Morning Free Association: February 7

Last night was the first part of the annual Beanpot. Game one saw Northeastern vs Harvard while game two saw action between Boston University and Boston College. The Bruins have prospects playing for three of the four teams.

Some current Bruins also shared their memories of their old college days playing in the Beanpot.

Next week, the Beanpot final will be played between BU and Harvard.

Torey Krug is doing some sort of live Q&A on NHL.com. Assume he signed up for it before this morning. Poor Kruger..

KRUG IS THE NEW PLAYER-COACH!

If this were a thing, it would be awesome. He deserves some sort of captaincy, IMO.

Give him Krejci’s “A”. He doesn’t seem to be using it.
(Why do I really hate Krejci today?)

Why do I really hate Krejci today?

Maybe because he hasn’t been playing anything like a $7.25M man?

You are not alone in this, i too have been down on him this year.

You must be extremely distraught over that!

KPD and Kalman both blocked me despite my never having interacted with them. I’m quite proud of the former…

You have a reputation you’ve been upholding quite nicely.

Heh heh. I thought about maybe shedding a tear.

Not happy with the firing, but it has made for a great MFA.

At times like this we need bloptimism!

Now we need a definition! Howbout A failed attempt to put a positive spin on a terrible situation. As in ‘The hockey General Manager was very bloptomistic during the press conference.’

Into the dictionary it goes!

Earlier I questioned the timing of it, thinking the Bruins had pulled a stunt like this before in trying to hide behind bigger news. Just got reminded of it on twitter.

The Bruins announced Chiarelli was fired on the same day the guilty conviction was announced for Aaron Hernandez. Bruins literally announced his firing one minute before Hernandez’s sentence was scheduled to be announced and less than 30 minutes after the verdict was announced.

This is a pattern of PR cowardice from management. Truly pathetic.

phonymahoney

I just don’t fucking care, I guess. I care about the product on the ice, and the results.

It’s telling when they time it such that NESN, the cable network they partially own, isn’t even airing the press conference they scheduled because there are more important sports matters ongoing.

Once is coincidence, twice? Cowardice.

phonymahoney
Editor

Sure. I just don’t give a crap. And what is the difference between watching it live, and watching it later? It’s not like they’re taking call-in questions.

phonymahoney
Editor

I guess I’d rather be outraged by other things.

The BOB

The BOB

Not outraged, just think it is indicative of their character, trying to hide behind others.

If the timing is immaterial, why do it today? And why release news of Chia at same time as Hernandez? Way too coincidental. This is clearly planned to mitigate attention to their failures.

phonymahoney

The timing is immaterial to me. I just see no sense in being outraged by something that, IMO, is pretty dumb.

As irritated and cranky as I am about Claude’s firing, nothing will ever compare to the Francona firing and subsequent smear campaign. I’m still pissed about that one.

That was beyond inexcusable.

I can not wait for the Redsox ownership to sell. I still believe that Theo did not fail the franchise and that Luccino & Co. was behind most of the big signings to keep selling tickets.

I am glad that the Sox no longer to appear as broken and divisive as they were years ago…but i can no longer look at the sox in the same light. The RedSox are just another Yankees now, and any fan that belittles a yankees fan for “buying championships” needs to look in a mirror.

I can see the argument either way.

In the end what i care about the the people that are put in the positions to make decisions make them with informed judgement with a plan in place.

If/when the plan fails, they announce what the plan is, why it failed and what they can do to make it better. If they feel that they do not have the mindset to do it differently that they step down for someone else to do it in what they think will perform the task.

If you can not perform with the intent of bettering the organization to succeed you get out of the way.

I’m popping my head in here just to say the firing is absolute bullshit. I understand he’d be the guy to take the fall, but the Bruins org should have shown him a little more respect when showing him the door.

What is this I can’t even this team.

Where have you been? How do you think he was disrespected? I’m not watching the press conference until I get home.

Miss Muse

The timing smells. In the age of the internet in a sports town, they can’t sweep this news under the rug but it sure looks like they’re damn trying to. Claude’s gonna get hired somewhere by the end of the day.

phonymahoney
Editor

In the age of the internet in a sports town, they can’t sweep this news under the rug

This is why I genuinely don’t care about the timing, but this is the age of outrage, and this team can’t do anything right. In fact, I didn’t even think twice about the timing until the guys on the radio started bitching about it. Maybe if I cared about football? I don’t know. Ultimately, the result is the same: the situation sucks, the team is not good, and we no longer have Claude Julien.

I don’t think any of this is disrespectful to Claude, though. I don’t think those two things are related, myself.

I just hope he wasn’t left stranded calling for an Uber. smile
