Morning Free Association: Street Hockey in Allston

Yesterday, the dapperest ambassador for the game of hockey was in Allston to dedicate a street hockey rink for kids in his name. Yes, Hall of Famer Willie O’Ree and other current and former Bruins were on hand to christen the rink and announce an initative of the Boston Bruins to donate money to improve rinks around the city.

Of course former B’s defenseman and current NHL Director of Social Impact, Growth, and Fan Development Andrew Ference was also in town for this event.

After O’Rees remarks, two teams of children played the first game there. Pretty much all of the hockey players cited playing street hockey as important in growing their love of the game, whether it was in warmer or colder weather.

“That’s basically my childhood in a nutshell, really,” said Bergeron. “Coming back from school, or even in the summertime, we played street hockey. It didn’t really matter…it was basically my street, just go out in front and just play hockey.

“In the winter it was nice because we’d have some boards with all the snow that was getting plowed. That was helpful.”

Of course it was, Bergy, you perfect four-time Selke winning defensive forward, you.

In other news: forward Ryan Donato has been sent down to Providence. His play this season has been lacking and he’s not scoring enough to not be a liability. Hope you find your game in Providence, bud.

Hi Pals!
Day one of three days of rain…. still no roof. Had to shut half our power off as water was coming through a ceiling fixture. Hey, the stove works and there is coffee,

Morning.

Quite pleased to see Donato go to Providence – hopefully it will help him. I was beginning to think of him as this year’s Vatrano.

Found this this morning, by an exciting up-and-coming sports writer (not me!), and it got me thinking:

https://blackngoldhockey.com/2018/11/01/do-the-bruins-need-to-make-a-trade/

I think there’s certainly scope to make a trade to improve the forward depth and I think they should take a gamble. The Bs’ scouts are obviously among the best in the game, and I’d be asking them to be on the look out for a youngish (3rd year-ish) player who hasn’t developed as expected but still has potential.

Not sure who, exactly, but sometimes a change of scenery gives players a new lease of life. Look what Taylor Hall did last year after stagnating in Edmonton for a few years.

What to give up? I’d be tempted to say Grizz – although with the frequency the Bs are down at least three defencemen… Is that normal, by the way? Do other teams have the same problems? And maybe package him with Backes, but we’d probably have to retain a chunk of his salary.

I don’t know – maybe I’m talking out of my arse, as we say! Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade coming.

That’s plenty long-winded enough! Time for a coffee!

I’m not ready to trade yet!! Of course, i would be a terrible GM, so…..Backes is pretty much done, that seems true. Who’s going to want him…. any teams trying to reach the cap floor?
Hope Providence can straighten out Donato. If not Providence, RI, maybe Divine Providence?

Yes – and you’ve just reminded me of something I was going to say about the Carolina game! Bergy was being too nice! In the last five minutes there were two occasions he could have had a high-percentage shot on goal but he tried to give it to Marchy, presumably because he was on a hattrick. I was wondering if anyone else had picked up on that.

Yeah, I don’t think many teams would want Backes so if the Bs wanted to move him they’d probably have to make a trade partner take him as part of a package.
