Morning Free Association: February 3

Good morning, hope you all have had a restful evening and are gearing up for some good plans this weekend. I’m not doing a food pairing this morning, but thought it’d be good to do sort of a prospects round up. I’ve gone back through the last three draft years, and have left out all players currently playing for Boston or Providence.

So let’s start with the college kids.

NameSchoolDraft year | RoundPositionGoalsAssistsPoints
Charlie McAvoyBoston University2016 | 1Defense31215
Trent FredricUniversity of Wisconsin2016 | 1Center71118
Ryan LindgrenUniversity of Minnesota2016 | 2Defense145
Cam ClarkFerris State University2016 | 5Defense167
Jakob Forsbacka KarlssonBoston University2015 | 2Center101424
Cameron HughesUniversity of Wisconsin2015 | 6Center51520
Ryan DonatoHarvard University2014 | 2Center11920
Anders BjorkNotre Dame2014 | 5Center / Left Wing162238

Twenty seven points off the blueline, very encouraging. Anders Bjork (who I still can’t believe is an American. He’s like a reverse Sean Bergenheim in terms of name vs country) is still lighting the NCAA on fire, leading all Bruins collegiate prospects by a wide majority.

What about our friends to the north?

NameTeam | LeagueDraft year | RoundPositionGoalsAssistsPoints
Jakub ZborilSaint John Sea Dogs | QMJHL2015 | 1Defense61824
Zach SenyshynSoo Greyhounds | OHL2015 | 1Right Wing281341
Jeremy LauzonRouyn-Noranda Huskies | QMJHL2015 | 2Defense31114
Jesse GabriellePrince George Cougars | WHL2015Left Wing231942

No real surprises here as by this point we all know who the CHL guys are.

Last but not least are the European skaters.

NameTeam | CountryDraft year | RoundPositionGoalsAssistsPoints
Joona KoppanenIlvas U20 | Finland2016 | 5Left Wing / Center91726
Oskar SteenFärjestad BK | Sweden2016 | 6Center / Right Wing112
Emil JohanssonDjurgårdens IF | Sweden2014 | 7Defense6713

Very surprised to see the point totals of Johansson & Steen. A defenseman with 13 points isn’t unheard of by any means, but to be outscoring Steen by 11 points is something. Granted Johansson has 2 years more experience, but hey, we’re talking about a 6th and 7th rounder here.

What’s on tap for the weekend?

Heading to the pool tonight. I’ll be rolling that new(to me) kayak and seeing if I can do any stunts in it. Jo and friends will be there. Should be fun.

Morning folks. Made it to Friday. Today’s game is seeing if I can avoid being here tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Hi folks,

On the first of seven straight days in the office, but that will be immediately followed by eight days in Slovakia, so it’s bearable!

Had a great time yesterday at the karting track. They were going to film me for a promo video using their new camera drone, but it started to piss with rain just before I went on track and they didn’t want to risk their new toy. Never mind – it’s more fun driving in the wet.

Afterwards I watched the Caps game. Not much to say on that except this: When the Bs are playing an opponent they can’t realistically expect to beat on pure skill, they tend to do better by trying to turn the game into a rough-and-tumble, physical encounter. They did that in the win against the Habs and to a lesser extent when they beat the Pens. Although, with the Caps they would probably win a scrappy game as well, so…

Hope everyone is well

Misread that the first time around.

Thanks – I’m sure I will! There are many reasons to love Banska Bystrica, but the main ones:

-There are five places to ski within a ten-minute drive
-Beer costs one Euro per half litre!
-The local hockey team are top of the league (tickets 4 Euros each!)

Excellent – Brock Higgs, most recently of Providence Bruins (2 games) has just joined the team!

I live in a ski town! (which is odd because I don’t ski or snowboard or like winter all that much.)

My father-in-law is crazy about skiing, so his kids didn’t get a choice in the matter… He also played a bit of hockey in the army until his knees gave out, so yeah – they’re certainly a winer family smile

I quite enjoy the downhill stuff (but stick to the gentler slopes!) Tried cross-country once – never again!!

That cross country skiing – I kept waiting for the fun. It’s mostly not.
I love me some downhill, though. Gimme moguls, steep hills, all that shit.

If the Bs do make the playoffs, I wouldn’t care much for a first round match up with the Caps – no matter what their playoff history.

At least we can actually score on Holtby now, so there may be some hope smile

Your place in the country sounds fantastic! How long do you think you’ll be fixing it up before it’s presentable?

It’s completely gutted right now. We’re doing most of it ourselves, so… never? I’m hoping we can have wiring and running water by spring. The rest will fall into place eventually. How’s that for noncommittal?

Hey Pals! I’m stealing that, Phony. I like it a lot.
AWOL in never, never land yesterday (nothing to do with the fact the Bs sucked in Washington). Dumpster was delivered and I commenced to fillin’ it. There’s still a couple ceilings to rip down, but it was good to see it not look like a war zone, however briefly.
Flurries all day up there yesterday, even when the sun was out! I love it up there. So quiet! I could only hear the river and a few birds. Traffic is an issue, though. I had about three cars an hour in the middle of the day. They all did wave, so there’s that.
Coffee! And more coffee!!

On my way to NYC to visit friends this weekend. Am going to Flames @ Devils tonight so I can boo Dougie some more.

One of the highlights of that Superbowl trip from a couple of years back was the opportunity to boo Commissioner Goodell in person.

Hmmm…. maybe I should go to the next NHL All-Star game or Entry Draft. Gary Bettmann could use some booing as well.

The Flames are having an outdoor practice in Central Park on Saturday:
