DoPS Has Spoken: The Pastrnak Verdict

David Pastrnak is not a good boy.

The NHL’s Department of rule misinterpretations and questionable decisions Player Safety has handed the Bruins’ very scary 20 year old Czech right wing a two game suspension for a check he made on Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi Wednesday night in New York.

The league has doled out a completely reasonable and not at all overzealous punishment for the menacing Pastrnak, and I, for one, applaud them. It was a completely fair and just decision on their part.

Video of the vicious incident can be seen here. Please view at your discretion.

Good move, Department of Player Safety. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. We salute you.

As I said in the MFA, the view from the Rangers end is pretty damning.

I don’t see anything damning there. After the initial shoulder to shoulder/chest contact, Pasta’s elbow seems to come up and might have caught Girardi on the chin. That’s the only potential penalty I see there.

I’ve supported suspensions against the Bruins before. I just don’t see a suspension here. I don’t, I see two mins

Same here on all counts.

It’s a borderline minor, at most.

His chest was hit, you must acquit!

We need our resident ref to weigh in here. He should do regular post called “Get To Know A Penalty!”

No history and borderline at best. Principal point of contact is NOT the head. How is this fair?

He charge, lunged and hit a player’s head. Two games is fair.

He’s playing a puck that’s in the air and has no history of doing anything like this. Anything over a fine is definitely overkill. I’ve never heard of a penalty for lunging. Is that a major or a minor?

Leaving your feet? Yeah. Falls under charging.

Both his feet did not leave the ice though.

It looks like he did.

Not until after he made contact.

You can see that most clearly in the replay from 1:00-1:03. When he his Girardi, his leading leg is still on the ice. At that point, his body’s forward movement stops but his foot keeps going, forcing it up off the ice.

When did I say there was no charging? And, one foot is on the ice until contact is made. That’s not leaving one’s feet.

To me, it looks like he left both feet prior to contact.

That pic is a good shot of Pasta’s leading foot still down on the ice.

Also, it’s very clear in that picture that it’s shoulder/chest or shoulder/shoulder contact.

That poor man! Dan Girardi got a bloody nose and..
Oh, wait, that didn’t happen?

Yeah, well Pastrnak clearly targeted the head, and…
Oh, wait, he didn’t?

Yeah, but the primary point of contact was…
the chest.

Okay, but he must have leapt into the hit, his skates totally…
well, one of his skates was still in contact with the ice…

I mean, seriously. At some point one must accept that this is a contact sport and players will get bumped around a bit. Unfortunately, I can’t get the stupid video to play to see what DOPS are actually whining about.

It’s his reputation! This is what happens after you forget your practice equipment and your passport, and you save escort service Twitter accounts on your own page, and bat with no shoes on. His lack of discipline and forgetfulness caught up with him.

FOR SHAME DAVID.

FOR SHAME.

On top of the points you make, the puck was way up in the air and Pasta’s attention was clearly focused on that, which is why he went in a little bit high. Clearly no intent.

But they seem to have ignored that as well.

Seriously. This could have been a great teaching moment by the DoPS & they cocked it up
