Morning Free Association: Thank God It’s (Game) Four Day!

Tonight the Bruins will take on the Maple Leafs in Toronto for game four of their series. As you might remember, Toronto took game 3 in an unevenly called game in which the Leafs came to play. They needed to or else they would have dropped to 0-3.

But enough about that. In news that should surprise absolutely no one, Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was nominated for the seventh year in a row.

Last year, Bergeron tied former Montreal Canadien Bob Gainey with the most wins, four. Should he win this year, he will set a new record for winning this trophy.

It looks like Matt Grzelcyk will be in the lineup beside Adam McQuaid after returning to practice on Wednesday morning after sitting out of game three on Monday.

The Charlestown native rejoined the team at Wednesday’s practice, skating on the third pairing alongside Adam McQuaid. And according to coach Bruce Cassidy, “it’s looking like [Grzelcyk’s] got a good chance to play,” in Game 4, with Nick Holden expected to slide out of the lineup.

“It’s tough,” said Grzelcyk, who has been a consistent fixture on the back end since being recalled from Providence in November. “It [stinks]…you never want to be on the sideline. I feel like I watched too many games in college my last two years, so hopefully I don’t have to watch too many more.”

Even though Cassidy is committing in the media, you have to think that Grzelcyk gives the B’s an advantage that trade-deadline acquisition Nick Holden does not. We’ll see tonight.

Bergy has already set one record, just by being named a finalist. He has surpassed Pavel Datsyuk’s previous record of 6 consecutive nominations.

It’s hard to break up the SKA line, and Schaller has probably been the best of the 3. Certainly the best at putting pucks in places where points happen.

I have high hopes for Donato, but Riley Nash has been excellent as 3C this year, and I am not super comfortable with letting him go.

Both Nash & Schaller have proven effective at moving around the lineup.

  • This morning I was in the shower and I went to shave my legs and then I thought, “Shit, I should have shaved before the playoffs.” Moral of the story: I hope the Bruins are making me feel guilty about personal hygiene for another two months.
  • You people right now:

  • I’m so glad Grizz is back.
  • The boys need to have their shit together tonight, no BS like Monday night. That was just not good and not the kind of performance you can give consistently and expect to get anywhere in the postseason.
  • PLAYOFF HOCKEY, GUYS!

I actually thought they played well enough to win on Monday – they just didn;t get the breaks or the puck luck that was on their side at the Garden.

That’s not to say there wasn’t room for improvement, because there certainly was. Good to get Grizz back and Nash-20 should be sharper for his first outing after a break (horseracing speak there!)

I also accidentally shaved the other day. We can share the blame!

They didn’t play terribly but it really wasn’t great IMO and if you’re playing anyone better than the Leafs, it’s not going to cut it.

I remained hairy! Except the pits. Can’t get away with that when you’re not in Europe! Seriously though, thank god I’m blonde.

Who says it has to be one or the other?
And why does a bust stop just before the body part it’s named for?

Whenever I hear “neutral zone” in hockey I automatically think Star Trek because I’m a nerd.

Yes, all the defense! And go out there and kick some ass!

Six weeks ago we had the most tundra-like conditions I can remember seeing here. This Sunday is the London marathon and it will be the hottest one ever, and by some margin if it stays like this, or the forecast is right.

Seems like we’ve skipped spring and gone straight from winter to summer!
