Morning Free Association 2-Feb-2018: Witty Title

This weekend the Bruins came close to having a two-game losing streak. On Saturday night the Buffalo Sabres came into town and dominated a Bruins team that started the game dead on their skates. Buffalo even did this after their star centre was knocked out of the game in the first period. (Don’t worry, he has a high ankle sprain and will come back sometime this season.)

Last night, the Bruins again started a little slow and managed to win a very strange game.

While New Jersey’s first year center Nico Hischier engaged in the popular trend of “own goaling”, Torey Krug managed to come close to what I would call a Torey Krug Hat Trick: a short-handed goal that was actually an assist on own goal by the opponents, a power play goal, and something else. Maybe we could count Adam McQuaid’s first goal in almost an entire calendar year as part of the Krug Hat Trick. C’mon guys, I want to make this a thing!

Oh, let’s not forget how Tim Schaller continues to dominate the New York area Metropolitan teams. With a shorty to end the first.

Seriously, Dr. Schaller you’re starting to develop a reputation…and we like it.

The game was capped by a perfect Patrice Bergeron empty netter…and this after Quaider took exception to a hit that Brad Marchand received from defenseman Damon Severson in open ice just as he delivered the puck to Bergy. Jack yelled about a painted turtle sighting and he was right.

Oh shit! I forgot about the penalty shot that Travis Zajac was awarded when the refs called a phantom hooking by Bergy. If only there were video of his face as that penalty was called. Oh wait, it’s in this whole sequence including the penalty and the penalty shot.

Bergy be pissed. Dobby be good.

Bruins stole this game.

Morning, pals!

  • What a weird game last night. Fun, though!
  • Still not sure about that penalty shot.
  • Also not sure if playing hockey is for me anymore. I’m an embarrassed ball of nerves. We’ll see. Woof.
  • Beanpot final tonight. Go Terriers, go Crimson!
  • I have nothing left to give.

Morning all. Seems like I missed a lot of fun after I went to bed! Who doesn’t love a bit of bizzaro hockey.

The Japanese women’s hockey team did their best to try and make me late for work this morning. They’ve been outmatched in both games they’ve played but wow do they not give up.

They will mash Korea, which is kind of a shame since it would’ve been nice for the United team to no be terrible.
But those Japanese women have great spirit and are very likeable.

    Hey Pals!
Weird game last night, to be sure. It seems the Bruins are in a lil bit of a funk. Now’s a good time to get that out of their system. I mean, they can’t win every night, can they? Can they?. Anyway, just be firing on all cylinders when April gets here!!!
Great day on the river yesterday. It was rising as we paddled…. doubled in volume while we were out. It’s usually falling by the time I get on. Strange!!
Afternoon game in Nuevo York today.

I knew this had to be coming up once pundits started saying things like “I don’t think they’ll ever lose again!”

Both Buffalo & Jersey exploited the same flaw — because all of the B’s are invested in the offense, you can get a guy behind the defense when everyone’s in your zone and generate a scoring opportunity at the other end. The Habs used to do that to Claude’s teams by parking Patches in the neutral zone and sending passes his way.

The Devils are a fast team too which helped them exploit that.

It’s interesting the Bs still haven’t won after trailing by 2 goals considering their offensive strength. Do you think that’s just a statistical anomaly or maybe a strategic thing. I don’t buy that it’s mental, personally.

    Ahojte!

Only saw the highlights of the Jersey game. Saw all of the Buffalo, unfortunately.

A bit concerning the Bs put together two subpar performances in a row but we know what they’re capable of and a win on the second half of a back to back is always welcome in any circumstances.

Probably shouldn’t make a habit of giving up four breakaways in the first period though…

Little Bear had a skiing lesson this morning. She loved it. She’s going on the bigger Hill tomorrow. I decided to walk up the mountain rather than ski today – a good bit of exercise. There’s a drinks hut at the top so that gave me an incentive!
