Morning Free Association: On to Tampa

Whew! That was a close one. Raise your hand if all the air left your body after that second period in which Kasperi Kapanen scored that short-handed goal in which he deked and made it looked like Tuukka was stuck in the shootout?

raise your hand

Then Toronto decided to make sure the B’s never fully had possession by icing the puck about 5000 times in the second alone.

Then the Bruins had that magical third period in which the Bruins and Leafs had matching penalties twice (in time, not necessarily in words) which allowed one of the best teams at scoring on 4-on-4 was up against the worst team at preventing scoring on a 4-on-4. Guess which team was which? I’ll give you a hint: Boston scored twice during the two instances.

Yes, young Jake scored the first goal of the game and the game winning one. David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand scored to secure the win.

Next up, the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday afternoon at 3pm on NBC.

NHL.com’s staff members have made their 2nd round predictions. Both of the people who went 8-0 in their 1st round predictions think the Bs will beat the Bolts.

I think that if Tampa doesn’t kill us with the stretch passes, then we’re going to win. I also think the Bruins will have to have learned that they can’t give those up.

I also think our inability to get out of our own zone at times will be more costly against Tampa. They really need to sort that out.

I would like to point out that last night all of the sugar maple trees in the I-495 corridor dropped their flowers.

Hey Pals!!
It’s probably a good thing that I was on the ice during game7, it was bad enough getting updates from the scorekeepers. Sox in 2 was on at 12 so I had to wait til 2 am to see the replay. I’m a little tired.
DeBrusk is a beast!! I worry about concussions because of the way he plays, but he is fun to watch!
Bring on the Tampax!!! Bruins can do the same thing to them!! (,in less games, please!)
COFFEE!!!!

  • I’m not afraid of Tampa but we really need to watch the stretch passes because if they’re smart, they’ll stretch the fuck out of us now that the D isn’t mobile at all with Carlo out and McAvoy clearly nursing a worse knee injury than we thought.
  • My coworkers are acting like Andersen is an incredible goaltender. I think they don’t understand that the Bruins didn’t make him do anything FOR FOUR GAMES!
  • What’s wrong with Marshy? What a wreck.
  • Had a hell of a time getting up this morning. Ugh.

The Kapanen goal was predictable & depressing. Usually, Marchand is more effective defensively than he has been in this series. Not sure what’s up with that, but at least he didn’t get his ass suspended like certain other pests we know of…

    Wow. just wow.

I went to bed after Kapanen’s shorty, which followed a period of time when it looked like the Bruins had decided that trying to get possession had gone out of fashion (not for the first time this series).

Still, that was a pretty damned ugly series but the important thing is we move on, and we know they are capable of much better. Waiting for reports of how many Lightning players have died of boredom waiting for our series to finish…

On read-back that post looks much more negative than I intended it!

Great to see the guys rally from an unpromising position. I’m a big fan of Debrusk too so delighted to see him have a great game!

You’re not wrong though! It was pretty ugly but then again that’s playoffs for you!

And absolutely agree about DeBrusk. That kid stepped up big time this series.

There was indeed much rejoicing over that 3rd period. After DeBrusk’s goal to re-take the lead, I felt compelled to shout “SUCK IT, TORONTO!” at my TV.

But after the game, I couldn’t help wondering where all that outstanding play was for the prior 8 periods.
