Morning Free Association: March 1

These are the things you need to know about last night’s game:

  • Colin Miller scored a goal early in the first period but was ejected from the game in the second for a good, clean, and hard hockey hit. It is unfortunate that the point of contact was Alexander Burmistrov’s head/ neck area. Chiller was assessed a penalty for charging and a Game Misconduct.
  • Opinions were varied and, at times, vicious (thanks Hockey Twitter™!) Lucky for us, we have our very own ref, who shared his thoughts about the penalties.

Even though he left the game on a stretcher, Burmistrov is going to be ok.

  • Three other Bruins players lit the lamp last night, all in the Formerly Dreaded Second Period: Riley Nash (4), David Backes (13), Brad Marchand (28). Nash’s goal was his first-ever short-handed goal. These goals led to a Coyotes goaltender swap from Mike Smith to Louis Domingue. (I had know idea his first name was Louis!)
  • Tuukka did good things throughout and gave up only 1 goal to Peter Holland on a Coyotes power play.
  • Nothing notable happened in the third period. Nada. Zip.

Slow news is slow. At least both have played actual NHL games from time to time

#NYR have acquired Taylor Beck from the #Oilers for Justin Fontaine per Sportsnet.

    Random thought:

There are teams out there who said, “We need defense! Let’s trade with Dallas!”

Hes looked DONE this season. Unless somehow the Kings are it (Arrested Development narration: they aren’t), I wouldn’t expect it. Such a bummer for him.

This is my guess. Funny because I had heard he chose the Avs over Tampa because his kids were playing hockey. Of course there’s leagues here too, but it still sounds strange.

Oh right, I never did my State of the Bruins write-up. Here we go:

They do this event every year for the season ticket holders. Usually it’s before the season starts, but the World Cup got in the way of it this year. Usually it’s the team president, GM, coach, and a couple players, sometimes including Jeremy or Charlie Jacobs. This time it was just Cam and Donny.

Donny mentioned that he was frustrated with the team’s current play (Claude was still coach). He was happy that the defense was playing well but that the offense wasn’t playing like they did last year. Two big concerns for him were the team’s poor home record and the backup goaltending. He and Cam said they’ve had a lot of internal conversations about how to address the home record issue, and that it’s a puzzling one. As for backup goaltending, they implied that a move might get made.

An area they were very happy in was the Bruins’ puck possession. This came up a few times, and it was clear that they take possession metrics strongly into account. However, they felt their scoring woes weren’t simply a matter of being patient and waiting for them to turn around, as there weren’t enough games remaining to be patient.

They’re very happy and excited about the prospects. Donny wasn’t all “Nyah, nyah, told you so”, but he’s quite pleased with their development.

A STH asked about their stance on fighting and the Big Bad Bruins identity. Cam mentioned that he’s happy with the current state of fighting in the game. He doesn’t like staged fighting or fighting for the sake of fighting or “energy”, but is fine with players getting pissed off at each other during a game and standing up for teammates.

I came out of it with a few impressions:
    – That Claude was going to get fired if things didn’t improve.
    – That they were looking to acquire a backup goalie.
    – That they might acquire a scoring forward.

The first thing happened, the second thing might happen today, and the third thing probably won’t happen given recent play.

Well, the home form has certainly improved!

Not sure what is meant by Staged fighting – I’ve heard that mentioned a few times. Where does Backes v Benn fit in?

Do you think Dobby not playing last night had anything to do with trade possibility? I know you were happy to start Rask in that one but it seemed a bit odd to me against a team Bs have owned.

Yeah..thats pretty much the stuff that most people want out of the game. Especially when it comes to rolling out a bruiser on the 4th line that has no other talent then just to skate to the dot and drop gloves with someone.

I think the majority still think that a form of “self policing” is needed for hockey, if something happens on ice that is over the line that it is expected for the team to respond. Not many fanbases (other than montreal) cry foul when a player responds to being abused.

I think Butch was just making damned sure the Bs came out of last night with 2 points in the bank. Considering how tight the playoff race is, I agree with the call.

Award three points for a regulation win. Gotta be the fairest system.

Best would be 3 points for a regulation OR OT win. 2 points for a shootout win, 1 point for a shootout loss, none for any other loss. Would make the third and OT periods really fun

It kind of does, yes, though their fighting definitely has brewed out of annoyance. Staged fighting as in, nobody is angry, they’re just fighting to get a spark out of their team.

Ah – you mean like two goons fighting each other just cos that’s what’s expected of them? I think I get that.

There do seem to be fewer goons about nowadays though than even when I started following it (about 6yrs ago). Even the tough guys need to be able to play. That goes for KHL as well, incidentally.

A good thing overall, then, although sometimes it does spark the team. Chara’s last fight comes to mind!

    MadScientist72

I’m not sure they can really be called fights when Chara’s involved. They become very one-sided – he hits you, you fall down.

“Staged fighting” typically means the fights right off of a faceoff, usually at the start of a game or period, and usually between established “enforcers”.

As for Dobber getting ice time, I just want Tuukka to get a break here and there. Claude played Tuukka in 12 straight games and it showed.

A stretch during which he took a puck off the neck, got migraines, and tweaked his groin too.

With the exception of the puck to the neck, probably all because he was overworked.
