Morning Free Association: March 16

Things you need to know about last night’s game:

  • The Flames scored first, however, they only scored twice whereas the Bruins scored five times.
  • David Pastrnak scored two times, the first and last Bruins goals for his 29th and 30th goals of the season.
  • Brad Marchand is your league leader in goals scored with 36. Remember, last season, he netted his all-time high of 37. There are 12 games left.
  • The ice was pretty shitty in one of the corners. David Backes went down in the first but eventually returned to the game in the second period. Backes is one tough hombre. He even scored a goal in dramatic fashion.
  • Dougie scores one between the center red line and the Bruins blue line. David Pastrnak scores an empty netter from his own blue line near the end of the game.
  • Matt Beleskey scores his first goal since his return from his knee injury on a feed from Spooner.
  • Thanks to Microsoft via Wikileaks, I had to finish this up on my phone since my computer is now a glorified pet rock with a fan. It was difficult to do. You should be nice to me.

God I would love for him to win the Richard trophy. It would piss everyone off so much, I would revel in it

Screw the Richard or Ross… I want the Hart!

    DrHandgrenaid

I’d love it but I have a feeling anything that requires voters isn’t going his way. BUT- if he won both the Richard and the Ross it would be mighty hard for voters to ignore him

I’m guessing that if Marchand gets the Richard and the Ross, then Burns will get the Hart.

I’ll also accept Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe.

Still feel like McJesus gets it because he’s dragging the Oilers from like 3rd to last to a solid playoff berth. Sure, Cam Talbot might *just* have a part of that, but still.

It’s a St. Patrick’s Day Miracle! Beleskey actually did something!

Just needs one more goal to reach the vaunted $1M-per-goal plateau!

Good morning, friends. Sad I missed the game last night. Going to try to make sure I remember to turn on tonight’s game, though. The wife and I had a nice day together yesterday – spring break should never end.

I love that Brad Marchand is the league leader in goals. Not only because a Bruin leads the scoring sheet, but because it’s Marchand specifically. I bet that’s rustled a lot of jimmies. I love it.

All of them. If you read comments (aka if you are a masochist), it has rustled approximately all of them.

Speaking of being a masochist and reading comments… the comments sections on the two PuckDaddy pieces on the USWNT boycott are even more toxic than any time PD has written about race and hockey, which is an accomplishment.

Can’t say I’m too surprised by that. Never exactly been the most enlightened group.

What’s the deal with the USWNT thing? Read a bit but didn’t see a concise statement of issues. Complaining they aren’t getting as much financial support as the men’s team does? (Same issue as USWNT for soccer)

Read up some more. Here is where I see a major issue that they are justified in criticizing:

Additionally, while USA Hockey spends about $3.5 million a year to support their elite boys hockey programs, they have absolutely zero “comparable development opportunities” for girls.

It would seem like USA Hockey should designate comparable funds to grow the womens game, though instead of going towards youth level only, it should go to the full age range including the elites. The mens program doesn’t need it for obvious reasons…

Basically, yes- along with other certain expectations, like in Olympic years they are expected to move to their training camp for the better part of a year, which means quitting their day jobs (whether hockey or otherwise) for negligible compensation

Hmm, that’s a tougher situation since the same obviously doesn’t happen for the men’s team.
I’d be curious to see how it is handled for softball or another team sport that lacks a major league. It’s not like the USOC or the individual sports organizations pay for athletes in other sports. At least not to my knowledge.

From what I (briefly) heard, it sounds like they get paid for time spent for the Olympics (about 6mo.), and squat beyond that.

And even then, it ain’t much.

That’s frankly what I’d expect… I’d wager it is the same for the other national teams or athletes. Nature of the beast unfortunately.

Nature of the beast or not, the problem (as touched upon by the good doctor below) is that the same is expected (more or less) from these players as the men’s team, but the men’s team is more fairly compensated so they can handle it. Instead, the women have to deal with questions like this:

“It is a full-time job and to not get paid is a financial burden and stress on players obviously. That is the conversation my husband and I are having right now,” player Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson said, according to ESPNW. “Is playing going to be more stress than we can handle? Sadly it becomes a decision between chasing your dream or giving in to the reality of the financial burden.”

Well is the men’s team better compensated? Or is it just that they’re NHL players being compensated by others so don’t have to worry?

If the men’s team were amateurs like back in the day would they receive the same compensation as the women’s?

I will admit that I didn’t adequately research that claim and I don’t know.

My best guess is that, at a minimum, there is a stipend for the men in the non-Olympics years since that is one of the points they highlighted.

You may well be right. I’m talking out of my ass as well for much of it.

Needless to say, the two teams should be paid equally by USA Hockey. That likely won’t solve the problem though since it seems to be more due to the difference in opportunities/leagues/finances that are mostly beyond USA Hockey’s control.

    Good morning everyone!

  • Well that was fun last night (for the 1st period and part of the 2nd while I was drifting in and out of sleep).
  • I love brad and
    http://i.imgur.com/omjcvqP.gif
  • Of course it’s Hamilton who makes Dobby look like Vesa Toskla too, #NARRATIVES or whatever
  • T minus 6.5 hours until I say sayonara to this place for a 3 day weekend. Was asked if I could work Saturday, laughed in idiot supervisors face & told him hell I’m off Friday. He then told me they’re opening up Sundays too. I laughed again. Unprofessional, absolutely, but he’s a fuckface & I’m sick of the bull shit
  • So incredibly excited to see Dropkick Murphys tomorrow. Been a bucketlist item for about a decade now, so this will be fan-fucking-tastic!

    YOU’RE SEEING DROPKICK MURPHYS?!?!

My friend Brian, who I have mentioned many times on the BoT, is a huge fan. He had tickets to see them last week, but he couldn’t make it due to life, which is a shame because he bought tickets for him and his biker buddies. His friends still went, told one of the roadies that they were only there because of Brian who couldn’t make it. The roadie allow them to go back stage. Waiting for them was the entire band and a signed Dropkick Murphys hockey jersey addresses to Brian.
