Morning Free Association: Getting the Pair Back Together

I wish I could say there was an update on Charlie McAvoy. All I know is that he’s wearing a brace on his left knee and he won’t be playing tonight.

Dr. Jess Flynn, who writes consults for Boston Sports Journal and NBC Sports Boston, had an opinion on what the exact injury could be.

An MCL sprain wouldn’t be bad but recovery time would be a few weeks.

While Charlie is out, it looks like Brandon Carlo is moving up to pair with Zdeno Chara. And Chara is ready and willing to play with whomever. We are so lucky to have Oh Captain, My Captain.

The important thing is that all is not lost because the Bruins have defensive depth. (Sorry to put up so many paywall articles today but they’re good ones by Joey Mac). Nick Holden is going to stay in the lineup for now and believes he can play his opposite side, the right. So, he may ultimately be paired with either Torey Krug or on the third with Kevan Miller.

We’ll see later on tonight when the Bruins take on the Red Wings.

I’m thinking pairing Carlo w/ Chara will be a good thing in the longer term, since Chara seems to be quite a good teacher. Carlo was surprisingly effective when originally paired with Z.

Not going to lie…Carlo/Chara pairing this year frightens me. Chara has been making some odd un-Chara like decisions getting the puck out of the zone causing turnovers and extended play in their own end, Carlo isn’t going to help with that.

In other news, Leafs seem to be in a slump & have a few days off good chance for the Bruins to make that point gap wider.

In other other news….Im going to try my hat at brewing mead this weekend! Ill let you know in a year how it turns out!

I had quite good luck brewing meads. They were some of my earliest attempts at brewing, back when all I had access to were bakers yeasts.

Obviously it became easier to access more delicate flavors when I jumped to champagne yeasts. Starting with meads taught me patience, so ales & bitters were easy by comparison.

The only thing is spicing — people try to get too fancy with spicing, forgetting that the honey provides the most important flavor component and that even an unspiced mead is pretty nice by itself.

First batches are just going to be bare-bones to see what yeast strains i like best, Going to try D47, WL001, and WL002. Only thing i havnt decided on is if i want to add stabilizer and back-sweeten or just let them age a year and see how they taste when they are dry and finished.

Carlo/ Chara is a great pairing except that no puck mover. I’d pair Grizz with Chara, Carlo/ Holden, Krug/ Miller or Quaid. Puck mover in every pair….. unless we’re going to see Carlo be more aggressive offensively – a task I believe he’s quite capable of succeeding at.
I think the Bs real problems come when it’s time to pa
