Morning Free Association: November 14

Yay! The Bruins continue their winning ways on back-to-backs on the road. Next up is Minnesota on Thursday night.

On the Boston Bruins official website, Caryn Switaj wrote a Sunday long-read on the relationship between Zdeno Chara and first-year defenseman Brandon Carlo. It’s a great piece for gaining some insight into how it feels to be a young NHL player, how veteran players can and do perceive younger players, and what has changed in the league in the past twenty years.

Ooof…B2B favorite Dennis Seidenberg out with a broken jaw:

The bad news keeps getting worse for the Islanders.

Sucks for Seids. I was happy to see him playing and playing well. The good news is you can stay in shape while your jaw heals. Actually, Seids will be doing the sucking for awhile. Eating through a straw is not fun.

Good morning, friends!

I had a ton of fun recording the Hate-Read with Phony and VA (and our other contributor, too!) yesterday. I’m excited for you all to listen to it!

Last night’s game, while a sack of blue-pucks (haha), was a good one. This team is fun to watch again. I’m sad I’ll be talking about the road to Civil War (not the marvel variety) on Thursday and not watching the game.

Coffee and grading on tap.

Good Morning All!
The wireless router has been unfriended this morning! I am wired to the modem! How archaic.

Had to listen to the game on radio last night, because blackout restrictions. @^*(*$#^#^%%!

The Bs sounded good! I might have been a little cray cray if I was watching.

Nice quiet weekend with Jo. A couple rounds of disc golf – why do we play this sport we suck at???? (Although I beat my kid by one stroke, maybe I’ll play one more week).

The bulletless bullet points roll on!

Tip o the cap to Revenge is Switaj. Well played week.

Coffee with a modicum (I fucking LOVE that word! – a small portion, a limited quantity [so open to interpretation!] ) of bourbon.

Okay, I’m not sure why the last line is also tied to the same link, but I’m a neophyte and I don’t care. That sounds like a great song title – “Oh, I’m a neophyte and I don’t care -‘ feel free, my friends, feel free.

Morning!

How was the score of that game not 7-0 by the end of it. Wow.

Is it 4 yet?

Varlamov had a heck of a night for the Avs. I was worried he’d end up stealing it for them, but Tuukka shut the door.

Hello all.

Unexpectedly got to see all the last three Bs games.

Tuukka’s doing great but in fairness the defence isn’t giving him too many scares, they’re looking solid.

Last night’s game very encouraging considering it was not only the second half of a back-to-back but the fifth in seven nights and at altitude!

Why do refs hate the Bs? Or maybe they think their helping more by not giving us power plays smile

The team defense is doing a great job making Tuukka’s life as dull as possible. He’s only seeing ~20 shots per game. And he’s been looking great too – at times he looks like Holtby did last season, or Price the season before that. I’m waiting to see how long he can sustain it.

During the Sabre’s game, I think the B’s got more than their share of power plays — it was very satisfying because of it’s rarity. The last two games they seemed to get the short end of the stick. But yeah, I’m kind of fearful of the B’s “power play”. It looked better once Backes came back into the lineup, but so fragile.

Even the power play has looked better lately. All that’s left is to start winning with a backup in net. I’m not disparaging either of them (I actually quite like them both) but two goals a night is not going to cut it with Zane or Dobby in net.

Morning all,

Its a good day to hate the habs!

Busy weekend..not quite sure where it went….but alas …its monday again and work is being worky.

General thoughts:
Pasta is great. They should sign him now. like…now now.
Backes will some day be a coach with that vocabulary and smarts. Ive never heard a hockey player (or any sports player for that matter) continually give that kind of detail in a sideline report.
Tuukka is on fire right now thank goodness.
That 4th line is fantastic.
I cant wait for pie and gobble gobble.

I’ve always liked Dominic Moore and the energy he brings. If you are on the ice with him, I think you would have to me motivated by him.

The fourth line is a completely different fourth line than two weeks ago and is still impressing. It feels very weird to see a Bruins team working on multiple levels. It feels too good to be true.

The problem with Backes coaching is that all the players who came up through the juniors will be like,
“umm… what?”

  • Our hockey team is fun to watch, yo.
  • Ben and I had an interesting discussion last night about one young Douglas Hamilton. It seems you do NOT want him to teach you how to Dougie. Thinking Big Z, or Claude, or the system made him look really good ’round these parts.
  • I have this weird work cultural exchange thing happening today. I actually think my buddy is too busy to deal with his new rep today, so I’m babysitting. Whatevs, don’t care.
  • Coffee?

    Assorted thoughts on Dougie:

    – Most of us (including me) thought he was our next franchise defensemen and were willing to throw $6.5mil/year at him. It wasn’t just about potential – we liked what he was doing in Boston right then and there. Clearly something is up with him and we could have been wrong about him all along.
    – Was Claude’s system and pairing Dougie with Chara masking Dougie’s problems?
    – I vaguely remember fancy stats people trying to show that Dougie was improving Z’s numbers and not the other way around, but if that’s the case, why is the defense so bad in Calgary? Shouldn’t he be improving it?
    – Is the defense so bad in Calgary? They have Brodie and Giordano! Their goaltending has been awful. Their forward depth is poor, so perhaps that’s contributing to their problems (not keeping the puck in the offensive zone, not keeping teams back on their heels through goal-scoring, not being responsible enough in their own end).
    – Is it the coaching in Calgary? Glen Gulutzan isn’t impressing anyone out there. Maybe Dougie is the kind of player who needs a solid system to stick with and is kinda lost without one. If he is, that doesn’t speak well of his hockey IQ.
    – Offensively at least, Dougie’s been good. He had 43 points last year (12 G, 31A) in a full 82 games, though he was a -13 on the season. This year he has 6 points (2G, 4A) in 16 games, and is a -9. Not that one should read much into plus-minus, but -9 in 16 games is really awful for someone getting bottom pair minutes.
    – Did I mention bottom pair minutes? He was 5th in ice time for the Flames last season and that’s continued into this season. His cap hit is $5.5mil/yr. Woof.
    – Overall, I’m getting the impression that Dougie’s a decent-to-good offensive defenseman with poor defensive IQ and not much willingness to play physically. Get a good coach and pair him with a defense-first partner and you can make use of him. However, that makes his upside in the 2nd-pair range and nowhere near franchise d-man. Flames fans are getting Bouwmeester flashbacks.
    – Check out the Rangers’ goals from the other night. Watch for #27 in highlights 1, 3, and 4.

    http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpost.php?p=6004725&postcount=3

    – Goal #1: Dougie moves to cover a player who’s already covered. Non-existent gap control on the (admittedly really fast) Grabner.
    – Goal #3: Dougie skates to the left faceoff circle to cover…er…someone who’s already covered? Slow getting back to the right side, far too late to challenge McDonagh.
    – Goal #4: Completely ineffectual check on Zuccarello in the corner. Skates to the front of the net, thinks about covering Zucc, then thinks about covering Buchnevich, ends up covering nobody. Goal.

    – Who did the Bruins get with the picks we got for Dougie? Senyshyn, Forsbacka-Karlsson, and Lauzon.
    – omg Donny’s an idiot for passing on Barzal and Connor. That Connor kid must be lighting it up for Winnipeg. Oh…uh…I see: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=160546 #myotherfavoritenarrative

The talent was there with Dougie. It was evident in junior. He was head and shoulders above the rest. Maybe the head got too high above everything else. All the tools and not enough head to handle it.

It’s a little concerning if it was Z / Claude that made Hamilton look good considering the youth we have being taught by Chara right now. Maybe Calgary is just poorly using Hamilton all together (should be playing top pairing but he’s been bad so why play him and #CarlShrug), but then when Chara went down w/ Hamilton still in the line up he became our #1 clearly so… I have no idea.

In which case, maybe it’s the coaching and/or system, and not Chara that made Hamilton look good.

Exactly. Makes me wonder, is Hamilton a good defenseman on a bad team, or an average defenseman playing in a good system.

    IntentionallyWidenberg
    Admin

Hamilton got a lot of help from the forwards (system), but he also played a lot more conservatively when Chara was out. He really needs to do that if he wants to be a top-4 D in this league.

I was never big on Dougie – lots of fans were all excited about him when he was coming into the lineup, but I’ve never given two craps about draft position and just looked at his game. I always saw a kid who made dumb pinches, would take the shot as soon as he got into the zone, resulting in an immediate save and turnover leading to the opposing rush, and in spite of having good size, he avoided physical play more than any player I’ve seen.
One time he took a stupid penalty, and at the end of 2 minutes played the puck before leaving the penalty box. Holy shit, I wanted to set the kid on fire.
At no time did I think he could be a #1D, but I did think he could be a Kris Letang sort of player who could bounce around between #2-#4.
