Morning Free Association: What a Knight!

Hello! I’m back from my hockey hiatus to watch the final because I have an interest in the outcome. It’s totally right to want the team from the namesake city of your dog to win, right? If you look closely at her, you’ll see they share colors in common as well.

No, this is not another column on my dog even though she is the cutest. This is about the first game of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final in which the improbable is happening on both sides of the ice. I mean, really, who among us predicted that the Golden Knights and the Capitals would make the final, with Vegas in their first year as a team? No one.

Just in case you were wondering whom you should root for, Vice Sports‘ Dave Lozo has compiled a helpful list of considerations for why either team is worthy of your temporary fandom.

Speaking of Dave Lozo, he totally gets Boston.

So, back to the game: how was it?

It started off with one of Vegas’ great pre-game shows.

Can you believe that there are people who don’t enjoy this stuff? This people have never felt the touch of true joy. Certainly this redneck who enjoys Tim Allen does not understand fun and spectacle.

Within the first two periods, there were several lead changes and all the former Bruins scored goals.

Colin “Chiller” Miller started off the scoring for Vegas at 7:15 in the first. Brett “Dog Years” Connolly scored Washington’s first goal nearly seven minutes later. While other non-Bruins players would score in between to end the first frame (Nicklas Bäckström, William Karlsson), Riley Smith helped the Golden Knights retake the lead in the second with his goal.

Seriously, WTF?

The final five frantic minutes of the first game may define this series more than one would think. The capitals spent a lot of time in the offensive zone and had nearly two minutes of 6-on-5 play but failed to get a shot off, most spectacularly by Lars Eller who whiffed catching a pass on his stick and failed to get the puck on a wide open part of the net. Vegas for the most part kept their composure, with David Perron making a key play that led to an empty net goal to secure the win for Vegas.

Two things that will be discussed after this game: Ryan Reaves hit/ cross-check on John Carlson in front of the net and his resulting goal

and the late hit by shitbag Tom Wilson on Jonathan Marchessault.

I’m glad Marchessault has faith in them.

Morning all. Now that’s how you start a Cup Final! Guess I have to wear my Golden Knights t shirt every game now! Watching made it finally sink it just how bonkers it is that it’s a Knights/Caps Final. I did think shortly after puck drop “Wow, this is really happening.”

Morning folks, hope you had a good long weekend.

It was also a three-day weekend for us (unless you had to work Saturday and Sunday like some of us…). The weather was spectacular in more ways than one. Yesterday was the hottest day of the year, while Saturday night we had the most violent storm I’ve ever seen.

Looked like a great Game One from the highlights. A bit annoying to see the ex-Bs doing so well, but in each case it was exactly the right decision to let them go.

I’m interested in the series but I just can’t do 1am faceoffs any more. I’m less resilient than five years ago. Still, the Rolling Stones have been strutting their stuff in London over the last week. It’s apparently an energetic two-hour show and they’ve got 30 years on me! I must be doing something wrong…

Can you believe that there are people who don’t enjoy this stuff? This people have never felt the touch of true joy.

We did a duckboat tour when we were in Boston. The guide described the Puritans as “people who do not enjoy enjoyment.” Sounds like the Puritan spirit lives on in their ancestors!

Oh thank you smile
It’s quite tough writing NHL stuff because it only gets a small space in the paper so I have to leave out most of what I’d like to say.
Still, climate change seems likely to give us longer, colder winters so maybe hockey will get more popular. And of course, the British team are already getting better!

Hopefully Great Britain’s recent showing at the IIHF Championship will get people on board.

They’re drawn in the opposite group to Slovakia – unfortunately as that would have been lots of fun in our household!

But GB will be playing USA and Canada, which must be amazing for the players. There will probably be some guys on the squad who aren’t full-time pros, and they’re going to be playing against Connor McDavid!

The guide described the Puritans as “people who do not enjoy enjoyment.”

Local sports guy Ty Anderson was fending off all kinds of folks like that last night. I think I shall coin the phase “Hockey Taliban” for some of them. I can understand thinking the pregame stuff is unbearably cheesy, but he had one guy upset with him because he expressed amazement at how it was all ex-Bruins who were scoring.

Amalie Benjamin said it best:

I loved it. Vegas is over the top so why wouldn’t their hockey team’s pregame show be the same way? It’s okay to have fun with sports!

Yeah I’ve got no time for people who are overserious about sport. I know it’s a multi-million dollar industry and all but jeez, there are few enough things in life that make you happy. A game is SUPPOSED to be one of them!

And have you noticed that those of us who like to have fun with sports are also the ones without annoying hot-taeks? smile

HeyPals!
SCF!!!! Very exciting game 1, even if everyone seemed a bit off. SCF jitters? There are so many reasons to dislike the Caps. Lars Fucking Eller should be enough for anyone. I keep waiting for Brett Connolly to turn back into a pumpkin, but apparently it’s not midnight, yet.
The pregame show- honestly, I could live without it. When I want to go to theatre, I go. I feel like it cheapens the game, but everyone knows what a sour puss I am so…. whatevs.
Left early Friday morn for the hills. Fine weekend in paradise. Should be able to host sometime this century!!!!
Coffee!!!!
