We’re not the only ones sad about the season ending. The players feel it doubly and beyond a few canned sound bites, the usual sounds of Hockeybot 5000, we don’t get much insight into the mind of the athlete after losing a Stanley Cup Playoff series. That is, unless you are relatively new Instagram user Zdeno Chara.
Yet again, the captain never ceases to amaze. Chara has taken the time to express his gratitude to everyone for making this season so special. And we’re all the better for witnessing it.
In his latest post, Chara encapsulates the season (expectations, injuries, success) and still take a jab at the haters.
It’s been a week. The mind slowed down and the thoughts have settled. It’s never easy to lose, every athlete will tell you that. I feel it’s important to see the good side in everything. Many didn’t see us make the playoffs but we played for the first place in Eastern Conference. We won a very difficult 7 game series against a very good Toronto team. I am proud how this team played throughout the whole season and battled through adversities, injuries and negative expectations. We really cared for each other and came together. So proud of our young players and so grateful to have so many leaders on this team. A big “Thank you” to our trainers, medical staff and all personnel working at the Bruins organization for what they do for us every day. To our families for the care and love we receive during the whole year. And mostly to you, all @nhlbruins fans for your unconditional support, for creating an unbelievable atmosphere during the whole season. I see a great potential and stay motivated! We will be back stronger next season. And the work starts now! 💪🏽🐻 #stronger #patience #positive #motivated ————————————————————————— Uplynul tyzden. Mysel spomalila a myslienky sa usadili. Nie je lahke prehravat, potvrdi vam to kazdy sportovec. Myslim, ze je dolezite vidiet vo vsetkom to dobre. Mnohi si nevedeli predstavit, ze sa dostaneme do playoff, no my sme hrali o prve miesto vo vychodnej konferencii. Zvladli sme tazky 7. zapas proti silnemu superovi akym bolo Toronto. Vidim obrovsky potencial! V buducej sezone sa vratime silnejsi. A pracovat na tom zaciname teraz! 💪🏽🐻
Yes, there is a value in stepping back and evaluating the season and looking for what worked, This team overcame incredible odds after amassing injuries starting with the first game in October. They came together as, what David Pastrank would term, a family when they had to battle through so much in such a long season. Perhaps the 82 game season benefitted them as several players were able to take time to heal while they still climbed in the standings, eventually getting that second seed in the Atlantic.
There were so many positives to take from this season. The only shame is that this group won’t be intact next season when they hope to play longer into the playoffs. Whomever stays or replaces those who leave will no doubt have the support of the team leadership and will be brought into the family to take another shot at the Stanley Cup.
Starting some time next month, Bearly on Topic will start producing episodes in which we discuss Zdeno Chara’s Instagram. Join us in marveling at the wisdom of the captain.
