Morning Free Association: December 20

Frank Vatrano has been called back up to the big club.

And right away he was put into action!

Well, yes, he did that as well. But, I’m talking about practice. Claude is being non-committal about the return of Frankie V. tomorrow night.

But Frankie seems confident that he battled well today.

With Pasta out of the lineup, we could use another young gun to score some goals. Let’s all hope that he makes his season debut tonight versus the Isles.

So, Im going to see Pavel Datsyuk and Kovalchuk on January 5th. Its going to be cooooooold in Helsinki.

I also stopped being able to log in to chowder months ago because of the site’s new software my computer cant read. Same thing happened here a bit ago so thats why you havent seen me. Its my own fault, Im too thrifty for my own good and wont buy a new computer good enough to run a browser latter than like 2010 but it does suck so many site just dont work anymore.

Anyway, still trying my best to keep up with the bruins and the b2b league. Keep cool guys

Oh, and awesome that you’re going to Helsinki! Two pieces of advice:

– Buy a bottle of anything from your airport’s duty free shop and drink that in Finland. You’ll save a TON of money that way due to Finland’s taxation of alcohol.

– Take the ferry over to Tallinn, Estonia for a day trip. Totally worth it.

I won’t have time to do Estonia but I’ll put it on a to-do list. Keep giving me advice. I LOVED the capital of Slovenia that I can not spell (Lbjunauan?). Your recommendations have been great so far

SKA v Jokerit? SKA also has a very decent young goalie.

Yup. I’ve never seen Pavel live but I saw Kovy in Atlanta once. So when I picked a game months ago that had to be it.

Sounds fun. I always wonder about how easy going to some place like Finland would be due to language issues, though I believe they have loads of English-speakers there (and lets face it – if you’re a Finn, you’d better learn a foreign language if you ever want to have a warm vacation. Lord knows that no one else is learning Finnish voluntarily)

oh yeah, it’s no problem in tons of countries. France and Italy are the ones more stubborn about their language being used there. In Italy it depends on region if they all speak english or none do. France speaks English but just won’t. About 10 other places Ive been speak enlgish perfectly and are pretty welcoming. Belgium, Germany, Czech, and Switzerland all speak English or French right when they see me. They know Im not a local. For some reason I look French though I guess.

France speaks English but just won’t.

Depends on where you are in France. In Paris, yeah. In Normandy, the French Riviera, and Alsace, I found that if you started off by speaking French, even poorly, they appreciated it a lot and then would immediately switch to English.

When I first visited Paris, I had a friend translate “I am a stupid American tourist. Please help.” into French. I wrote that on an index card and showed it to every shopkeeper when I needed something. It worked like a charm. smile

haha I went to Paris when I was 12 and again this year. I learned a couple phrases but they still scoffed. I tried to be polite and they still were not helpful (not mean, but not helpful). I don’t blame them but I dp try to be a cool tourist. I engage in the culture, do what they do, try the lifestyle but when I was in northeast France and Paris (where the Germans told me they are the meanest) they were pretty unhelpful. In Southeast France they were nice but didn’t speak English so we spoke Italian to communicate. I don’t hate the French but they as far as Europeans go….they help you the least. Its cool, I’ve learned to go with the flow and roll with the punches here and there. No complaints

The London Bear

That’s been my experience in most of Europe- any attempt at the language, no matter how feeble, is hugely appreciated. Probably because they’re so used to obnoxious English tourists!

Well, I speak Italian pretty well now. I’ve been all over Italy and only speak Italian. Other countries are harder though. Germany and Switzerland were very nice to me and I met some good people. LOVED Oktoberfest. Still talk to some guys I met there. Some are coming to Italy soon and were meeting up in Rome, Im going to be the tour guide. Eastern Europe can be tough but I try to learn some phrases. As a whole they are very nice though

Ah, so that’s where we Americans learned it from!

I’ve been fortunate in the set of countries I’ve visited, to have had few language issues. Large cities in Israel speak English (it is their 3rd language). Large cities in Germany speak English, and in smaller places, GH & I could operate in German with some difficulty. I’ve had the most difficulty in Quebec — Montreal speaks English, but is only willing to in alternate years.

I actually might move to NH after this whole Eurotrip. I think I’m staying longer, August when everyone goes on vacation or this summer. If I go to NH and not NC, I will go see a Bruins game in Montreal. Never been to Quebec. Ontario is awesome though

The last time I was in Montreal I thought the bartender asked me if I wanted a coaster. I ended up with a dish of Cole slaw.

I’m filling in for band in a week and half. The bass parts have lots of fast walking bass lines. It’s something I haven’t had to play in a while. I spent three hours last night playing bass.

I also get two bass solos, and I’m not the kind of guy who can solo on the fly, so I spent most of that time composing what I want to play.

This is my point. I had a lot of fun last night.

Thanks for reminding me – need to set my lineup. You inflicted my first defeat for 5 weeks last week!

Wonder if this will be a double length week due to the holiday.

Have a great time at the game!

When his grades weren’t NCAA ready, he played with the Junior Bruins. Had them at South Kent, Ct. He stood out from the crowd. A crowd that included Anthony Florentino of Providence (5th round pick of Buffalo 2013).

If we’re stuck without Pasta tonight, hopefully Frankie V will be in the mix, and add a little excitement back.
Of course I didn’t see his last P-Bruins game, so I have no idea of his current level of play after being out for so long.

DrHandgrenaid

He scored in that game. so 2 goals in 2 games back with PVD

    Good Morning!

    -It’s much too cold.
-I saw 0° (or lower) again on the outdoor thermometer in my house. In December. What the hell?
-Our dryer which stopped working, started working again last night. The repair guy was coming today. Clearly my cursing at it fixed the issue.
-Wife had a GI bug and a minor freak out yesterday. Ended up with an unexpected most-of-the-day off yesterday taking her to the doctor and then taking care of her when we got home.
-I still have Christmas shopping to finish. Whoops.
-Tonight we are having people over and making perogies (approx. all of them) and sausage. I’m already sick of rolling out dough and I haven’t even started. Made 10lbs of mashed taters yesterday so I’m sick of them, too. WORTH IT.

Have fun at the game tonight guys!

Indeed. Couple weeks ago I was asked to repair a radiator. Pulled the handle off my toolbox getting it out the cupboard – much cursing. Got upstairs – radiator was red hot!
