Morning Free Association: February 1

The Bruins are riding a three-game win streak after winning against Tampa Bay last night. Let’s break it down.

First Period:

“The Bruins have had some sketchy moments in their own zone.”- Jack Edwards, just before the halfway mark of the period

Alex Killorn and Jimmy Hayes had a sort of disagreement over something and went for it at 10:14. The showdown seemed to be more a wrestling match than a true fight. Twitter user Dafoomie posted it to YouTube for your, er, enjoyment.

Soon after young Brandon Carlo joined Hayes in the box for Hi-Sticking at 10:19. This gave Tampa Bay the Power Play. Hey, that rhymes!

It wouldn’t matter because (spoiler) no one scored this period.

Wait, there was one close moment for the Bruins. Colin Miller made a save scraping the puck out off the line around 13 minute mark.

Second Period:

At 8:41,  Alex Killorn scored the first goal of the game.

You would think that Brad Marchand had learned a lesson last week when he by dodged a bullet paying a steep fine rather than getting suspended.

He managed to make another dangerous trip this time against Anton Stralman that went uncalled against Boston. Darren Dreger later would suggest that DoPS would take a look at this.

Stralman would go on to trip David Pastrnak behind the goal and get called for it soon after.

During the resulting 4-on-4 play, Patrice Bergeron brought his A-game and scored the tying goal.

Within the final second of the second period, David Krejci scored the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1.

Third Period:

Stupid Alex Killorn scored again make it all tied up
.

Leave it to the captain, Zdeno Chara, to make things right. Chara slapped one on Ben Bishop, it bounced off the pipe and into the goal.

Frank Vatrano got in on the scoring action with a PPG at 12:23.

Bishop left the net with under three minutes to go. With the extra skater, the Bolts were able to score on a shot by Brayden Point.

What followed was an exciting last minute of play full of turnovers, shots directed at the empty net, and diving stops. But the Bruins were able to keep the puck out of their zone for the most part after the Point goal and skate off with the win.

  • Holy crap, it’s February already!
  • I am a total grouchbag today.

  • I had some catching up to do this morning. Of course it’s not done yet, because somebody called out.
  • comment image

  • So, I have two people who are always at work, and two people who are always calling out. Wicked annoying.
  • The hockey game was well played. And it got really fun. That was nice.
  • Hopefully tonight goes well against the Caps.
  • I wonder what the goaltending situation will be. I know the schedule is light this month, but we really need to get Tuukka a night or two off… and, like, win those games. I don’t only blame the backups. The team falls apart when they’re in net, I don’t get it.

  • I think I pulled both my hamstrings. All I know is that it takes a LOT to straighten my legs right now.
  • that’s all I’ve got right now.

    Hello people,

Wow, that was a fun game last night. Not the most impressive performance but we’ll take a third win in a row (first time since December 6).

I thought Marchy was unbelievable last night, though I somehow missed the dumb play some of you are talking about in the comments. His control and playmaking was top-notch tho.

Zee had an off-night (apart from the goal) but I guess everyone has off-nights. At least he didn’t end up a minus for the first time in, what four games? Five?

You know what’s not fun? Emergency dental work! Woke up feeling like there was a car battery attached to my face! Luckily I was able to see a dentist midmorning and he started what will be a four-visit process to rebuild one of my teeth.

Ho hum. Worse things happen at sea.

    On tap – painkillers!

So, I’m studying the Massachusetts building code. The worst read I’ve encountered for some time. Now I remember why I dropped out of college! I’m going after a home improvement contractor certificate. Massachusetts doesn’t like homeowners doing their own thing. I know one thing. The current building inspector has never seen this house. When she shows up I’m going to be like “That’s the way it was when we bought it.” Preexisting violations of code are often acceptable to building inspectors.

Screw the NH code. I have a bathroom with neither. LIVE FREE OR DIE, BITCHES!

    I hate goddamned bathroom vents!

Did find out it is code that all external doors need an exterior light next to them. Surprised by that one since I don’t see the need for one on my cellar backdoor that faces the woods and highway

whats fun is finding out that most vents upstairs just vent directly into the attic. So they have just been blowing the moisture directly into your insulation instead of venting outside.

Very common! That won’t be happening at this house.

Morning all. Had a weird dream that I was in some Westworld type shit and was running away. Love waking up more tired than I when went to bed. Also weird because I never really got into Westworld. Found it rather dull so I gave up after a few episodes.

    good morning folks

  • Good win last night, even thought it was a little sloppy. Thought Chiller played a hell of a game.
  • Glad that the people we’ve ragged on all season did things. Krecji’s goal, Hayes’ fight. Continue to prove dumb jerks like me wrong!
  • back to work today. Minor dizziness still kicking around, but that might just be because of what I had to do this morning. #CarlShrug. I just want it to go away
  • Weird thing happened in on the way to work where I was listening to 100.1 & randomly it would cut over to 94.1. I’ve never seen (heard?) that happen before, have you ever heard of that??

listening to 100.1 & randomly it would cut over to 94.1.

Something very similar to that happened in the old episode of X-Files I watched last night…

    IntentionallyWidenberg

94.1 probably has some sloppy RF stuff going on. Lemme guess – you travel north to get to work? Vaguely in the direction of Franklin?
Radio transmitters have reflections on other frequencies that are supposed to be filtered below a certain level per FCC rules. (the frequencies will depend on the modulator design & frequencies in use.) If they screw up the filtering you can get a strongish signal in certain areas.

    carvinbass18

South, but yes, vaguely in the direction of Franklin. It’s weird though, only happens in the truck

I occasionally have some weird radio issues like that in my house. Usually, though, it’s on analog tuners, not digital ones like cars.

Warp in the time/space continuum. I’m trying to get to that alternate universe. I’m hoping I don’t find out that I actually have to work over there.

Hell of a play by Miller on that save. Nice to see from on of the less defensively gifted D.

The last three minutes was a disaster. Did not think highly of Z so easily icing the puck and they ended up paying for it.

Can’t believe the stupidity of the Marchand play. There is a legit argument it was incidental since his head never strays from looking down ice but even so, he has to know he will get zero benefit of the doubt…

    Thetallest81

I too was very confused by that icing. He had time and space to not react like that…did he just think it was a PP or something??? it was very odd. He made a lot of really odd game decisions that game.

    from Elliotte Friedman:

Hearing no discipline for Brad Marchand. Going towards puck, not seen as intentional like Kronwall play from last week.

    Very surprised by that tbh.

We all look at these plays a million times, in slow motion, pausing here and there. I’d like to think it was incidental, but I know too many players that are really, really good at this kind of shit. I might have played like this, a bit.

    IntentionallyWidenberg
    Admin

Exactly. A lot of guys who play on the edge practice making it look incidental. That time when James Neal kneed Marchand in the head, he made a point of staring forward once he got close to impact to provide plausible deniability.
I saw this as the same sort of thing.

Yea, any other Bruin I’d buy the incidental argument and I don’t think many would have even given it a second thought. But for Brad? Everything is scrutinized and rightly so…

    My observations from the game…

Chara made a whole bunch of really bad turn overs. and i mean direct passes to the other team…it was very odd to see him not making smart decisions with the puck.

Team seems to be exposed when forced to play man on man when a player is activated, the common theme this year seems to be blown coverage when someone runs a play to pull the puck behind the net to get both D-men involved and activate a player to get to the dots and create an opening….seems like bruins have a tendency to lose that coverage.
