Morning Free Association: Trade Deadline Looms

On Monday, NHL GMS will have their last day of wheeling and dealing to find the perfect parts to complete their teams for Stanley Cup Playoff runs or to part with players to make room for rebuilding the future. There has been much speculation about what Don Sweeney will do to improve the Bruins.

As you may remember, Sweeney made a huge move to obtain Rick Nash from the New York Rangers, moving Ryan Spooner, the Matt Beleskey contract (with some salary retained), and defensive prospect Ryan Lindgren to make space to re-sign Rick Nash, which he felt the Bruins could have done.

This season, he’s decided he doesn’t want a rental, but rather someone he knows he can sign to a long term deal.

From Conor Ryan of the Boston Sports Journal:

“I’d like to invest in somebody that’s going to be with us,” Sweeney said. “But I’d like the best player to impact our lineup as well. That might sound like it’s a bit ambiguous, but I think, in all honesty, I thought we had a chance to re-sign Rick Nash. That was one of the caveats to that.

“We moved out people that were occupying financial space and we felt like we were in a position to do that. We could have re-signed Rick Nash and he was a really good fit for our hockey club. That went into part of the decision-making, in terms of what we’re giving up to acquire the player. We felt he was a good fit, and I still would have liked to add him. It’s unfortunate and obviously wish him well, but we could use him right now.”

He also thinks that the secondary scoring is still going to come from players currently on the roster like Danton Heinen, who has already improved when moved up to the top line alongside with Bergeron and Marchand, and Jake DeBrusk, who recently broke a long scoreless streak on a line with a recently added Peter Cehlarik.

Matt Kalman suggests that Don Sweeney target Mark Stone at all costs, which will involve a hefty salary next season around $9 million and a severe lack of Jake DeBrusk on the Bruins roster. I’m sure if the Sweenius feels he can pull it off, he will but hopefully with a less fun player.

Valentine’s Day!!! We’ll celebratetomorrow, I guess, as Jo has to work tonight. It’s just a Hallmark invention anyway, right? I told y’all she caught me on Sadie Hawkins Day, right? Oh yeah, go for the guy with the bum knee. Low hanging fruit, eh?

Hey All!
I don’t want Sweenius to get crazy(not a big danger there, methinks). No moving of our young, groovy guys. I really feel Backes and Moore, if you are selling, standing pat is okay with me this year.
My untouchables – everyone under 27! And the older guys…… I don’t think they are going anywhere. I feel the Bruins should let this team roll to whatever their fate, then clean up the mess or celebrate their success. I feel like the addition of Cehlarik and the continuing emergence of DeBrusk and Heinen may be enough. And if it’s not, reassess later. Be strong, Donny, be strong!

Trades always stress me out because I can see the pros and cons of needing to make trades. And I always worry it will be a bust. This is why I’m not the GM of sports things.

Right! Sweenius twisted his Harvard brain into a bag of pretzels to get the Rick Nash thing done and POOF! Dreams go up in smoke….. not Bahama dreams, though…. They are happening!!!!!

I agree with you entirely. Moore could be a decent trade chip because he’s quite good – just not good enough to crack the Bs top six.

Of course if there’s a repeat of a couple of years ago and we have to start the playoffs with Providence’s defence we might miss him. But lightning doesn’t strike twice. Does it?

Or does it….??????

The Lightning struck 6 times the last time they played so I’m feeling pretty conservative with the defense.

I’m feeling the joy for Mark Stone if they can sign him long term (at a not-insane price tag). The Lightning intimidate me right now – the Bruins got their butt handed to them with scoring depth issues last postseason. I have a lot of hope for DeBrusk coming out of his funk next season, but I’d trade him or any other Bruins forward outside of the big 3 for Stone. A big piece like that is gonna be needed to crack a tough nut like Tampa.

Say it isn’t so!! It might be tough to hang onto Stone. I’m not sure he’s enough, especially when you subtract x (x being whatever). I love the kids!!!! I’m way too sentimental to be a GM!!!!!
