Morning Free Association: Happy Day After Canada Day

Well, that kinda hurt.

After taking the better part of a week taking pitches and considering offers, John Tavares decided to “fulfill a lifelong dream” of being a jerkwad dingbatcenter for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Spare. Me. Seriously, if that was what he wanted, why did he have people jump through hoops and dance like monkeys out at CAA in Los Angeles? Why not only talk to Kyle Dubas and be done with it?

After midnight, the Islanders lost their chance at re-signing him for 8 years. It was clear to them that they had lost the sweepstakes. Did the other teams have a chance?

Apparently not. Tavares is said to have made his decision on Friday with the hope that Dubas could make the numbers work because he wasn’t going to sign for only one year. Toronto offered a a seven-year $77 million dollar ($11M AAV) and they had him. It will be curious to see what they do with their cap space starting next year when Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner will be up for their second contracts.

By the way, William Nylander is an RFA and David Pastrnak’s bestie so the Bruins should totally offer sheet him. Take that Toronto!

In Bruinslandia, Don Sweeney was making puzzling deals that fans hope will reveal their true nature in a positive way soon.

The least puzzling move was signing veteran goalie Jarolslav Halak to backup Tuukka Rask. He’s signed for two years at $2.75 M.

Then the others:

Uh, that term…

A local product

This guy

If you’re underwhelmed, you’re not alone. This has to lead to something.

Let us take time to mourn our losses:

  • Austin Czarnik signed with Calgary
  • Noted doctor Tim Schaller got $1.9 million to be a fourth liner in Vancouver

timmy

  • Riley Nash signed in Columbus for a completely reasonable 3 years at $2.4 million

Riley

  • Anton Khudobin signed for two years in Dallas with an AAV of $2.5M

Dobby

It’s hard to figure out how to feel about all of this.

The more I think about Halak, the more I like the deal.

The Bruins second and third lines were exposed against Tampa. Riley Nash will be missed, but no one on those lines were really getting it done. However, the signings yesterday weaken those lines.

I don’t mind the John Moore deal. The move allows for younger guys to develop and puts less pressure on Chara to play until 65.

Agree completely on John Moore. Good depth. Certainly an upgrade over Postma.

Wow, many moves.

Sad to see Riley Nash go, I’d have thought the Bs could offer him that much. Maybe he wanted to move.

Not too upset to see Schaller leave. I know he was popular but I never really got the Timmy love. I like Acciari and Kuraly better. Any news on Wingels? He fit quite well on that line.

Pleased to get Halak (my autocorrect was desperate to call him Halal!). Seen him play for Slovakia quite a few times. He’s apt to throw in the odd stinker, but what goalie isn’t? When he’s on form he’s unbeatable.

Going to miss Riley Nash. Yeah, I thought the Bruins could afford him.

Good signing there. I love Dobby but Halak is more consistent.

Morning all. Pretty much just “meh whatever” on the Tavares thing. Never really got my hopes up in the first place. And I get the allure of wanting to help bring the Cup to Toronto.

Pretty neutral of the FA signings. Haven’t really had a chance to look into them too much. And looking around at other teams (I mean you Tootsies and Islanders) at least the Bruins aren’t a dumpster fire of an organization. $12 million for Komorov?!? Go home, front office. You’re drunk.

I’m bummed out that Tavares ended up in TOR. They were creeping up behind the Bruins as Matthews & Nylander grew more effective over time, but they appear to have just leapfrogged the black & gold.
Doby was wonderful in Boston, and for 15 games a year, I don’t see much difference between him & Halak – it’s as if Sweenius is betting on Tuukka missing significant stretches of time.

I knew that Schaller & Riley Nash were both looking for a raise but I thought that they both filled their roles well, and that the Bruins would find a way to keep at least one. We need MORE scoring depth, now we have less. It’s only day #2, but I’m uncomfortable at the moment.

Hey Pals!
Hmmmm, underwhelming is a good description. We’re certain Sweenius has a plan, though. Right? Right?
No matter, Friday I reached a goal I’ve been training for several years to accomplish. Friends came to get me Friday morn. “You’re hitting the Dryway today.” The Dryway is the crazy class 4 section of the Deerfield behind our house. I tried it once last summer and got my ass kicked a couple times. Clean run Friday! !!!! I’ve been walking on the clouds since!!! best footage I can find of the dryway crushed it!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, Deerfield River is always ice cold!!!!! Spent half the weekend upside down!!I
Double tonight!
Coffee!!

I doff my hat to you, sir, that is some achievement.

And I AM wearing a hat, because it’s ruddy hot, again. That ice cold river sounds quite appealing right now!

That looks like a pretty intense run! I imagine it’s kind of addictive once you can get through most of it.
