Morning Free Association: March 28

Last night as the overtime, game winning goal was being scored, Eddie Lack went down with what looks like a horrible injury after a collision with Andreas Athanasiou.

Major props to the Red Wings players who stuck around as Lack was secured and stretchered off the ice. Let’s hope that Eddie recovers well and soon.

In other game action the Preds, tonight’s visiting team at the Garden, defeated the Islanders 3-1, allowing no gain on the Bruins for that final wild card slot. The Bolts won in OT against the Hawks, pulling within one point of the Bruins. Can’t all these other teams just lose already?

Morning, pals!

  • Tough break for Lack, but luckily it looked worse than it turned out to be.
  • WARNING: Bruins-related strem of consciousness below.

  • This thread. I don’t even know.
  • Just went back and looked up the circumstances of Rask's 8/$56M contract and came up with this pic.twitter.com/wrAuWgeE7C

    — Bruins Stats (@bruins_stats) March 27, 2017

  • Twitter has been a really weird place the last couple days. Dumb people have said reasonable things, people who are normally reasonable are saying crazy and dumb things… YOU’RE TEARING US APART, BRUINS!
  • I just don’t even know anymore.
  • I don’t think there’s a goaltending controversy, but I do think it may be a good idea to explore their options. Can McIntyre or Subban play in the NHL? I think thew only answer to that is, “Not yet”. So, what do we do? Hold onto Rask? He’s better than probably 25 goalies out there, but he doesn’t have a great track record with things these last couple years. I just don’t know.
  • I would like to reiterate that I am a huge Rask sympathizer/apologist, but I’m starting to get annoyed with things. That said, having to play almost every fucking game in the first half may have caught up with him. He hasn’t really been good since January. What do you guys think?
  • Playoffs. Yes? No? I think we make them. I hope we do for the reason that I don’t want them to go crazy and blow shit up. Less of a chance they do that if there’s a postseason in Boston and JJ gets his concession money.

    Playoffs. Yes? No?

It really entirely depends which Bruins team shows up for the rest of the games! I’d be more confident if they’d played better in the win over the Islanders. Bs seem to have a lot of games left against teams currently IN the playoff positions. Hmmm.

If they play their best, they certainly CAN make it, no doubt.

Yeah. He seems to be getting less touchy and more normal, at least, so that’s a plus.

    Also there’s this:

I was really talking about the complaining about the Bergeron contract when it happened in that thread. When was that EVER a bad deal?

Exactly. And he made that point as well! Ridiculous!

I’ll take your word for it. I gave up on following Twitter threads because I realized I’m too fucking old to understand what the fuck is going on in any reply thread without someone explaining it to me.

Actually. I may have misconstrued it. I think Bruins_Stats is saying “they remember sports talk radio being upset with it” not “it’s a bad contract”

Did he say anything about the radio? I missed that, I think!

Yeah it’s a tweet from Kirk & Callahan (which I assume in ’15 was still D&C. Same garbage, different name) saying bergeron was only 55th in scoring with 51 points or some bull shit. Because you know points are the only thing that matters in hockey

    Soooo… not Athanasiou, Andreas?
    Good Morning, pals!
I thought I saw a putty cat! Athanasiou putty cats leave with a loss, I will be, yes!
    Reffing tonite!! Kayak polo tomorrow!!!
Yesterday the conversation got around to Tuukka. He’s very good goalie. He does have ” I don’t give a fuck” moments. He would be better behind better D. Yes, you could trade him for better D. A journeyman goalie can look good behind a great D. All that said, to win you need a great, hot goalie. Tuukka can fill that bill. I think you wait for the D to develop and hold onto Tuukka – just my couple centavos.
Mopar coffee!!! That was a typo, but I’m thinking Mopar Coffee might be a good thing! Put some horsepower in your day!!!

Rask was the hottest goalie in the playoffs in the lockout year – got ’em deep into the Stanley Cup Finals.

The question one must ask concerning Rask’s future as a Bruin is:
“How likely is he to do that again?”

    And the corollary question:
“How does that compare to most goaltenders? Especially your other plausible options?”

I definitely think he can do it again, as long as he’s got a reliable back-up. He’s got the skills, but he’s not the ironman sort of goalie who can start 60+ games a season without it having a negative effect on his play. (He’s currently on pace for 64.)

Exactly! I feel he has a better chance of repeating that performance than anyone out there on the horizon.

Sounds like good news for Lack.

    Morning folks.

  • Ugh, an hour into my day & I’ve accomplished nothing but fix mistakes.
  • Why must other teams continue to win. Stop it fuckfaces™ (trademark courtesy of BoT, look for it to come out in the Macy’s perfume department some time soon)
  • Hopefully an easy day on tap…. stop laughing…

-That’s a relief – that was a horrible collision with his head. I’ve got a lot of time for Eddie Lack.

-Fixing mistakes is important. As I always say to Little Bear, making mistakes is fine, as long as you learn something from them!

-Loser points and wins all round! The good news is, not much longer for the Bs to hold on, and they’re gonna have to learn to dig deep if they want to last more than four games in the playoffs, assuming they make it…

-Which is more likely – you have an easy day or Bs make the playoffs?

Lets just say that if this place were an F1 driver, we’d be Maldonado. If management were an NHL GM they’d be Joe Sakic & Dave Nonis.

The B’s making the playoffs by a wide margin.
