Morning Free Association, October 27

The Bruins are a mess.

Could it be because of this?

injury-list

It’s part of it.

That’s all I’ve got.

“Have Flames put Dougie Hamilton on the trade block?”

Answer: No, but it’s sure funny that there’s even an article about it.

If they did, would it be worth bringing him back to Boston?

Satan81
Admin

Moot, since he doesn’t want to play here. If he did want to play here…dunno…he’s been getting 3rd-pair minutes in Calgary. Not sure what’s up with that.

Maybe his time in Calgary has shown him that he needs a system like Julien’s in order to play well.

Satan81

One would figure that with Brodie, Giordano, and Dougie the Flames would have a ludicrously good defense.

Besides the top line, everyone has been awful. I find it hard to call out one or two or three players when they’ve all been wilting flowers. Get it together Bruins!

DrHandgrenaid

Not everyone. The Schaller-Moore-Acciari unit has been a revelation. Potentially one of the better 4th lines in the league. Also the Charlo pairing.

I’m not impressed to tell the truth with Chara and Carlo. For every glimpse of promise, there are plenty of bad turnovers in every, from breakout passes to bad D to D passes in the offensive zone, cough ups in the neutral zone and lost battles.

I can give the fourth line credit but I also don’t heap too much praise on them.

imbiginjapan

Yeah that fourth line has been a lot of fun to watch. They just make things happen.

The London Bear

They win battles, put some pressure on and are defensively responsible. Can’t ask any more of a fourth line. Moore has looked a great signing so far.

DrHandgrenaid

Hes looking like a killer mentor for Acciari to boot

phonymahoney

For sure. I’m really enjoying the Moore Friars line.

Bagel’s thoughts on the Bruins.

I bet Tuukka doubters changed their minds. This is what you get when you have an average defense and rookie goalies.

Also, I remember why Anton Khudobin spent time in the AHL after his last stint with the Bruins.

Colin Miller is fine. He’s a second year NHL who still needs a lot of work, but the reward is there. This is why LA felt it was okay to trade him.

Can the second and third lines please show up? Teams know they can spend all their time on the first line. That will ruin your defense and offense.

phonymahoney

I bet Tuukka doubters changed their minds. This is what you get when you have an average defense and rookie goalies.

My office Tuukka doubter actually said to me, “We really need Tuukka back”. That’s when my head fell off.

MadScientist72

Well, Tuukka is undefeated so far this season, while our other 3 goalies are winless.

imbiginjapan

Rask has looked good especially when you consider he’s been fighting an obvious injury. Twice he went down in clear pain but finished the games (and won).

I don’t think that’s fair to Khudobin at all. He’s been better than the other backups we’ve had the past couple years.

Colin Miller, I’m fine with. But he needs work. If guys are going to sit I’d rather see him play than McQuaid whose ceiling is falling on his own head.

Yeah basically the middle of the team has been melty soft-serve ice cream, and teams are pounding Marchand into dust because they don’t need to worry about depth threats.

Couple generally means 2 (CJ30 was 3 years ago)- and Dobie hasn’t been worse than Sveddy or Gus I think- he’s the closest thing to having been ‘in’ that Habs game we had going

imbiginjapan

Oh god Svedberg was terrible! He batted the puck around like a kitten on caffeine.

DrHandgrenaid

So with the Ducks having signed Lindholm to a $5.25 million for 6 years contract, the Ducks are $1.3 million over the cap and have no choice but to make a trade between now and 5 PM tomorrow to be Cap compliant. World seems to think Fowler will be in play. I’m not overly interested in Fowler, but now that the Ducks have no choice but to sell RIGHT THE FUCK NOW, literally anyone in talks with Bob Murray has all of the leverage

MadScientist72

MadScientist72

According to thehockeywriters.com, the Ducks got back under the cap by putting Simon Despres & Nate Thompson on LTIR

DrHandgrenaid

Only buys them time, it solves nothing. Especially if they get better.

But time is a valuable commodity when making deals. It means they don’t have “sell RIGHT THE FUCK NOW”, just pretty fucking soon.

Ugh! I always get that wrong! It’s the Fowler that needs Ducks, not the other way around.

The collective interest might actually force one team to offer a decent return.

MadScientist72

Their cap situation might prevent them from accepting a decent return.

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

Depends. I’ve read that Murray doesn’t want to trade Fowler if he can avoid it (although hes got expansion issue on the back end- required to protect Bieksa, presumably would like to avoid losing as many of Lindhol-Vatanen-Fowler-Manson as possible). If someone comes along offering to take one of his other cap problems off his hands- Bernier, Stoner, etc, I bet Murray lets them go for very, very little (Stoner is a more expensive mcQuaid though, so god no)

Satan81
Admin

Especially combined with the absurdly high asking prices for defensemen lately. I’d expect a normal-ish return for Fowler. As much as I’m also not super hot on Fowler, he might be what the B’s need.

Long-Winded Striped Mofo

Long-Winded Striped Mofo

I would take Fowler anytime. He has improved greatly the last two years.

DrHandgrenaid
Editor

a multi-million LHD is not what I would chase right now first choice, but if the price is reasonable. and picking up a D with low term is fine- we only have 2 defensemen that we really really need to (or are required to) protect from expansion right now in Z and Krug

Satan81
Admin

Agreed. Not my first choice, either, but if the price is right he could help us out a lot.

Satan81

Holy mackerel. That’s gonna be quite a kettle of vultures circling around the Ducks.

This could be how we find out if Tuukka is down long term- Bernier. Ugh.

NO.

Probably true, hopefully not needed.

If Tuukka is out long term, hes better than Pavelec, and Anaheim would give him away cheap to a not-Kings team.

Fuck I hope Tuukka isn’t out long term

Boston’s David Pastrnak will have a hearing tomorrow for charging/ illegal check to the head on NY Rangers’ Dan Girardi.

carvinbass18

I said this last night during the game thread, it looks like Pasta was deciding between go up for a jump ball for the puck or wait it out & shoulder to chest Girardi when he made contact with the puck to strip it from him & ended up doing a bit of both

phonymahoney
Editor

The more I watch this play, the more legal I think it is. Minor penalty at most.

DrHandgrenaid

Girardi facing him square on has to be a factor in the decision

Thetallest81
Member
Thetallest81

Principal point of contact was the chest. Anyone who says otherwise isn’t watching it at full speed.

leading foot is on the ice, the shoulder is down and the head snaps forward onto the shoulder due to momentum change, as he follows through with the hit the shoulder elevates pushing the head back making it look like a head hit when 90% of the energy transfer is to the breast bone.

If they do anything more than talk to him and go, hey…when making this hit we prefer “Such and such,” you ave no previous history just be careful going forward….i will be shocked.

I agree but with the way this season is going he’ll probably have to sit.

Launch Jimmy Hayes into the sun.

Launch Colin Miller into the sun.

Today in hockey terminology: double flamingo

Yes, lets fire our best possession defenseman (by a lot) and with a comically low sub- 900 PDO into the sun, thats a fucking sane idea.

Satan81
Admin

I’m gonna go with the “watch the game” test and say, “He contributes nothing.” I’m sick of how many times he’s caught out of position. The Liles-Chiller pairing has been flat-out atrocious.

IntentionallyWidenberg
Admin

I’ve gotta agree with this. He gets caught out of position with startling regularity. He uses his speed to recover from this, so it often works out in the end, but there are going to be teams (Rags come to mind) against which that will not work, and he’s gonna get torched with regularity against those teams.

He’s gotta get his eyes open & read the situations better – he can and should be a better player.

Their goals-for percentage is indistinguishable from Krug’s. Chiller is no more a problem than any defensemen not named Chara or Carlo has been, and arguably less so than at least a few.
