Morning Free Association: January 23

It is now a four-game losing streak. Sure they got a point out of Detroit, but they still lost the game.

On Friday night, The Bruins played a good game against the Blackhawks but came up short, losing 1-0. After the game, Bruins head coach Claude Julien spoke with the media briefly, opting to leave after CSNNE beat reporter Joe Haggerty decided to ask a question that only a jackass would pose: whether or not Julien was concerned about his job security. Claude curtly responded that he wasn’t a shock journalist and declined to answer the question, abruptly ending his time with the media. Nice job, bud.

Honestly, I wanted to reach through the radio and strangle the idiot myself. After a tough loss, in which the team actually played well, to ask that seemed ill-timed at best and lazy at worst. Regardless of how you feel about the validity of the question, the timing was off.

Anyway, Claude released a statement about it the next day:

Let’s skip to Sunday. It was kind of a weird game with uncooperative ice that needed Extreme Makeover: Ice Rink Edition, an early first intermission, and a small break before the second period after playing the remaining time of the first. The Penguins had a lead of 2 goals when David Krejci scored, but that was as good as it got.

Starting netminder Tuukka Rask left the game in the second period with a vision problem, which was later clarified by the Globe’s Fluto Shinzawa.

Backup goaltender Zane McIntyre came in and the team gradually collapsed around him, 5-1, after allowing three unanswered goals in the third period.

It’s hard to believe that Claude Julien will retain his job after this. It’s hard to think that he believes in his job security after this game.

I’ve been wondering if they would spend some more time doing that. It really seems as if NHL teams do surprisingly little of that.

I was wondering if they were having a ‘players-only meeting’. It bothers me that we hear lip-service from players & Claude after a bad loss, but after a close loss, they’re all like ‘we did some good things’, ‘good things will come’, ‘deserved a better fate’…

They’ve not put out a lot of 60-minute efforts all year. That’s something they should be angry about, and should be on the lookout for during games. Maybe now they’re finally hitting rock bottom, and will bounce back a little?

Hi everyone.

  • I have zero to say about this team right now. I am mad at it and giving it the silent treatment.
  • Be on the lookout for BoT this week as it will be a fun one to listen to
  • Yay Pats!
  • Went to a friends daughter’s 1st birthday party Saturday. I’ve been to a few of them now, and other than it being for the parents as a memory, I do not understand the point. The child is always overwhelmed with so many people coming up to it to say happy birthday or what not & the parents stress out trying to make everything “perfect”. That being said, Em did the cake / cupcake platter and just absolutely nailed it.
  • Been waiting for parts from the stockroom for almost 2 hours now. This is not a successful way to run a business

My friends didn’t have a birthday party for their son’s first birthday for this exact reason. They didn’t see the point of going through all that stress for something he wasn’t going to remember anyway.

This is a new role for me – being conservative. It only applies to my hockey team!!!
This team is rebuilding. Do we, the fans, want the team to sacrifice the future to be in the playoffs right now? I think the Bs can make the playoffs. If they don’t….???? The plan rolls on. The D gets younger (eventually) and something good happens before Bergy, Krejci, and Marchand head for the old folks home. B Rad is younger than the “old guys”, but that is the plan, right Sweens?

    Hi!

Not much doubt the future looks brighter than the present, but it would be nice for some of the youngsters to get some experience of playoff hockey.

As far as the current situation goes, I’d say do nothing now. Give McIntyre a few starts. Take any points we score between now and the AS Game as a bonus, then regroup and try to put together a run of wins afterwards.

If the Bs form is just as bad in the ten games after the AS break then look at making some changes.

Tiredness does seem to be a major factor at the moment and in a league where the teams are so closely matched that can make a huge difference.

A part of me wants them to be sellers anyway. Would love to see Spoons moved for ’17 picks, McQuaid or Miller moved for space to bring in McAvoy. Would love them to send Schaller down & bring up DeBrusk or Cehlarik. Shake it up

    phonymahoney

I think you move McQuaid over Miller (can’t believe I just said that), and I think Schaller has been one of the more consistent players in the lineup. IMO he shouldn’t go down to Providence.

    carvinbass18
    Editor
    carvinbass18

Last year saying McQauid over Miller would have been blasphemy haha. I agree on Schaller, he’s been consistent, constantly grinding, but I don’t think he has the skill to play 2nd line. Sending Schaller down is a hell of a wake up call (hopefully) doesn’t need waivers (maybe?) & shakes up the line up in a big way. Hopefully that means putting Beleskey on Krecji’s left but who knows too?

    Thetallest81

I still say Beleskey – Spooner – Pasta third line would be stupid fun.

    Vitrano – DK- Backes
    Marchand – Bergy – Hayes
    Beleskey -Spoon – Pasta
    Moore – Shaller – Czar – Nash- whatever…it works.

    carvinbass18

    Why Hayes?

    Thetallest81
    Member

Because if Bergy-Marshy cant get him some tip ins no one can, I would say put DK on with Vitrano and Hayes but hes being a lil bitch about who his line is….but DK may be able to slow down the pace long enough to allow Hayes to get his butt in front of the net…so if you wanna swap out him and Backes id be ok with that…but i think for Hayes confidence bergy and marshy would do him wonders.

No. We knew this was going to be a bridge year of sorts. There’s no reason to mortgage the future when we aren’t winning the Cup this year anyway. Is a playoff run that important when you know you’re not really going to get past the first, or if you’re lucky, the second round?

We have all kinds of prospects that are pretty close, there’s no reason to do anything stupid to appease casual fans and loudmouths on twitter.

I think the problem is that we dont know if the executive office is thinking logically or irrational.

A smart person looks at our D prospect pool and thinks about what our current core is and what our needs are to complement the strengths of the players we have.

An irrational person would say the core is rotten and something is wrong and we need to start over and make a firesale, trade prospects for bargain talent that is out there on bad teams and rebuild the core.

I think Sweeney knows what the untouchables are. I think he hopes the team he put together has what it takes to make the playoffs and give some confidence to the team that just cant find any rhythm once so ever. But i think he is smart enough to recognise he still has some work to do and it may have to get worse to get better. We have a lot to look forward to internally, but none have been tested on the NHL level yet. I trust Cassidy knows his players potential in the system and what is needed to get them ready.

Exactly this. The only people talking are the fans and media. Sweeney / Cam haven’t said 2 words regarding the team other than vague stuff about Claude. Is their silence because of hard work creating deals or is it because nothing is going to be done?

Yeah. Turned that game off as soon as the 4th goal was scored. Decided listening to music would make house cleaning more fun than that tire fire.

I wanted to watch the 3rd. That means going up to the main house where there is cable. Jo decided to stay in bed (we were there all day). By the time I got to the telly it was 3-1. Seconds later – 4-1. I saw the 5th goal just before I shut the set off. When Jo heard the door open on my return, she started laughing her ass off. She had been listening on her phone and knew I’d be coming through the door any second. All you can do is laugh it off.
