Morning Free Association: One Point

The Bruins played a heck of a game considering they still have a whole team on the 9th floor and a malfunctioning HockeyBot2500 on defense. But did they win?

First Period:

Sadly, the Blue Jackets scored the first goal of the game when deadline darling Thomas Vanek fed the puck to Boone Jenner after Brandon Carlo failed to clear the corner. Bleh.

Kevan Miller was winning the penalty getting game, which is a game in which you actually lose, having two penalties himself. Thankfully, we have good penalty killers like Brad Marchand.

The Bruins led the shot totals in the first 14-5, of which 4 of those were from Ryan Donato. Unfortunately, they left the period down a goal, 1-0 Blue Jackets.

Second Period:

It happened at 5:41 in the second, Ryan Donato’s first NHL goal for the Bruins.

With his father Ted, he became part of only six father-son Bruins players to have scored a goal for the club.

Then Brad performed a clinic for Columbus’ backup Joonas Korpisalo and backhanded the puck high into the corner.

The only thing that could make this game better is a power play goal. Riley Nash obliged.

Then, Columbus’ Sonny Milano scored 25 seconds later. Boo. I don’t know what the hell has happened to Brandon Carlo but he’s having a terrible night on top of a bad season and reportedly was yelled at by Bruce Cassidy at the bench.

Third Period:

Ugh. Noted Bruins killer, Thomas Vanek, scored the tying goal early in the period. Artemi Panarin scores the go-ahead goal at 11:30.

Twenty seconds later, David Krejci ties it up, assisted by Donato, who also had an assist on Nash’s PPG.

Lots of battling! Plenty of hustle! Shots that miss!

We’re heading to overtime.

Overtime:

And Brad has a breakaway off a turnover with only Pierre-Luc Dubois preventing hooking and tripping him from scoring. No call, no penalty shot. Game resumes.

Tuukka made plenty of great saves but Cam Atkinson finally beats him glove side.

tl;dr

No, the Bruins did not win. Columbus might have won it but Boston should have. That non-call on DuBois was shitty and would’ve been the difference because Brad is built for overtime breakaway goals.

Update: Cassidy evidently was not yelling at Carlo…though there may have been some of that. Evidently he was pissed because the entry into the zone was icing and not called, play was on sides so it couldnt be challenged.

The refs and linesmen were pretty bad that night and it showed.

I enjoy pieces about old timey Bruins. His #3 was the second number retired in North American professional sports.

At the other end of the table there’s quite a tank battle going on. One point between Vancouver, Arizona and Buffalo!

How has Tampa clinched a playoff spot already? They lead Florida by 23 points, but Florida can get 24 points if they win their last 12 games.

Ahhhh ’cause even if Tampa loses their next 10 and New Jersey wins their next 10, Tampa has the tiebreaker edge for the last wildcard spot.

Morning, hockey pals!

  • Is Ryan Donato an NHLer or what? That goal was a beauty. Kid was all over the place last night.
  • I love that Savvy will always be a Bruin. I don’t know about DeBrusk on the fourth line, though. He’s got great chemistry with Krejci. Maybe I move Donato to the third and put Heinen on the fourth? I’m not sure.
  • I have an employee who is crazed most of the time. Chronic, petty complainer. Today she’s having an up day where she’s in a great mood, and it’s making me want to murder her because I know the bad is coming.
  • That no call. Wow. Shouldn’t have gotten stuck in their own end, though.

I’m not sure what to do with the lines. It seems like outside of RNash-61, all of the recent additions are 3rd line options, and we already had a decent 3rd line.
I could see putting Donato in DeBrusk’s spot – though that would be off his natural side.
I think Heinen is the odd man out. Schaller has been better all year.

Amazing though Donato was last night it’s a bit soon to be giving him Debrusk’s spot. JD has been consistently great since he was benched a game ages ago and was building good chemistry with 46 and 61.
Donato-Kuraly-Acciari would be my 4th line.

I agree in regard to DeBrusk but I don’t think Donato goes on the fourth line (though I don’t think it would be terrible either). I think if Donato keeps playing like he did last night, he is forcing them to put him on the third line and bench Heinen. Heinen has been decent but he’s cooled off a bit and I can’t justify benching Backes or Riley Nash.

Yeah, Heinen must be just barely holding onto his spot by now.
After I dropped him in Fantasy league he scored in his next game though!

I’m not sure what to do with the lines.

    ISN’T THAT AWESOME?!?!?

I love it when we have so many good players that we feel weirdly putting someone on the third line.

When everyone is healthy, this team is gonna be apeshit.

    Hi Pals!
I had the same reaction as M. Molnar…. Brad is disgusting! He can’t buy a penalty, though.
Nice debut for Donato. Only the win could have improved it! He synced well with Krejci. Nash, Donato, and Krejci!!! The NDK. That’s R. Nash, of course.
