Morning Free Association: Stripped of its Blubber

Last night, the Carolina Hurricanes stormed into the Garden in disguise as the Whalers, a team that has been defunct since 1997. Since they were riding their cash grab nostalgia, the Bruins were forced to wear their boring old road whites. Why couldn’t they rock their awesome Winter Classic jerseys?

Early in the game, Micheal Ferland checked Marcus Johansson with a clean but hard hit. Johansson was knocked out of the game and helped off the ice. Ferland was also sent flying but managed to play another shift when he agreed to dance with David Backes. Although Ferland appeared to win, he left the ice and the game with an upper body injury.

Sebastian Aho scored twice, once in the first (a deflection off his skate), then in the second before the Bruins had an answer. Then , the Mayor of Walpole assisted by Brando Carlrissian

Believe it or not, Brandon Carlo led the team in shots on goal with 9, and had at least 6 by this point in the game.

Before the end of the second, Jake DeBrusk tied it up, assisted by David Krejci.

Early in the third, the Bruins were penalized for the second (SECOND!) time in the game too much man, the Bruins were handed their second short handed goal attempt in the game. the first, involved a speedy Marchand on his own and a five-hole that Curtis McElhenney refused to keep open. The second was much more successful with Marchand and Bergeron participating.

The Bruins took their first lead of the game, 3-2.

And then the Canes tied it up.

overtime

It took a couple of shifts for the Bruins to put the proper pressure on the Canes. David Krejci was the lone Bruins forward on the ice when he took the puck down deep in the Canes’ zone. Linemate Jake DeBrusk skated onto the ice and immediately lasted some pressure on McElhinney. David Krejci was able to seal the deal.

The point streak continues at 17. Next up: Florida on Thursday.

An update on Marcus Johansson

As you can see, there a re a lot of different takes on this wink

So apparently Micheal Ferland (who should learn to spell his own damned name correctly!) also left the Kings game early with an undisclosed upper body injury just a week ago. Seems like there’s some sketchy injury handling going on in Canes-land. (It could be completely on the up & up, but it smells like a team hiding a concussion)

Oh and what on earth was up with starting OT with Coyle-Wagner-Moore?

Carolina threw some garbage out there too. Bergeron and March played for about 30 seconds with a minute left. Cassidy was just giving his guys a rest. He responded conservatively to the weak lineup Carolina used. The moment Aho stepped on the ice, Coyle was switched for Bergeron.

Missed that. Good eyes. there.

But if Carolina put out garbage to start OT, why not go for a mismatch by putting Krejci, DeBrusk, and McAvoy out there?

*shrug* We got the win. smile

That, sir, I cannot answer. I can’t remember who played the final 30 second of regulation, but maybe it was Krejci, DeBrusk, and McAvoy.

Cassidy seems to like putting a surprising variety of guys out on OT, with short shifts. I do not fully understand his decision-making with that.

Seems connected to who he feels has played well…. on the score sheet, mostly.

Apparently to buy us time to get the good line out there

All of the B’s goals came off of turnovers.

Morning all. Dear Jake DeBrusk, I love you.

So when I started to wear 74 in my rec league, I picked it because I thought no Bruin would ever where it. I wanted something original.

Then DeBrusk (which is Spanish for “of Brusk), came along, and everyone thinks he is my favorite player.

The most annoying thing about this game was how many times NESN staff mentioned the Adams Division, old time hockey toughness and John McKenzie.

But it was nice to see the Bruins beat the Whalers for the fist time since 1997

Still, I miss the Patrick, Norris, Smythe, and Adams divisions!!! Really? Flortheast???Tradition and history are a big part of any sport, yes Gary Bettman, hockey has tradition.
Oh yeah, hockey has Pie, as well.

Hello

Why couldn’t they rock their awesome Winter Classic jerseys?

This is a very valid question.

So, Backes is a goon now?

Good to see the Bs come back from a 2-0 hole. Resilience hasn’t been their strong point this season so it’s good to prove they can dig in.

The play for that OT goal:comment image

So, Backes is a goon now?

I think a Backes is willing to do whatever it takes to contribute and stay in the line up. There aren’t many true goons left. If you’re going to make it as a goon nowadays, you better be able to play some hockey.

Someone must’ve said something to him. What’s that? three fights in five game?

I find this turn of events kinda disappointing. Granted, with Kevan Miller sidelined, there isn’t an obvious guy performing that role – but Backes isn’t an elite fighter. Do we need another Greg Campbell to ring the bell and not even win the fight?
Also, he admits that the Ferland-Johansson hit was clean, so I don’t think it even needed retaliation (but I guess the Bruins bench did, so maybe that tilt settled things down?).

Hey Pals!
The Whale, stripped of it’s blubber! Jack was probably rehearsing that all day!!I
Watched the replay…. Ayup, all of it. So why am I awake??.. not knowing the answer to that.
How does one not love Jake DeBrusk? Again, not knowing.
Brandon Carlo is becoming the guy we were hoping we got…. and he’s just going to get better!!! I’m hoping Wiley Sherman can make the big club in time to play with Chara. The Bruins could then have three giants and three……. not so giants on defense…. Forwards would be like “will they crush me, or bite my ankles?”
Okay, I need sleep! !
