Morning Free Association: Staying Home

Last week, Bruins players starting coming back to Boston for captains practices prior to the start of training camp, which begins next week. Late in the week, word came that Patrice Bergeron will not go to China to participate in the games against the Calgary Flames in Shenzhen and Beijing.

Patrice Bergeron ended up with a groin injury that the medical team decided to wait and see if it healed on its own, using surgery as a last resort. Well, Patrice had the surgery and is still rehabbing, hoping to be ready for the season opener.

Yesterday, word came that Zdeno Chara was also opting out of these China games, preferring to stay behind in Boston.

Unlike most of the other players listed above, Chara isn’t nursing an injury; he’s just not up for all the traveling between time zones.

“I was asked early in May or June if I would like to go, and I said I wouldn’t mind it. But now it’s just kind of that I’m totally okay staying back. I’m not sad or upset about it,” said Chara, who seemed to pretty clearly prefer staying behind in Boston. “I’m kind of glad I’m staying back. I don’t have to deal with the travel and the different time zones. I’ve just come back from Europe, so I know the guys will be dealing with quite a few time differences when they go out there and then when they come back.

“I can always enjoy some more time being in Boston. There is plenty of time to [visit China] later on so I’m not worried about it.”

As for the other players, most are still recovering from injury. Noel Acciari was the recipient of the seemingly annual offseason sports hernia surgery; last year it was Bergy. Torey Krug had a non-surgical recovery from a brutal looking ankle fracture. Anders Bjork had season ending shoulder surgery earlier in the calendar year. Only Danton Heinen and Sean Kuraly are injury-free, deciding to stay home since they went to promote the NHL games this summer.

Heal up (and rest up), guys!

Man, any real NHL buffs in Shenzen are gonna be disappointed – the Bruins two biggest veteran superstars aren’t showing. Hope you guys like Marchand & Krejci.

Work update:

A few weeks ago I got an additional job brewing kombucha. My hours at the construction firm were cut so I needed something.

The people at UpDog Kombucha really like me and gave me a raise already, so I will only be working at the construction firm two days a week, so I won’t be here much again!

Congrats on the new income stream. Don’t kill yourself with too many time commitments.

Thanks!

As for time commitments, that partially why I took this job. I can quit some of my lesser jobs now. At the construction firm, I will now only be working 8 to 10 hours a week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Originally, this firm hired me for 30 hours a week. I was in charge of accounts payable, payroll, filing and completing back taxes from payroll (this place WAS a mess.)

After getting a routine down, I quickly ran out of things to do each week. I have maybe worked 25 to 30 hours four times since I took this job in mid January.

UpDog Kombucha was started by two Wake Forest students in their dorm rooms. They graduated a year ago and have moved their production to a larger facility. At age 29, I am their oldest employee. I am happy to work with such youth. Aside from manual labor, I have a lot to offer. I really see this company growing. When I (finally) graduate in a year and half or so, I can see myself being their HR guy or Winston-Salem distribution guy. They are expanding to Raleigh now, with future plans to go into Atlanta and set up HQ there.

I currently work 4 jobs, but that number is about to be reduced in half.

    Sorry about the co-worker.

I’ve got limited resources at work. It will probably be dinnertime before I can both reset your password and communicate it to you.

    Hey Pals!
I’d like to go to China, unless I was about to embark on a grueling season of ice hockey. I recall a rather nice season the last time the Bs went overseas for the preseason, could it happen again? Healthy players would help. A few Leafs getting mulched wouldn’t hurt. Bustin’ a cap in a couple of the Cap’s asses wouldn’t hurt, either.
    Must work today. Coffee, please.

And some Penguins getting put on ice, some shocking setbacks for the Lightning and some folks in NYC getting deranged (or deRangered). And, while we’re at it, some Jets crashing and burning, Predators becoming prey and Knights getting unhorsed.

And how the holy hell are there 8 teams with worse odds of winning the Cup than the HabNots!?!?!

Odds to win the Stanley Cup (@BovadaOfficial):

    TOR/TBL +750
    WPG +950
    NSH/VGK/WSH +1100
    PIT/BOS +1200
    SJ +1600
    EDM/STL +2000
    CHI/LAK +2500
    PHI/ANA/DAL/CBJ +3000
    CGY +3300
    MIN +3500
    NJD/COL +4000
    FLA +5000
    MTL +7500
    NYR +8500
    BUF/CAR/NYI/ARI/OTT +10000
    VAN +12500
    DET +20000
