Morning Free Association: May the Szwarz be with you

By now every Boston Bruins fan knows that David Backes is out for at least 8 weeks after his surgery to remove part of his colon (that surgery will happen to today). Of course this will fuel the fans that already hated the signing and possibly Backes as a player. But we’re not going to discuss that. Instead, we’re going to turn to the next man up.

Yesterday, long-time AHL counterman, Jordan Szwarz was recalled by the big club. He’s been playing well in Providence during this young season and with injuries to the 3 centers, he’s earned the call-up.

As beat writer for the Providence Bruins for the The Providence Journal, Mark Divver probably knows better than most about Jordan Szwarz and his play. Originally signed to a PTO in Providence last season, he’s worked hard to become a two-way player and back to the game on the NHL ice.

“I’m going to push myself as far as I can go every day. I want to get back in the NHL. That’s obviously what everyone wants to do down in this league. I’m going to do whatever it takes every day to get back there, doesn’t matter how old I am,” Szwarz said.

“I was still at a young stage in my career. I didn’t exactly have the offensive instincts that I have now. Each year that goes by, you learn more and more about the game. I think those offensive instincts are really starting to come out in my game in the last two years now,” he said.

The line of Danton Heinen, Szwarz and Austin Czarnik carried the P-Bruins last weekend. “It’s always easy playing with guys like that, good playmakers. I just want to go in and get them the puck, let them do their thing and good things happen,” said Szwarz.

Along with Szwarz, Zane McIntyre was recalled as well. Presumably he’ll back up Tuukka tonight when the Vegas Golden Knights play their first ever game at the TD Garden. Maybe not all is well with Dobby after all.

I looked at the projected lines for tonight.
Egads, it’s practically post-apocalytic.

Eek, I got signed out again. That keeps happening. That mysterious mustachioed stranger is one handsome devil though.

Hey Pals!
Added Chiller to my fantasy team. This will prevent him from having an impact on tonight’s game.
No triathlon yesterday – just a 9:30 start time to my game.I must have been in Colorado or suntin’.
Go Bruins!!! Hoping to watch tonight (I like to watch!).
Coffee!!!!

Wasn’t the general thinking at the start of the season that Chiller wouldn’t make the line-up? He’s got 8 points in 11 games!

  • So tired, but I slept like a rock last night.
  • Going to the game tonight and am really sad that instead of getting to see Shipachyov, I get to see James Kneel and Reilyl Smith. NOT excited, pals. That said, I think we have an extra ticket or two available.
  • Really sucks to lose Backes again. People keep saying he came back too early. I was unaware that all the hockey fans I knew were also medical professionals, and colon experts, at that.
  • My office nemesis is very sensitive and is highly offended by my existence. Basically, her people stayed late on Tuesday to help us because it’s a huge sales day, and she’s beside herself about it. But, you know, we all are on one team here.

  • I’m exhausted and am off tomorrow. I was going to go to stick and puck but instead I’m taking my mother to the federal reserve bank to deal with some old bonds we found among family stuff. Of course, they’re from my Polish side, where half of them died, left their stuff to other people, who then died and left their stuff to other people before managing to cash the bonds in. Lots of paperwork. Fuuuuun.

Hope the Bs put on a good show for you. Better than they did in Vegas at least!

The spare me gif is wonderful. Never ceases to amuse me when people think they know more than doctors, GMs. etc. Uh, if you know more than them then why aren’t you a doctor?

VGK’s good start was fun they’re on a bit of a wobble. Hopefully Bs can take advantage. 11pm start for me, which counts as sociable hours for the British-based follower of US sport!

My darts team got back on the win trail last night! We’re now 3-1 in our debut season. One of my teammates managed to forget his shoes in the pub. We noticed and took them with us to another pub. Where we then forgot them ourselves!

Good morning! How does one forget their shoes? I’m confused and maybe thought you were bowling and then I reread it, and no, definitely darts.

Ha! He changed from his office shoes into trainers to play. The saga of Dave’s shoes is the talk of the office this morning!

I feel like that could be a painful experience if your teammates are particularly bad.

A couple of weeks ago the pub cat was asleep in a corner near the dartboard and the barman made us move him before we played. I was thinking “come on, we’re not THAT bad!”

VGK being down to their fourth-string goalie should help the Bs’ cause a bit. Fleury, Subban & Dansk are all on IR, so they’ll have undrafted 24-year old Maxime Lagace between the pipes. I imagine they’re now wishing they’d kept Jean-Luc Calvin Pickard instead of poaching Malcolm from us & trading CP to Toronto.

Dansk is down as well?? That’s unbelievable bad luck
