Morning Free Association: One Down, Many More to Go

As many of you have probably heard by now, there was an RFA signing yesterday, although it may not be the one you really wanted.

Yes, Noel Acciari, your second favourite Rhode Islander signed a two-year one-way deal worth $725,000 per year.

This deal means the Bruins really must believe in him and his play after he has spent parts of each of the past two seasons up with the big club and down in Providence. Last season’s stint in Providence turned out to be for rehab after an injury.

Acciari attributes his playing style to watching the Bruins play, especially that of the Stanley Cup winning team in 2011.

The way the team played, particularly during his youth, appealed to him greatly. As a teenager, Acciari watched as Boston surged to its first Stanley Cup title in 39 years in 2011 and drew inspiration from the passion and commitment with which that group played en route to hoisting hockey’s holy grail.

“I think I was a senior in high school and just watching how the grit got them there and how they kept playing like there’s no tomorrow,” Acciari said. “I think that’s the way I have to play every day. Play every game as if it was my last and just kind of focus on that.”

This definitely explains why several of us have taken a shine to him.

Congrats, Noel!

Huh. I don’t think we’ve seen one of those trades where a team sends a low-value draft pick in exchange for negotiation rights to a UFA prior to July 1.

I wouldn’t mind Pouliot on this team, but not at 4 million. 1 million, tops.

Just found out there’s some sort of MLB exhibition game in London on July 4 involving the Red Sox and LA Dodgers! Carlos Pena, Cliff Floyd and Shawn Green are the players mentioned in the ad. Those names mean nothing to me, I’m afraid.
There will also be ” the music of Boston and L.A.” Aerosmith? Pixies? GnR? Probably not, but if I’m off I might go and have a look.

There was actually a PG Wodehouse story about this kind of thing.

I’ve never read any of his. There is a good baseball story in Stephen King’s latest collection of short stories Bazaar of Bad Dreams.

Looks like it’s a home run derby with way past their primes former ball players.

Aha. Yeah, I figured it wouldn’t be the main players, what with the season still going on, and all.

NFL is REALLY popular over here, good to see some other sports making an effort.

SO…i know we have awhile for legitimate hawkey tawk speculation but no hockey makes me sad.

Bruins have projected cap space of: $12,743,332

Signing Pasta is obviously your first priority, but im curious of whom you would like the bruins to target (realistically) to fill the needs.

Forwards:
Marchand – Bergy – Pasta
Beleskey? – Krejci – Backes?
Spooner? – JFK? – Nash?
Vitrano? – Acciari – Hayes?

Moore & Stafford are UFA
Spooner, Schaller, Pasta are RFA
Potential try out prospects: Bjork

Defense:
Chara – McAvoy
Krug – Carlo
Quaid? – Killer

Liles is UFA.
Potential try out prospects: O’Gara, Grzelcyk, Lauzon

Goal:
Tuukka
Dobby? (if we dont give him a sock and make him a free man)

Potential try out prospects: they exist but ehh.

This team is a lil rough when it comes to skill and production.

Who would you like to see fill some of those question marks?

I don’t see us offering Stafford a full $4.3mil/yr contract like he had last season. Getting him pro-rated at the deadline was great, though.

I think Dominic Moore gets brought back.

I think you’re right that JFK has a legit shot at the 3C spot. I think Spooner gets traded for an amount that causes the spreadsheet-obsessed to lose their shit (again).

Riley Nash stays on the fourth line with Acciari and Moore.

Third line is Vatrano, JFK, and Beleskey, assuming the B’s sign a top-6 forward. Vanek?

Hayes gets regular nacho duty, sometimes filling in on the 4th line. Schaller…huh…we’ll see how he does in camp. Maybe he steals a 4th line spot back.

I think Donny’s gonna try to find a bottom-pair defenseman so we don’t end up with Quaider-Killer. Maybe Trevor Daley is a fit here.

so we don’t end up with Quaider-Killer.

I can see why people are freaked about this possibility but towards the end of last season- ie when he was getting good- Killer seemed to be playing more of an aggressive role rather than ‘stay at home’, which Quaider was doing quite well, so it might not be THAT disastrous a pairing …

I think the problem is you have two Right handed Defensemen…..if one of them are comfortable playing their off-side…then fine. BUT i do NOT want one of those two playing a side they are not comfortable in.

Realistically 70% of the time one of the two players will be injured so its not that big of a deal.

The London Bear

Ah, yes – I can never remember who’s right- and left-handed.

Btw, the other day Twitter was suggesting who I should follow: 1. Mick Jagger; 2. Thetallest81.

You’re in good company grin

Haha neat, I rarely go on and even more rarely use it. Mostly when its free agency time period for the rumor mill.

Im not sure if Stafford expects that 4.3 a year though, depends on market obviously but i think everyone pretty understands Buff overpaid.

I would like to see Moore brought back, i think he was a solid player that made things happen on ice when “better” players weren’t showing up.

Id rather see Vrbata over Vanek, but Vrbata is RW….bruins could use that depth in LW….i guess if Stafford is looking for that 4 Mil you could get both and not get Stafford.

Marchand – Bergy – Pasta
Vanek – Krejci – Backes
Beleskey – JFK – Vrbata
Vitrano – Acciari – Nash

I don’t like Vanek.
While he may be good at slipping through vs the Bruins, every team he has gone to has regretted it. He just doesn’t seem to deliver the value teams expect from him.

While i agree, it also depends on price. Bruins are short on LW and for a good price id be willing to pay 2M for him to get around 15+ goals.

Other option is Bjork impresses at entry and have him at 3rd line and bump Beleskey up to 2nd….but thats stretching it thin.
