Morning Free Association: April 18

Ugh, last night’s game. Bruins lost again in OT.

What You Need to Know About Game 3:

  • Lots of bad and missed calls, mostly not in favour of the Bruins. A phantom tripping early favoured the B’s but the rest of the game, not so much. I blame the refs.
  • Jack needs to stop goading the Hockey Gods with tantalizing morsels like, “The team who has scored first has lost each of the first two games”. I blame Jack.
  • Ottawa started the scoring in the first and ended the scoring in overtime on a power play goal. I blame the Ottawa Senators.
  • The second period started poorly but ended strong for the Bruins for they scored all three of their goals within an eight minute span in that frame. First it was Noel Acciari playing in his first NHL playoff game and netting his first playoff goal on a deflection.

Then it was David Backes scoring his first goal of these playoffs 42 seconds later.

Finally David Pastrnak tied it up with his first NHL playoff goal, a PPG, 7 minutes after that.

I blame the Bruins for getting my hopes up, even though Noel scored when I had truly given up hope on this game.

  • Backes and Dion “Lurch” Phaneuf were not enjoying each others’ company all game. They were sparring (mostly verbally) in the first. Phaneuf was actually penalized for a vicious slash of Backes in front of the Ottawa net which led to the Pasta goal. I blame Lurch.
  • The most controversial play occurred at the end of the game. Riley Nash gets elbowed in the head by Bobby Ryan along the boards as he’s being shoved by a Senators player along the boards. Riley Nash retaliates and is sent to the box. Bobby Ryan gets no infraction. The Bruins now short-handed allow a goal by Bobby Ryan.

I blame that POS Bobby Ryan and the refs.

Please Hockey Gods, if you can hear me -and I think you can- bring back any number of our injured defensemen for game 4. If you want a sacrifice, I will do it. Just please –please– deliver us healthy D-men. Amen.

I saw a PD article from ’14 that highlighted more screw ups by Peel. He’s got such a poor track record. Why is the NHL letting him do playoff games? I mean it’s not like they use the entire ref pool this time of year right?

No, they don’t let all of them ref the playoffs, so how exactly does Peel make the cut?

Thats what my thinking is…like…you dont have to fire the guy and get the league pissed off at you. The BLM keeps a close track on ump stats and % accuracy on calls, only those with best stats make the playoffs.

There is no way Peel is one of the best NHL refs to be qualified to call a play off game.

I chronicled it in the game thread. First thing that comes to mind is inexplicably talking about Sidney Crosby at one point. Suggesting that the Bruins put specific energy into studying Viktor Friggin Stalberg’s game in preparation for this series. There were many other idiocies

    Great to see them rally

When we went 2-0 down it reminded me of that regular-season game against OTT where Bs were 2-0 down after about 2 minutes and then could get absolutely nothing going for the rest of the game. Might have been the first loss under Cassidy but maybe I’m getting confused!

It was great to see them come out for the second with a different mindset and completely turn the game around. Should give them confidence and belief going forward, despite (or maybe even because of) the way the game ended.

Exactly – and the Bs had had like three shots on goal at that point.

It would have been understandable if Ottawa though the same and just took their foot off the pedal, but it didn’t look like that was the case to me.

It was a comedy of errors for the first period and maybe some of the second. Like, they were making crazy mistakes. Terrible turnovers on passes. Puck repeatedly getting caught in skates. Missing blatantly open nets. Skating into each other. Circus shit.

    Hello all,

First off, hope you all had a pleasant Easter weekend. Do you get Patriots Day off work too? If so I hope you’re also enjoying that.

IW’s assessment “such a disappointing end to a pretty fun game” is exactly how I would sum it up.

But, however shitty the call was, and however little justice in the fact Ryan scored the OT winner, it is what it is, it happened and the Bs have to move on and concentrate on winning the next ones.

They’ve proved they can do it even with two-thirds of the first-choice D missing and now they’re getting the tactics right (chip, chase and hit was working and no reason it shouldn’t continue to work).

Maybe I’d like to see Karlsson targetted a bit more – I don’t mean trying to hurt him, just try not to let him get involved in so many plays. He seems such a pivotal player in their gameplan.

Had a tiring day yesterday and was asleep before puck drop, but I watched it this morning. Wasn’t offered NESN as an option, unfortunately.

Was there an altercation between the Sens and a fan after the game? Saw something on Twitter but the NHL.tv broadcast had shut off by that time.

    phonymahoney

I get Patriots’ Day off. It really depends on if your job involves going into Boston, because the marathon basically diverts most of the traffic to the waterfront.

    IntentionallyWidenberg
    Admin

I live approximately one Boston Marathon outside the city. Patriots Day is infuriating because you pretty much cannot travel between towns north of the race route and towns south of the route.

You either have to drive way out west to go around it or in to I-95 as the only North-South interstate which crosses it via some sort of underpass.

This is what i am fully enjoying out of this series. This about where we were in the beginning of the year thinking “this team is missing 2 or three key players to make the playoffs”…to…”this team can make the playoffs but arent skilled enough to make it past the first round”. After seeing this team…they could be a lot better then we ever thought. I would still like to see how they match up against a Washington or Toronto before making too much out of 3 games though.

Looking at their ability to compete, even if they dont win this series, makes me hope that everyone in the organization with a logical brain can see that the plan is working. I think this team is built well for the playoffs with a good combination of speed and board possession play to finally be able to keep up with the speedy teams that used to give us fits.

I would be curious if the bruins are able to retain next year players like Stafford, Nash, and Moore. I think we still would stand to get a top line Chara replacement, but i feel a lot more confident that this team isnt stuck in the “mediocrity level” of never being good enough to win but never bad enough for a full rebuild.

    DrHandgrenaid
    Editor

After seeing this team…they could be a lot better then we ever thought.

If we had Krug and Carlo playing, I don’t think the Sens would even be competitive so far, based on what we’re seeing

Agreed. It seems they have one guy who is a threat, and the rest are just supporting cast, nothing more.

True, but also if you had either/both you wouldnt see a pretty special 19 yr old develop in front of our eyes in the playoffs.

    DrHandgrenaid
    Editor

And that has been lovely, but given the choice…

On a related note, of the 5 right shot D likely to be in contention for a roster spot in the fall, who makes it? One has to assume that not all 5 are still Bruins by camp- I assume Chiller is protected with Z and Krug, so either Kevan or McQuaid (ideally McQuaid, Kevan has been good on the left with Chiller) goes- whether through expansion or otherwise, yes?

    phonymahoney
    Editor

I would hope this is the case. Chiller needs to be protected IMO, he’s got a pretty unique skillset, and a surprising amount of sandpaper in his game, which is a plus combined with all his other fancy skills.

Killer shouldn’t be protected, but I think they should keep him and move McQuaid. Kevan has been pretty solid this year and when playing a role that actually fits his skill level, he gives me absolutely nothign to complain about.

    DrHandgrenaid
    Editor

I’d give up a draft pick to LV to get them to let us keep Kevan to be sure. Then wait and see if they took McQuaid.

Well, to my mind it kinda depends whether you think we’re genuine Cup contenders.

If you’re of the mindset that we can win the Cup, then obviously you’d rather have the strongest possible team out there every night.

If not, though, then let’s use these playoffs to blood as many of the kids as possible. As we have been doing, albeit not exactly by choice!

What do you call that really tough training that Marines recruits go through? Like in Full Metal Jacket.

McAvoy has looked totally at home, and he’s pitched in on the top pair and first PP unit! Hopefully that says a lot for the quality of our college prospects in general.

    DrHandgrenaid

Juolevi also had a pretty awful draft +1 season though. Meanwhile, Chychrun looks tons better than he did in the final run up to the draft (that bad U-18’s he had didn’t do him any favours at the time)

Wouldnt be Surprised to see C. Miller picked up, also depends on what players they pick up from other teams….may not even need D-men when it comes to choosing from Bruins.

    DrHandgrenaid

Well… we can protect 3 D and only Z, Krug, Chiller, Kevan, and McQuaid would require it (Carlo and McAvoy exempt)

Doubt Spooner gets exposed. too valuable as a trade chip even if the team has no plans to resign him. Also, I protect Nash as our 7th forward (Bergy, Krejci, Marshy, Backes, Pasta, Spooner, Nash). Exposes Beleskey Hayes Schaller

Can’t blame Cross, IMO. Yeah, he shouldn’t be there, but he is and is doing his best. Bs need to bury some of those great chances. I like that we’re seeing less total shots, but more quality shots.

there were a few premium scoring opportunities that were just like “OH COME ON! PUT THAT IN”…the Marchand missed net, the backes post, Pasta had like 2 or 3 prime chances with puck in his area that he wiffed on with an open side of the net, and thats not even considering some of the great saves by Anderson…he is a good goalie and he is going to make those saves. This game could have been much much different.

    IntentionallyWidenberg

That was such a disappointing end to a pretty fun game.
    – Fuck Bobby Ryan. ‘oh, maybe I made contact there’ – dirty, diving, lying piece of shit. Yeah, you elbowed a guy in the face, then dived like you were shot after taking the weak-angle punch.
    – Fuck Tim Peel. You chose OT to stop giving matching minors at every opportunity? The one time that matching minors was most clearly warranted?
    – Fuck whatever sequence of events led the Bruins to strap a pair of skates onto a saw horse and wheel it out to defend against a late PK.

I really hope the NHL takes a look at Peel’s officiating and removes him from all remaining payoff games in the boston series. He Ruins everything he touches. This isn’t the first time he has fucked over a game in boston and it seems borderline deliberate at this point.
