Morning Free Association: The Truth About Charlie

Bruins fans’ hearts collectively skipped a beat yesterday when news broke that first-year defenseman Charlie McAvoy was not on the ice for practice yesterday morning.

The day before he was in Foxborough with other teammates to watch and root for the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. This morning after the morning skate, the Bruins issued this:

So, no big deal. Wrong.

By afternoon, the Bruins had released a statement about Charlie and his heart issue. McAvoy has been playing through supraventricular tachycardia which is described in the article as “not considered to be dangerous to his health but can recur at any time and causes significant symptoms”. Apparently, he experienced symptoms once while playing and was medically cleared to play until this further evaluation and eventually performed procedure. And still he was second in time on ice for all Bruins skaters.

Charlie will be in the hospital overnight for observation and will be out for the next two weeks while he recovers.

Morning pals!

Late one for me, which I will illustrate in bullet points:

  • Got up later than I should have
  • Left the house, got halfway to work (only like 5 minutes), realized I forgot my wallet.
  • On my way back to work again, I realized I forgot my phone.
  • Went and got my phone. On my way back to work, I realized I forgot my contacts.
  • Said “fuck it,” and went to work anyway.
  • Meanwhile at the office, I have a new mail clerk starting and my boss had to deal with it all because I’m running circles around Dedham trying to gather my missing objects.
  • Good trip to the gym last night (any one of those is good, right?), I’m feeling the stress though, because three coworkers asked me to do this fundraising relay race on spin bikes. I have never done this before and am panic stricken because I have about a month to get moving on it.

Last week I got to the train station (25min walk) and realised I left my laptop at home – can’t do any work without that! Got a bus back home …

Spinning should be good for the hockey legs, right?

Ugh! I have done that before as well. No bueno! Thank god I live close by, but forgetting things and remembering them at separate times kind of negates that, hahaha

Sounds very similar to me trying to get out the door in the morning!
    Oh, how was hockey?

I can think of a million things I’d rather do! I’m going with flimsy excuse and small donation on this one!

Me going anywhere: Downstairs to car, get in. Get out, go get wallet. Back downstairs, get in car. Get out, go get x. Back downstairs, get in car. Forget where I’m going!

So Chuck is gonna be out for two weeks?

    With a heart condition?

When there are 7 games in the next 2 weeks?

    I’m sure it’ll be ok

Well, the team has recovered its defensive depth, and midseason – with an otherwise reasonably healthy squad – would be a good time for this sort of disruption, I suppose.
The team has needed an opportunity to work the likes of Quaider & Postma into the mix.
    Should be fine.

    Hey Pals!
Charlie out for two weeks? As long as the problem gets fixed, I think it’s a good time for it. The rise of Grizz and Darth Quaider’s return should make it bearable (nyad, nyad) AND it might be a good mental break for Chuck. The NHL season is looooooonnnngg!

Rain, rain!!!! Hoping to be on a river tomorrow!!!! I need some river therapy!!

Double tonight, Jo on the clock. We’ll have fun. She’ll signal the Bruins score while I’m on ice. We should have the game on all the tellies at the rink.

    Work!

Quaider’s been good since his comeback, too. And good point about Chuck – all those minutes he’s been putting in it would be terrible to see him burn out late in the season.

Getting tons of rain in the Valley this morning. Mad River is going to be very mad indeed! Probably should have left a bucket under the spot in my ceiling that leaks on days like this. Oops.

    Morning!

Ugh – Being without Charlie for two weeks will be a real test for the Bs.

I wish him a speedy recovery. As he article says it’s not that serious but the symptoms aren’t pleasant so understandable he would want the surgery. It’s actually a pretty common condition, affecting about 2.5 percent of people. When you consider about 1000 will play in the NHL this year it’s pretty certain he’s not the only one who deals with it.

To change the subject – I think there are a few Star Trek fans on here? Have any of you watched Star Trek: Discovery and/or The Orville? I’d be interested to hear what you thought!

Devils have only one regulation win in their last ten and Taylor Hall is apparently out with a hand injury. So that’s promising!

Add that to the Bs extra long points streak and you have the perfect set up for a Bruin loss! There, I said it, now it can’t happen!

I haven’t watched any series after the first couple of seasons of Voyager. Every now and then I do a TNG binge on Netflix and remember how much I loved it.
