Morning Free Association: Captains Practice

Hockey is coming.

While we’re still in the throws of the hockey offseason, some members of the Boston Bruins are back on the ice at Warrior Arena. Yesterday was the first of the Bruins annual captains practices and so many players are back in town to participate.

Brandon Carlo, who has spent the past two post-seasons watching games rather than playing in them, spoke to the press about his recovery from a broken ankle suffered on March 31st.

Wait, there’s more. Former Bruins Matt Beleskey, Dominic Moore, and Lee Stempniak were also on the ice.

Matt Beleskey is still under contract with the New York Rangers and is just a participant. But the presence of both Dominic Moore and Lee Stempniak are interesting. Both are unrestricted free agents. While both live in the area and could just be using this opportunity to keep in form, one wonders if either could be offered a PTO or some other deal. With the Bruins facing off against the Calgary Flames in the O.R.G. NHL China Gamesin Shenzhen and Beijing to start preseason play, the Bruins will likely need to stock up on some players to fill out rosters. Both veterans could certainly do that. However, since there is no word from the Bruins about either of these players, it’s not likely these players will join the team.

Stempniak is an interesting add to the mix.
He was a pretty effective complimentary piece when he was in the Bruins. Would adding him allow Backes to slide over to C and put Kuraly & Acciari back together? Or does the presence of Wagner make this moot?

I feel that Stempniak is still a viable option. He can fill a few different roles and adds a little insurance, depth wise, and some veteran calm should the young fellas be unsteady early on.

Okay. When you’re not sure what to do…… start cleaning the house. Something else that you could be doing will occur to you shortly.

Hey Pals!
Something to talk about. Yay!
Love the picture of Carlo. Phony, check out Carlo’s left skate. That thing is paid over on the outside edge and he is driving it under him – power stroke!!!! Most of the leaning is from the hip down, keeping his weight over the skates. He has beautiful form. Hoping he can be Gord Kluzak minus all the injuries.
Also, I’m hoping Wiley Sherman makes the team someday – only because I hip checked him into oblivion once. He was only about 17 then and a little bit of newborn colt still in his form…… still.
I’m having trouble getting my day started as Jo is in Miami and I should be making her breakfast….. I’m so confused! Mo coffee!!!!

He was only about 17 then

He’s only 23 now…

But that’s still older than Pasta, Debrusk and McAvoy! I find it interesting how players develop at such different rates.
