Morning Free Association: Avalanche!

It was supposed to be the battle of the two best lines in hockey. For the most part, those two lines cancelled each other out, then it became a battle of secondary and special teams scoring. It was all going well, until the giant was felled.

The game was fast paced throughout. At one point in the second Jack Edwards stated that they lost two TV timeouts (advertising breaks) due to the fact that there were very few stoppages in play. Games are more fun when they play instead of taking constant face-offs. I bet those fans in the Pepsi Center who used the bathroom at some point had a lot of fun standing in the entryway of each section, waiting for the action to stop.

Colorado started off the scoring, when Gabriel Landeskog wrested one past Halak. I guess he needed to do something the same period that Patrice “Body Slam” Bergeron landed a hit that knocked the larger Landeskog on the ice.

Before the end of that period, David Pastrnak would score on the power play and Jake DeBrusk would get the first of two goals, this one on a breakaway.

Unfortunately, the first period claimed a casualty; the captain took an awkward hit by old friend Carl Soderberg and left the game with an apparent knee injury.

I’m not sure we’re ever going to have a full complement of the defensemen who started the season on the top six. We keep worrying about what to do/ who to play when Defenseman X returns only to have Defenseman Y, and Z fall to injury.

Jake DeBrusk lit the lamp again early in the second.

But after that, it was all Colorado. Two power play goals reminded us that what made the Bruins penalty kill great was Chara and Carlo, neither of whom was playing in this game after the first period, or in the case of Carlo, not at all. The Avalanche had scored two more even strength goals in between those PPGs and with a 5-3 lead deep in the third, they looked well on their way to winning.

Which they did. Carl Soderberg, destroyer of Zdeno Chara, nailed the coffin shut on his former team, 6-3.

It could have been worse, by one more goal. David Krejci made a valiant effort to prevent an empty net goal. Add him to the list of Bruins who could sub in for goaltender.

The Bruins travel tonight to Dallas where they hopefully will get a good penalty killing defenseman back.

It was a really fun game through the first period and up through that last DeBrusk goal. Then they started playing ‘hot potato’ with the puck. And Halak was pretty unspectacular (quite frankly, he was letting in the same sort of goals Tuukka gets raked over the coals for – short side, five hole).

So playing with 5-D (including only one top-4 player) against one of the best forward lines in the league is kind of a problem. Good to know. Hope Z is in shape to play again soon.

In the meantime, welcome to the Jakub Zboril experience.

I moved back to Winston-Salem. The Raleigh experiment was a failure. What can I say? Winston-Salem is home! It took leaving for six months to discover that, but now I know.

AND HOLY SHIT. I am busy, but feeling good.

Hey Pals!
Got home just in time to see the wheels fall off last night. Had B2B all to myself, sadly. No one to commiserate. Jo had the game on but, mercifully, had passed out.
Carl was the Carl we hoped and dreamed for last night…. too late, too late.
I’ve criticised Chara in the past (probably unfairly, God knows what pain he’s played with o’er the years), but he has been awesome this season. Didn’t take the Avs long to take advantage of his absence. I hope it’s minor, but that looked ugly.
The other d looked okay, but….

Morning all. Well that’s not result I wanted to wake up to. Though it is sort of amusing scrolling through Twitter in the morning and you start seeing where things went off the rails. Catching up on overnight Twitter can be a roller coaster of emotions!

I watched until halfway through the second this morning – it was all looking so good then!

Seriously are defensive injuries a thing for every team or is it just the Bruins? I thought it was bad when half the first-choice D-men were out. Now it’s the lot! ALL! Crazy.

A couple of things I took from what I saw of the game though
1) Pasta on both powerplay units. Why not! I’d love to see him get to 50 this season.
2) I’m not sure how the Bs ended up on the PP for that first goal. The sequence of play seemed to be Avs number 12 getting smashed round the head with a stick and then another Av getting hooked. Still, we’re due a bit of ref luck!
