Morning Free Association: Nifty’s Night

Who knew that last night would have more than one hero; one who made a return after a journey down the interstate, the other returning to his former glorious form. All of this happened during the night Rick Middleton’s number was lifted to the rafters never to be worn again.

No, Kaspars Daugavins, it was never really your number.

Ryan Donato grew up with a father who played for the Boston Bruins for much of his career. His father Ted’s favorite player growing up was Rick Middleton. In appreciation of Middleton, Ryan Donato always wore the number 16 on every hockey team he played, with the exception of the Boston Bruins because the number was not available when he made his debut last season. He chose an adjacent number, 17, instead. It’s only fitting that on the night that Nifty’s number was officially retired, the one who would have worn it as his choice, won the game in the shootout.

Tuukka Rask had a terrible start to his season, requiring some time off to attend to some personal matters. Since he’s returned, he’s been good, keeping the Bruins in most games that he’s played. Tonight was no different. Yeah, he let in a goal on a delayed penalty after letting up a bad rebound. But, he allowed no others on the evening.

In fact the only other score in regulation was by our own Brad Marchand to tie up the game on the power play, assisted by David Pastrnak.

Not a lot of positive stuff happened in between that goal and the end of the game. David Krejci lost at least one tooth and old pal Johnny Boychuk picked it up and brought it over to the bench. Krejci got some repairs and came back just a little lighter in the mouth.

In OT, Mat Barzal thought he scored a goal. Too bad there’s such a thing as goalie interference to negate these things. This is what happened:

The puck rebounded off Tuukka’s pads but with his being tied up with AnthonyBeaujolais Bienvenido Belleville Beauvellier and Jake DeBrusk also plowed into him, there was no way for Tuukka to reset. Of course the Isles protested and the review came back as no goal.

As stated before, it didn’t matter because this game ended on a shootout, a shootout that resulted in exactly one puck making it across the red goal line and that was by one Ryan Donato.

Interesting second line centre(s). Krejci presumably at the dentist today!

I hear that Ryan Donato knows a dentist.

Krejci’s replacement is particularly interesting: Stempniak/Kovar
a.k.a. Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Picture and Mystery Date

Kovar I understand, Stempniak surprises me. It sounds like they are keeping him in the wings in case of late-season injuries

no solution to our roof!

Was this the argument with the roofers? Are they waiting for an apology?

Hi,

When Anders Lee scored their goal, the NESN scoreboard put up ANDERS GOAL. I though that was a bit odd and informal until I realised the ISL was underneath the Delayed Penalty graphic!

Morning all. Don’t feel like dealing with anything today. This week has been a constant uphill battle. Renewal season will be the death of me.

Hi Pals!!
Huzzah for Nifty!! I watched so many Bruins games with my kids back then. Pederson/ Middleton were as dynamic as Bergy and Marchand are now. Middleton could find open space and Pederson could find Nifty. I think they did borrow a bit of Guy LaFleur’s hair for that painting.
The game!! Tuukka!!! Looks like he’s in midseason form! Great, as we’re closing in on midseason. Hey, he’s just one of those guys that’s a lil slow out of the gate. He ‘s a horse and he (F)fin(n)ishes strong, my money is on him.
The D on the whole doing well. Clifton and Lauzon saying”the future is bright”. Kampfer coming close to his first goal in a cub’s age.
Loving this hockey team!!!!!

I think my favorite thing with the number retirement ceremonies is the look on their faces. You can see how proud they are mixed with a bit of disbelief like “Wow, can’t believe this is a thing that’s happening to me.”

I thought Nifty looked more relaxed than most. It must be an incredible feeling.
