Morning Free Association: The Expansion Draft is Nigh

The hockey season may be done, but the NHL year is not over until July 1st, when the new one starts. Before then, we have a couple of important events that will change the fortunes of many teams in the league: the Expansion Draft and the NHL Entry Draft.

As everyone here knows, the Expansion Draft involves building a team for the Vegas Golden Knights with parts for all the teams. Sharing is caring and all that.

Care Bears

Yesterday was the deadline for teams to ask players to waive their NMCs. There are some notable names that were asked to waive and others who were not. The Senators asked Dion Phaneuf to waive his NMC, and as of mid-afternoon he had not decided; he has until the end of the business day on Friday to decide. It turns out that the Penguins had asked Marc-Andre Fleury to waive his NMC back in February, which he did specifically for the Expansion Draft. After watching Matt Murray continuing to flourish in net, winning his second Stanley Cup in two years, Fleury probably just wants to go somewhere where he can start.

Of course, with all this excitement regarding protection lists, it should be noted there are players that were not asked to waive and that will have to be protected:

Scott Hartnell (CBJ)
Andrew Ladd and Johnny Boychuk (NYI)
Dan Girardi and Marc Staal (NYR)

Of course, there is speculation that some deals may already be in place, just unannounced at this point.

All protection lists have to be submitted by 5pm on Saturday and will be released on Sunday morning. Vegas GM George McPhee will have a couple of days to conduct some interviews with unprotected players in which he is interested on each team, finally submitting his list of draftees on Wednesday morning. Seizing a ratings opportunity, the draft choices will be announced at the NHL Awards on Wednesday June 21st. This will likely be the only reason anyone wants to watch the awards, unless you just miss Patrice So much and just have to see him sporting some John Varvatos and hopefully definitely likely taking home some hardware.

So, who do you expose on the Bruins? Who do you hope gets taken? How do you feel about any or all of this?

USA Hockey just announced rule changes. U-14 and above no longer allowed to ice the puck while shorthanded.

Morning peeps,

This being my first expansion draft I’m a little hazy on some of it. Are the Knights not going to end up with a bunch of third-liners and journeymen? I know there will be teams who can’t protect everyone they would like to, but LV aren’t going to end up with any really decent players, are they?

Any word on whether the Bs asked anyone to waive their NMC? I’m guessing not as it wasn’t mentioned above.

Teams are forced to have players unprotected who were actual players (played most of the games of the last season or two) so yeah, it looks like mostly 3rd liners, but also guys who are overpaid (Phaneuf), or redundant (Fleury, McQuaid) or who are unlikely to re-sign (Shattenkirk?)
So there will be a few gems out there.
That plus a favorable draft position may actually set out the GKs to start off surprisingly well.

I don’t know the details either, but I believe deals are made behind the scenes at the expansion draft. Anyway, the 1993 Florida Panthers were a decent team. Stephane Richer, John Vanbiesbrouk, Scott Mellanby, Pokey Reddick, Brian Skrudland, Dave Lowry, Bill Lindsay, the infamous Geoff Smith, Rob Neidermayer let’s not forget former Bs Greg Hawgood and Gord Murphy and yes, a bunch of third and fourth liners.

Yeah, I guess they won’t have any terrible players but no exceptional ones either. I suppose the scouts will have been trying to pick players they think will complement each other, too. Interesting stuff.

They also signed Shipachyov out of the KHL, which could open the door for them to lure a couple more KHL Russkies over to Vegas.

I realize this is not directly related to the expansion draft, but still.

It’s a good point. Just look at Tarasenko and, to a lesser extent, Kuznetsov.

WOW. Shipachyov has a solid resume. 2 time Gagarin Cup winner.

Yup, And some impressive stats even considering SKA St Petersburg has ridiculous firepower. He was also near a point per game when he used to play for Severstal – very much a mid-table team.

They say a point per game average is harder in the the KHL than NHL, but I don’t really know about that.

Shipachyev was a teammate of Koko’s last year

I love me some Russian talent. I’m really sad our last one, who I loooooved, didn’t work out.

I still have faith that he’ll come to camp because he played well under Cassidy. I definitely think Claude played a big part in Koko not working out here. Koko didn’t exactly make his case either, but still.

Hey Pals!
I have a problem letting go of players who have worn the spoked B, even some of the crappy ones. That said, (there’s always a “that said”, isn’t there?) (also, I have no idea about who has NMCs, etc) I feel Belesky should go out to the desert for awhile and find himself. Must we leave D unprotected? Okay, very tough, but bye bye Quaider. Killer’s emergence has made you redundant.
Very warm round of disc golf last night. Then good food at Crabby Al’s (big surprise- it’s seafood).
I think today is still too hot to actually perform work. Must set up a scene that makes it look like I’m working….. wait, no one really cares. Going back to bed!
Double tonight, need rest!!!
