Morning Free Association: That Team in the Desert and That Other Thing That Happened in the Night

Last night the NHL Awards occurred and it was notable for a couple of reasons: 1) the Boston Bruins’ own Patrice Bergeron proved that he is perfect, and 2) the Vegas Golden Knights strip mined other teams for parts to build a team.

The breakdown on the voting:

Linemate Brad Marchand also received one first place vote and others

You may not be able to see it here, but there will be a Baby Bergeron in the near future, possibly October. You can only see a little bit of a bump in the picture below. There were other pics I had seen, however, they had been taken down before I started writing this.

Here’s a list of the award winners:

NHL Foundation Award: Travis Hamonic
King Clancy Trophy: Nick Foligno
Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award: Nick Foligno
Selke Trophy: Patrice Bergeron
Norris Trophy: Brent Burns
Clader Trophy: Auston Matthews
General Manager of the Year: David Poile
Jack Adams Award: John Tortorella
Masterton Trophy: Craig Anderson
Lady Byng Trophy: Johnny Gaudreau
Vezina Trophy: Sergei Bobrovsky
Hart Trophy: Connor McDavid

The show was at T-Mobile Arena, the new home of the Vegas Golden Knights, and it was only appropriate that this would be the place where the team was formed through the expansion draft. The selection on the televised show was clunky and disorganised. Thankfully, someone took notes.

Defenseman Colin “Chiller” Miller was drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights. This has sparked a thousand arguments with the heat of ten thousand suns and personally, I don’t want to stoke the flames. We can have a catharsis thread if you’d like. The one thing I am a little heartbroken about is that this will be the very last time I can use this:

Former Bruins Defenseman Colin Miller

RIP Colin “Walter” Miller meme, 2015-2017.

I feel bad for the guys drafted by the Knights, only to be promptly traded. They’re basically being told “We took you, but we don’t actually want you.”

Even he expansion team doesn’t want them!
(I bet they’re thankful)

So, Vegas has a third and fourth line, maybe half of a second line.
Do they treade draft picks for the first line? I don’t think so, because they don’t have a top D-pair, either, and there’s not a hell of a lot on the free agent market come July. College FA market, maybe? I just don’t know.

Huh. Vegas has our 5th round pick this year.

February 29, 2016: Bruins send Anthony Bitchin’ Camara, 2016 3rd round pick, and 2017 5th round pick to Carolina for Jean-Michael Liles.

June 21, 2017: Carolina sends that 2017 5th round pick to Vegas for “expansion draft considerations”.

I was wondering if that’s where that pick came from.
I was actually just coming to post that question.

What’s the Florida thing?

Hey! I’m back! I was gone for a week in NYC and Columbus. Met up with NYC friends and we drove out to Columbus for the Origins Game Fair, where I spent the whole weekend judging geeky card game tournaments. The convention gave me $120 in food vouchers for my troubles, and I could use them at Columbus’ famous North Market. This included the beer ‘n wine shop. ,,/

He replaces imaginary broken stuff with unbroken imaginary stuff.
But only in a disaster.
