Morning Free Association: Well…

The Bruins are definitely going to play a five game series after dropping last night’s game 4-2. Game 5 on Sunday is scheduled for 3pm.

Last night the team looked lethargic at times and had difficulty getting pucks on net early; in the first period, the Bruins did not have a recorded shot on goal for the first 14 minutes. While it took a while for Tampa Bay to score their first goal, on a power play caused by a weak slashing call on Torey Krug, the Bruins were able to answer within that period to tie it up going into the break.

This game featured a few things: chippiness between the two teams, hits on Bruins players that made them look like ragdolls being thrown around, and shitty officiating. Yeah, I know, it seems like every game we complain about this but it seems like this is a league-wide, playoff series-wide problem. Tonight saw weak calls on Krug (Slashing), David Pastrnak (Hi-Sticking double minor), and non-calls for infractions Bolts’ players committed against Bruins players: Pasta was boarded in a similar fashion to a Kevan Miller boarding recorded earlier in the game and Brad Marchand was slashed on a breakaway.

All sorts of hockey media were calling this shitty reffing out, including the NBCSNPDQETC in-studio analysts in between periods.

Still you can’t blame the refs for losing a game when you fail to look interested in the final 90 seconds.

It’s okay, every second round series was tied 1-1 after two. The next game is in Boston and our team should show up.

Hey Pals!
Not to beat a dead horse but, can we get some average officiating? ‘,cause that would be an improvement. You can see the ref way behind the play, just outside the blue line in one of the views. How do you get that far behind in a four man system? Brutal. Those guys really blew it and ruined a great game.
I’ll have whatever those guys were drinking!

No kidding. It’s been brutal.

Beat away!

Having a road win in hand already made last night’s weak officiating much more palatable.
However, I found it laughable after watching the Bruins game to watch the Sharks fans whining about every call.
“BOOOOO!!! Ref, you suck!”
Dudes – your guy just elbowed another guy in his earhole. STFU.

Yeah, I noticed that on at least one occasion. Not great.

Morning, hockey pals!

  • Wasn’t expecting to win two games in Tampa, but this one was a little annoying.
  • Krug really needs to stay outside the fray when he doesn’t like something the Lightning do. He’s too offensively gifted to land in the box when we’re potentially going on the PP. I would be OK with him reeling it in when we aren’t going on the PP as well.
  • Not blaming the officials for the loss because it’s a baby thing to do, but Jesus, these guys are bad. So inconsistent.
  • Hopefully we get it back tomorrow night. We’ll see.

It was a winnable game. In spite of some one-sided penalty calls, the real problem was only getting ~20 shots on net. This team should be generating twice that, and I didn’t think that anything the Lightning were doing was sufficient to cause that.
A little more physicality & hustle on the Bruins side would have flipped that game.

Yeah, they took very, very few shots early on. Frustrating.

Yup. Tuukka kept them in that game, despite all the hate that’s going to get thrown at him for that second TB goal. Without him, the game could easily have been effectively over by the end of the first period.

They seemed pretty consistent to me. They consistently called weak (or nonexistent) penalties against Boston while consistently letting TB get away with far more egregious examples of the same penalties. And they consistently tossed Bergy from the faceoff dot while seemingly tossing nobody else. It almost seemed like a deliberate effort to handicap thew Bs as much as possible. Even though the Bs were doing a pretty good job of handicapping themselves by not landing any shots on goal for extended stretches.
