Morning Free Association, October 4

Tonight is preseason game #5. It’s a special one, because we’re getting our first look at the new and improved Montreal Canadiens. Obviously neither team is going to ice the lineup we’ll be seeing during the regular season, but it’ll still be a good time.

Also, it’s always a good idea to perfect your Hab hating before the season officially begins. It’s an important skill all Bruins fans should have in their repertoire.

Patrick

Sucks

Rip markov

Finally, and most importantly…

At times like this, it’s very important to remember why we feel the way we do. Please take a moment to revisit this classic Bruins vs. Habs incident. Ah, memories…

You should use some of that vacation to come to Boston and go to the game on Dec. 20th.

I really only have one regret from the past five years. I wish I had taken more time off from work. I wish I could have visited family in Boston. I’m looking at the next two and half years and I don’t see how I’m making it to Boston

Anything over 45 minutes requires that a bag be packed!

I used to have problems with driving long distances but then I learned how to roadtrip. Don’t worry about the time it takes, make an experience out of it.

The direct route requires driving through Canada. This is a good idea. I might have to contact my old road tripping buddies. One lives in NC, the other is Madison, WI. With planning, anything is possible.

There’s a wine warehouse about a mile away advertising 24 bottles of Samuel Adams for £24 – is it a sign?

I always hate election season, because New Hampshire candidates get smeared non-stop on Boston-based channels. I know very little about Maggie Hassan and Kelly Ayotte except that they have been loathed for years by “New Hampshire voters” (those who happen to be located in the Washington beltway).
If that stuff could be kept quarantined to WBIN & WMUR, I’d be OK because that’s the risk one takes by watching stuff from the Manchester market.

Its pretty funny how it happened. I got an email from an editor of some obscure journal (Turkish Journal of Geosciences) asking me to be a peer reviewer on this paper from a couple of Iranian authors on some rocks like my thesis rocks in southern Iran. I was skimming the figures before deciding whether or not to accept the responsibility, and notice a few photos that looked very familiar. Checked a paper of mine form 2013 (in a much higher profile international journal, not anything obscure) and there they were. I emailed the editor back in rage, and got the reply this morning that they will reject the manuscript, but if I could please accept reviewership and write something to that effect so that it is documented

Oh for real? I just remember summer before 12th grade, I had to read that book (Billy Budd) for my World Literature class started. I waited until 2 weeks before because pssssht, that book’s thin, I’ll get through it no problem! I think I had to put it down after every…three pages or so. Like watching fucking mud roll down a hill.

But yeah, Jude the Obscure. I don’t want to give anything away but there was one point where I was like, “Are you fucking kidding me?! This kid is ridiculous!”
I also had to read Daisy Miller by Henry James, but I quite liked that one. smile

Yeah, I had to read Budd, too – it was bad, but Moby was orders of magnitude worse. I was also subjected to C&P and I agree – it was a torture worthy of Stalinist Russia.

Another literary nightmare from high school was Gustav Flaubert’s Madame Bovary.

The only things I can remember reading AND enjoying from those days are Poe, Shakespeare (particularly Macbeth and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

I mean she wasn’t the most sympathetic character, but I just understood how uncomfortable she was, living a life she didn’t want when her imagination produced all these doozies for her. And the way Flaubert described what happened to her, that was classic.

I certainly felt genuinely bad for her husband!

I didn’t care for Dreiser’s An American Tragedy. I was supposed to read Ellison’s Invisible Man for an independent project, but I didn’t. I went from the Cliff Notes instead – the teacher said that you couldn’t rely on them and expect to get good grade in her class, but she still asked to keep a copy of my paper to show future classes. Yup, that’s right.

It’s being shown on RDS, which hopefully means NHL.tv will have it. I had a look at the RDS website and it’s all in French, so the commentary could be interesting…

    It’s a Bruins home game.
At the Centre Videotron, in Quebec
    Broadcast only on Canadian TV
    In French.

    AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven’t ponied up the cash for GameCenter this year, (since no one in the house is following any remote teams), so I may not even have a chance to see it.
