Morning Free Association: January 19

Hey, Bruins, when you decide to only play one real period of the game, take off one entirely, and most of the third how exactly did you think you were going to win the game?

First:

Frank Vatrano scored at 44 seconds. Detroit challenges whether or not Marchand had control of the puck while transporting it into Detroits zone. Detroit lost challenge.

On the penalty kill, Brandon Carlo scores a shirt-handed goal at 2:27.

Frank Vatrano is 2/3 of the way to a hat trick when he scores again at 8:50. Jared Coreau goes to the bench, Mrazek comes in to the game.

Then Detroit had to ruin it. At 15:32 Dylan Larkin scores

Patrice Bergeron tries to make up for it by scoring a PPG at 19:01 .

Bruins lead 4-1 after taking 19 shots to Red Wings’ 7.

Second:

This is the period in which it all falls apart. At 4:21 Xavier Ouellet scores for the Red Wings. Just over 5 1/2 minutes later, at 9:54  Andreas Anathasiou lights the lamp for Detroit. After two unanswered goals, you would think the Bruins would shift into gear. Nope.  Tatar ties it on a breakaway when Carlo wiped out along the boards. Tuukka thought he sealed the five-hole, but the puck slipped through.

Adam McQuaid scores his first of the year to take lead back.

Bruins only had 4 SOG for the period, to the Wings’ 8.

Third:

Lots of back and forth but the Bruins aren’t quite playing well. With 2:40 to go, David Pastrnak gets a roughing penalty for pulling on Justin Abdelkader while Anthony Mantha pulled him, resulting in  Abdelkader on the ice.

Lucky that the penalty was killed off.

OT And SO

Neither team scores 3-on-3. Frank Vatrano was called for holding with 12 seconds to go. Bruins kill it off with Zdeno Chara’s first appearance during the five-minute interval.

The shootout happens. Brad Marchand nets one for the Bruins, but the Red Wings get two.

Even though the team walks away with the loser point, it’s very likely that a coaching change will be happening in the near future. The team continued its inconsistent play in a game that they dominated in the first period. It’s the other two that they need work on.

Thing is… who replaces Claude? Maybe Sweeney takes a page from Lou Lamoriello’s book and comes down from the front office to step behind the bench.

I was thinking the same. We may be cursed forever. Can we hire Recchi?

This team needs a Recchi.

I’m guessing Cassidy just becomes interim HC, finishes out the year & then they look elsewhere or hire a new assistant.

Which is why i don’t understand because Cassidy runs the same freaking system.

I assume Patrick Roy is still available

One must assume that either Cassidy or Sacco would get the nod if Claude gets the Sacc. Why else have 2 coaches on staff with HC experience?

Clearly the guy isn’t good.

Loved that between the legs goal, though

The thing that’s stuck in my craw right now: with the past three games being against PHI, NYI, and DET, why didn’t McIntyre start any of them? Tuukka really needs a break.

I’m a week into teach online, and I’m already not a fan.

But that’s the future of the industry. sad

As the teacher, what don’t you like about it?

Good morning, friends.

I didn’t watch the game last night (NBCSN means no watching for me), but it looks like I missed a massive disappointment.

I wish this team would figure itself out. I’ve got a feeling something drastic is going to happen when (if) they miss the playoffs again, and it makes me sad.

I think we should note that these are the dog days of the NHL schedule. I can tell you that at this time of year, players are tired, they have light deprivation, the fatigue of winter, just like everyone else. Their schedule is much more demanding than ours – even those of us with kids. I can tell you from reffing, it’s hard to keep your head in it all the time. Even for all the money they make. If they can get to the playoffs…..
That may be tough to do in itself as other teams have games in hand out the ass!

I can’t even figure out when other teams will catch up. It seems like Boston is on pace for a 120 game season.

I think next month is when we will see everything shake out. Bruins have a four day break 2/5-2/8 and then their bye week is 2/13-2/18.

A fucking bye week! Is this the NFL? Maybe it will help this team.

Every team gets a bye week this season because of the World Cup of Hockey.

Fat lot of good it’s doing.

Yeah, it’s really not working in the Bruins’ favor. You know what else isn’t working in their favor? LOSING GAMES WHEN YOU HAD A 4-1 LEAD!

Yeah, that “We’ve got a 4-1 lead & it’s only the 1st intermission… we’ve got this in the bag” attitude – followed by not giving 2 fucks for the rest of the game – just doesn’t fly.

Haha, I can see this is going to take a while to get out of your system smile

IT WAS 4-1! smile It’s been a stressful few weeks at work so the Bruins have become my venting mechanism. smile
