine. gotta keep it to normal fries or maybe shoestring if you must. tater tots and home fries can be suitable if you wanna get zany though.

…tater tots and home fries can be suitable if you wanna get zany though

Yep, that’s the way I show that I am zany. In fact, I’ve been warned about how crazy I seem with regards to potatoes.

I swear, we should just dedicate one MFA a week to our food issues, how we like it, how we don’t, the battles over cilantro and mayo, yellow vs brown mustard, etc.

I’m new to F1 (only been watching since the V6’s came out). I like Raikkenen for Ferrari. I can’t get behind Vettel due to his constant whining (although his beef with Kviat in the beginning of the year was fun).

I really like both Red Bull drivers. Verstappen is a ton of fun to watch. I find myself pulling for Force India often & obviously Haas for #MURICA reasons.

I really can’t stand both Merc drivers & Williams.
