Morning Free Association: What Should Donny Do?

Saturday July 1st, marks the start of the new NHL year. It seems fitting that Canada Day is the day on which NHL free agency begins so that players can celebrate their fat deals with (presumably) new teams. For your information, Satan81 will be setting up a thread and I will be sitting around for most of the day populating the Free Agent Table to contain the information that you care so much about. So, come on by and comment as you wish.

Now, the Bruins can definitely use a left-shooting defenseman and help on the wings. Don Sweeney addressed this (L D)after the end of the Bruins’ season. While he was open to making a deal during the draft, he left the draft with shiny new draftees from all the picks he originally had. Donny also has to re-sign David Pastrnak to a huge, very long, deal so he can remain a Bruin forever (or something like that) and he qualified a bunch of RFAs yesterday so it remains to be seen as to what he can do in free agency. According to Cap Friendly, the Bruins’ projected cap space next season is $13,468,332. While that is a large sum, it’s not much when considering all the signings that need to happen.

There are rumours that the Bruins are interested in a number of UFAs:

I’m not sure what to think about the B’s going in on the Shattenkirk sweepstakes. Or the late-career Return of Jumbo Joe, noted Bruins killer but lately lackluster Thomas Vanek. Do they think Brian Boyle will spark fellow townie Jimmy Hayes? I’ll take a hard pass on Shane Doan, thanks.

What do you think? who would you like to see in the new Adidas Bruins uniforms next season? Have a little fun and go wild!

That is a lot of dollars:

Further to @TSNRyanRishaug McDavid mention, hearing deal will be around $13.25M for 8 yrs. Big win for EDM to get that term, as opposed to 5

100% chance it includes a no-movement clause.

Good. Sounds like a decent deal.

Yeah, not bad for an undrafted player.

Bruins should not sign a single UFA.

I would like Dominic Moore to come back and I’d be fine with Liles coming back.

Otherwise, yes, I agree. The UFA market doesn’t have the sorts of players we need to meaningfully improve our roster.

Moore for sure, Liles “meh”. I’m totally fine with both. I loved Moore this year.

Hiya!

Last I heard, the Rags were preparing to offer Shattenkirk big bucks, but I’m not exactly in the loop!

I also heard Boyle is being lined up as a replacement for Moore. When Moore was touted as a like-for-like replacement for Chris Kelly, I asked what was wrong with the real Chris Kelly, and I got a very good answer from someone on here (to do with the high chance he would spend time in the press box, and Kells was not used to that).

Boyle is younger, but put up similar numbers to Moore last season and his last contract was for $2m, whereas Moore’s was $900k. Hmmm.

Del Zotto – I heard somewhere he’s a bit of a nutcase, but then, aren’t most hockey players?

People id be interested in signing in no particular order (except Pasta):

1) PASTA
2) DelZato
3) Vrbata
4) Moore
5) Stafford
6) Shattenkirk (if you dont have to pay a stupid contract which will put you in a hard place when the time comes to sign our own D-men talent when they his their first major contract)

On a side note…id also be ok with a Bonino or Gagner signing for center depth if he/they stays cheap.

Hmmm… the front page Getty image of Donny had an advert at the bottom. I am both annoyed and intrigued. I’m not adverse to Getty making a little money if we’re using their stuff – and perhaps that would allow us to have access to a wider array of images. But if there are gonna be any ads on site, we should at least be getting some of the revenue… hmm

Eh. Think the picture was grabbed from the wrong place. Used a different image instead.

Morning, pals!

  • The only person I’m interested in on that list is MDZ, and the interest is mild at best. If we can get him cheap, sure.
  • I’d like to reiterate that we don’t need Shattenkirk.
  • Or Joe Thornton, or Doan, or Vanek (who I keep forgetting hasn’t retired), or Boyle.
  • The 18+ public skate in Brighton was upped from 50 minutes to two hours, 20 mins. I got there late last night, but still got a solid hour and 15 in. My outside edge muscles are gonna fall off today.
  • Two interviews this morning. Pray that I find someone to fill this position.
  • So can we just get a left shot defenseman to temporarily fill the void? Huh?
  • Looked at an apartment last night. The roommates were delightful and the place was decent, but I have zero idea what I’m going to do.

I hope we can get a skate in when I visit!

    What’s the position?

    We should!

    Technically two positions:
    CSR and a CSR/Ops hybrid

I dont know if the Bruins “need” Shattenkirk, but it would be nice to have. I really think Chara needs to be put on 2nd line and keep his TOI more controlled. As good as Carlo and McAvoy showed they could be their first years they cant be dependable to play fantastic the whole year (at least next year).

only issue is that he isnt an LD, and thats what we need most. So unless you expect Lauzon, Grzelcyk, or O’Gara to take over for Morrow/Liles we are short on LW defense.

Right now we are looking at:
    Chara – McAvoy
    Krug – Carlo
    ???? – Killer
    McQuaid

Beauchemin and Brendan Smith may have too much of an inflated cost to be worth looking into…so unless making a trade for someone like OEL, Hamhuis, or Sekera….then ehh?

I agree DelZato would be a better fit, and id be happy to get him to fit in at that left shot, but im also pretty concerned about Chara’s overuse at this point. You may be able to get away with finding a really good RW that you can pair Krug with for top line TOI as an alternative option. In my opinion Chara has been a weak point in the roster come end of the year only because they need to depend on him to be out there ALL THE TIME. I think he would be much more effective if we could get him to mins that a 40 yr old is more likely to be able to be ok with to last an entire season.

There’s a rumor that the B’s might have interest in MIN’s Marco Scandella. He HERO charts slightly below Shattenkirk, but comes in at a much more budget-friendly $4M (per through the 19-20 season) than what the Shatt’s likely to get.

That would definitely would be an interesting pickup. I am also curious to see how many deals Vegas is gonna make with what they currently have for roster players. Ive heard a lot of talks about Emelin being a target for a few teams.
