Morning Free Association: The Blades’ New Home

With little to report on our beloved Boston Bruins, we turn our direction to another local hockey team, the Blades. After having spent last season playing in Winthrop, the now former Boston Blades have relocated to Worcester, changing their name to the Worcester Blades.

Along with a change in scenery comes a change in management and a new logo. Since this weekend was draft weekend, it’s like it’s a whole new team.

The team has hired a new coach, Paul Kennedy, who used to be the skating coach for the Women’s National Team with USA Hockey before retiring from that position in 2014.

I hope the fresh start is what they need to succeed. Maybe Boston was too crowded a market for the league with the NHL and several college teams and another women’s team from the competing NWHL. We’ll see if the team can thrive in the Woo.

“the Woo”?
I’ve heard “WormTown” but not “the Woo” (though Wormtown may have originally just been a basement club – it is now at least a microbrewery so probably a valid nickname)

The Blades aren’t playing at the DCU center, so I had to look up where they were playing. It’s at the practice facility for the Railers (ECHL). Which is in “the Canal district” which I had never heard of. It’s out between the Galleria/Fashion-Mall and Washington Circle. When they described it I thought “Hey, that’s where my car was broken into when I was in college!” (it’s seriously one block away). The facility only opened last year – hopefully the area has gotten safer since I was in school.

They’ve done a lot of work in that area since I lived out that way – there used to be this great old (read “stunningly beautiful but in dangerous disrepair”) train station there – they seem to have replaced it with a far less interesting building.

I’m from Worcester in England and have heard locals refer to it as the Woo…

The old train station in New Haven was a mini grand central. Beautiful building that was restored inthe mid 80’s Nearly hot torn down even though it was a national landmark. Cass Gilbert architect…

Morning all. Second week is a row where I’m not doing my usual full week. Have Friday off. Then Sunday and Monday for Labor Day. Working a full week after all this is going to be odd.

Nice! One of the many things I love about our desks at work is raise it to stand, I can also stare out the window. (Uh, I mean work. yeah, that’s it.)
