Morning Food Association, October 14

Good morning everyone and welcome back to our 4th installment of the Morning Food Association show!

null

Today’s MFA player is Kevan Miller
null

Okay okay everyone we all know the short comings of Miller and that’s not the point here, what is the point is that this happened:null

So Miller’s food because of his now famous (infamous?) crab walking style of defense is clearly Crab Cakes. Truth be told, I’ve never made crab cakes, nor have I even eaten them, so I don’t know if they are good or not. I hear they are famous in Maryland, and that’s all I’ve got for you on that. My go to website for recipes is Allrecipes.com, and they’ve got a good one (maybe?) right here.

By the way, did anyone see Dekeyser’s goal against Tampa last night? There won’t be a more bizarre one all season. Poor Bishop

I hate Tampa. Good.

Miss Muse

Yeah, that was sad. At least they won, though.

phonymahoney

Sad? Not sad, kind of awesome.

It looked like Bishop got shot on the first angle the gif showed.

phonymahoney

Yeah. It was pretty awesome. I love fluke goals.

Hello all!

Had a Salted Caramel Mocha today (which I have decreed are way better than Pumpkin Spice Lattes, come at me, bros) and went to CVS to pick up some Mucinex which works a hell of a lot better than DayQuil even if it costs twice as much, so that is why I am running late today.

David Pastrnak this a.m. is the 2nd most added player in Fantasy Hockey for Yahoo. I love it!

Any good plans this weekend? I really want to check out this Lichtenstein exhibit, and hopefully will if my cough behaves itself.

Last night was fun. I only caught the second period, but I liked what I saw!

phonymahoney
Editor

Dude. 63/42/88 was FUN. I’m sure 63/37/88 will be fantastic.
I’ve said it before, but I love the flexibility and versatility that adding Backes brings to this team.

Dr. Medievalist
Member
Dr. Medievalist

Yeah! And I love that Marchand is just dominating, too.

Watching Backes is going to be a lot of fun. I kept seeing somewhat snarky people on Twitter say that he’s basically Lucic with effort. I don’t know about that, but I like what I see so far.

Miss Muse
Editor

How is “Lucic with effort” a BAD THING?!

Satan 81's Sister

I was wondering this all well.

phonymahoney

Y yo tambien.

Dr. Medievalist

Dr. Medievalist

I don’t like that criticism of Lucic. Yeah, he’d take a shift off every now and then, but meh.

I also don’t like comparing players that way. It seems too easy/not really representative of who that player is individually.

But I don’t know, maybe their styles of player are similar enough to warrant that sort of comparison. I still don’t like it, though.

EDIT: I guess what I’m getting it is that I’m questioning the complimenting of one player by demeaning another. It’s lazy.

The Once and Future Bagel Bruin
Member

Never in the playoffs though. He would occasionally play poorly, but never took a game off in the playoffs.

phonymahoney
Editor

I will agree with that.

Dr. Medievalist
Member
Dr. Medievalist

Fine, whatever. Doesn’t change my dislike of the criticism.

Why do we have to praise Backes by insulting Lucic? That’s my question.

Maybe another way of looking at it is this: We’ve talked many times about not revisiting players who have left/been traded/just aren’t on the team anymore. We’ve discussed several times about moving on and just talking about the team where it is now. So it seems out of place, at least to me, to make a comparison to a former player to talk about someone new to the team. As far as I’m concerned, it’s discordant and unproductive.

To be honest, this isn’t a hill I’m willing to die on, but I think it’s a fair question to ask.

phonymahoney
Editor

It was an easy comparison to make, I guess. I’d refer to him as the poor man’s patrice bergeron, with a little more sandpaper.

Dr. Medievalist
Member
Dr. Medievalist

Yeah, a little too easy, I think. That’s why I’m questioning it. That’s what discussion is all about, right? smile

FWIW: I’m glad to have a legitimate power foward back on the team. Should help open space for Krejci and others to get creative. grin

The London Bear

Agreed. I loved Loui but give me Backes any day

phonymahoney

I love Loui too, and I always will, but I REALLY appreciate that Backes has a little more fire in his belly, too.

I know it’s early, but that 2015 draft class looks very promising for the Boston Bruins. Carlo made the team, and Senyshyn and DeBrusk are not far behind. Does Jeremy Lauzon make the Boston Bruins next year or the season after?

The Once and Future Bagel Bruin

Guys. After this year Chara as ONE year left on his contract.

I hope so…but in the same sense…the more the young prospects earn a spot the more i hate those Quaid and Miller signings.

The Once and Future Bagel Bruin

Liles will be gone after this year. I know we still have an abundance of Dmen, but that is one guy off the books.

phonymahoney

You never know, one may be moved

Thetallest81

One can only hope. I am still thinking a spooner, Quaid $ prospect (or 1st rnd) for a top D talent is in the works….

that would be best case.

phonymahoney
Editor

I’d trade a first over Spooner. You know what you’re getting with Spoons, you don’t know what you’re getting with a pick.

Thetallest81
Member
Thetallest81

i think it would be spooner and a 1st to get rid of Quaid and bring on someone with value….if you can get away with a 1st and Quaid and a Zboril level player for someone like Trouba then more power to Sweeney.

phonymahoney
Editor

Then again, if you have Backes, Spooner is flexible. But I think I’d move Vatrano before Spooner… but, different values

Long-Winded Striped Mofo
Member
Long-Winded Striped Mofo

Tough call. I love Spooner and his price tag. I also feel Vatrano could develop into a bona fide sniper, and those are hard to find. I’d like to see the Bs keep both, but if one had to go I would pick Spoons.

phonymahoney
Editor

I’m really on the fence about the whole thing. That’s why I say draft pick.

Zboril has turned himself around, as well.

hahahaha good form on the crab crakes. my mom makes phenomenal crab cakes btw.

So…i had to stop watching the game to drive home when it was 3-3…got home 30 min later and saw that they decided to score more…thats nice.

Also, granted that its the first game but nice to see the guys they shelled contracts out for making impact from the get go. SIGN PASTA NOW!!!!!!! lol

phonymahoney

Good morning, peeps!

I was going to post some thoughts but I don’t have the attention span to deal with it right now.

Defense looked better than I expected. David, David As Well, and Brad certainly looked great. Chemistry is a thing, IMO, and I’m glad to see that we’ve found it. Missed Patrice, but glad (and surprised) they were able to function without him.

Cousin’s/roommate’s girlfriend (also my roommate) hung out with me while I watched the game, so I really couldn’t pay as close attention as I had hoped. Oh well – there’s always tomorrow.

phonymahoney

Clearly, I just didn’t feel like doing bullet points, but I DO have an attention span!

Hey guys. Heard we won. Thats pretty swell

So, Im still having massive problems with my yahoo settings. I’ve googled my problems and the help screen for step by step looks nothing like my yahoo interface. So I guess I’m running some obsolete version of yahoo. Pretty hopeless. I might miss some stuff and I can’t get my name to not say “hidden”. So thats me for the record. Also its impossible to change the time zone from LA, so If I forget to play enough goalies a week sorry, Im not AWOL, Im just stupid.

Anyway great win, and it seems after the softie, Rask shored up the posts after right? Thats good, Not that anything less than as shutout season would stop people from wanting to run him out of town but hey, you can’t please everyone…

Hey Muse!

Thats the one I didn’t autodraft in. However, I think everyone else did. So I have no idea how good I really am, or how good you guys are yet. We will see when injuries start happening. For now, all I care about it the Bruins are undefeated

Well its the other way around. (Thats a disturbing GIF by the way) Im doing well with team I drafted and the team I autodrafted is head to head so I dont know how that will turn out yet. Im still figuring out the rules anyway, its simple enough but the hockey schedule is the reason for most of my confusion. ITs not as straight forward as fantasy football

Rask ALWAYS struggles in October. In January 2016 I did the research, and it is by far his worst month. Most of the time when someone claims they start the season slow, it is not true. However, that claim fits Rask well.

IntentionallyWidenberg
Admin

Agreed, I’d noticed this as well. GH & I went to the Black & Gold game a couple of preseasons ago and he looked like utter crap. Last season he was in bad shape to start out the season – it’s like he didn’t know how to use his glove & blocker at all (more likely the defense in front of him was a joke, and it took a while for him to feel comfortable enough with his positioning & butterfly to get his hands into the act). This year he has looked much better – perhaps keeping fresh via the World Cup has him a couple weeks ahead of schedule.

The London Bear
Member

How did he do at the World Cup? I didn’t see any Finland games, but their results were really disappointing.

Miss Muse
Editor

I *think* they went with Rinne most of the time anyway, so apologies to Finland but ::CarlShrug::

IntentionallyWidenberg
Admin

I think we get a lot of that out of Rask — he’ll let in a softie, then he’ll lock things down for the rest of the night. I don’t want to listen to talk radio talk about him today — they were just miserable yesterday afternoon.

phonymahoney
Editor

Yeah, agreed. It’s like he needs the soft one to wake him up.

Muffinman3
Member
Muffinman3

But that wasnt always the case. Thats only been present the last year or so. Long enough for people to think he sucks

phonymahoney
Editor

People don’t seem to understand that he’s not the ONLY person who should be stopping goals from happening, either.

Thetallest81
Member
Thetallest81

While i dont disagree…but that first goal from that far out you pay Tuukka 7mil to make stops like that.

phonymahoney
Editor

Oh, I totally agree. I mean, he’s not going to stop ALL of them, but yeah.

Muffinman3
Member
Muffinman3

Oh I agree. That was a bad one to let in. It was a nice shot, but that doesnt mean it should have gone in.

What I’m saying is, I get this reaction every time that Rask lets in a goal that I have to defend him because of the misappropriate amount of hate he gets regularly. So even when I feel he needs to be criticized, I still find myself getting defensive reactively.

phonymahoney
Editor

Yeah, Tuukka’s problem, other than the Bruins’ defense, seems to be that he’s not Tim Thomas.

Thetallest81
Member
Thetallest81

I don’t care what anyone says, until i see rask become a brick wall for a playoff series and gets in a team’s head i don’t have faith that he can do that.

If you look at goalies like Price and Ward (back in the day) and Holtby and so on…that can just make the other team HATE facing him….Tim has done that…Rask…not so much yet. So i think thats where the “he isnt Timmy” comes from.

To me Rask is an athletic positional goalie that will keep you in games. And honestly for a regular season thats all you can ask for. But in the playoffs sometimes you really need someone that looks like he is in a zone that is beyond human. I’ve never seen him steal a series that the team had no right in winning.

At least he doesn’t get lost out of the net like he used to so i give him credit for that. That is the one thing that infuriated me about him.

So that all said, im no hater of him. I am still cautious about his ability to win a cup and question if he is worth 7mil a year. Is he a vesna winner and a top 5 goalie…he sure can be. I will defend him when a goal goes in that he has no right saving. But i will criticize him if he lets in one from the dots with no screen.

IntentionallyWidenberg
Admin

Rask was that guy vs the Pens in 2013, but that seems to have been the exception, not the rule.

Thetallest81
Member
Thetallest81

Agreed 134/136 shots stopped in 4 games was definitely a key to the series..but i was also not exactly impressed with the Pens either that series. Crosby only had 10 shots on goal the whole series. Malkin and Neil were the only consistent players. Other than game three the pens looked lethargic.

Not to discredit Rask at all for how well he played, one goal in 54 shots in game three was ridiculous, and it was his best playoff performance ever. But in agreement i feel like that was the exception not the rule.

phonymahoney
Editor

Well put, for sure.

I do feel like everyone discounts the 2013 run, though. I understand he didn’t steal the series (obviously), but he didn’t play badly, either.

IntentionallyWidenberg

I almost felt I needed to invoke Rivers Cuomo due to the similarity of our arguments.

(To make it stranger, my comment wasn’t indented on my screen, so it looks as if your comment were a reply to mine even though it is timestamped earlier.)

phonymahoney

Unfortunately, all the unnecessary crap Rask gets has made me a Rask apologist.
